A Preliminary Needs Assessment Of Postsecondary Institutions Providing Services To Students Who Are Deaf And Hard Of Hearing, Vicki L. Wolfe, William E. Woodrick

The Postsecondary Education Consortium housed at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, initiated a regional survey to determine the outreach and technical assistance needs of postsecondary institutions serving students who are deaf and hard of hearing. Results indicated that faculty and staff awareness in meeting the needs of students who are deaf and hard of hearing was the highest ranked priority among institutions. The respondents also reported the need for improvement in developmental studies programs and technical assistance in the areas of community resources^ student services procedures and site visits. This paper describes the establishment of a Consumer Advisory Council (CAC) composed of traditionally underserved (i.e, low functioning) persons who are deaf This council was established in an effort to involve lower-functioning deaf individuals in the selection, design, conduct, and dissemination of research intended to improve the vocational, social, and independent living outcomes of this population. This article, the third in a series on employment trends, focuses on occupations requiring no postsecondary training. The first article (Geyer & Schroedel, 1995) concentrated on occupations requiring a Bachelor's degree or higher, and the second article (Schroedel & Geyer, 1996) focused on occupations needing some postsecondary training, usually for one- or two-year college degrees. The next article will report on occupations requiring significant on-the-job training.

A National Screening Survey Of Community-Based Programs That Serve Persons Who Are Deaf Or Hard Of Hearing, Dayl Scherich

A project was developed to begin to identify community-based programs nationwide for persons who are deaf or hard of hearing, their goals and objectives, and the future needs of these programs. This is a report on part one of that project. Using a list building technique, 1481 programs were initially identified as possibly providing community-based services to persons who were deaf or hard of hearing. Of those programs contacted nationally, 848 community-based programs or agencies indicated that they served persons who are deaf or hard of hearing. Mediated Communication In The Postsecondary Education Of Deaf Students, Jerome D. Schein, Diane J. Simon

As increasing numbers of students with impaired hearing seek postsecondary education, the naivete of many receiving institutions about these students’ needs assumes greater importance. Students report and staff confirm that representative facilities often fail to distinguish between deaf and hard of hearing students. Such confusion leads to inappropriate accommodations, when any are made. The authors suggest antidotes for the neglect and confusion, and offer ideas for alterations in educational administration, for preparing and deploying interpreters, and for research.
