This paper addresses questions about the early career attainments and attitudes of a sample of 325 deaf and hard of hearing workers with postsecondary training and education. The overall goal is to identify the strategies that create job change and career advancement opportunities for deaf and hard of hearing workers. Specific questions addressed include: "what kinds of jobs do these alumni have and what are their earnings?" "What are their attitudes about their jobs?" A Survey Of Gallaudet Communication Arts Graduates, Rosemary D. Weller, Robert D. Harrison, Muriel Strassler

Recent Gallaudet alumni with undergraduate degrees in Communication Arts were asked about their perceptions of the major program and how it related to employment after graduation. Forty-four graduates (76 percent) responded. Ninety percent of the respondents were in the work force-in educational institutions, nonprofit organizations, private companies, and in government positions. Sixty-seven percent were satisfied with their salaries. The vast majority indicated that they were equipped to handle certain basic tasks on the job. Eighty-three percent said that their major courses had been very helpful. Over 60 percent indicated that they would choose the same major again. Implications for further …

This study investigated the expressed attitudes of deaf adults as well as hearing parents and teachers of deaf children in Israel toward career choices for deaf and hearing people by asking the participants to rate the suitability of 14 professions for deaf and hearing people. The results, in general, were consistent with those of other studies in the United States, England, Italy, South Africa and India with hearing teachers and parents of deaf children, which indicated that the hearing status of imagined advisees selectively influenced attitudes toward the suitability of certain professions. An Attributional Analysis Of Aggression Among Children Who Are Deaf, Tamera Burton Murdock, Ronald L. Lybarger

This exploratory study applied attribution theory to explain aggressive behaviors using a sample of thirty children who are deaf, ages 9-12. Students were shown four hypothetical scenarios of a child causing another child minor harm, such as bumping into him or her in the hall. The intention of the provocateur was ambiguous. Participants were instructed to pretend they were the child who had been harmed. Subsequently, they were questioned about the provocateur's intentions, their own emotional responses, and their likely behavioral response. Consistent with our predictions, many children demonstrated hostile (i.e., hostile) attributional biases. Moreover, the results support the cognition, …

Supplemental Security Income Payments Made To Young Adults Who Are Deaf And Hard Of Hearing, Jack R. Clarcq, Gerard G. Walter

This paper reports on a collaborative study between the Social Security Administration (SSA) and the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) to assess SSI benefits received by young adults who are deaf or hard of hearing in October 1995. Twenty-one percent of the subjects received an average SSI benefit of $337. The more education individuals have, the less likely they will draw SSI. Individuals who attend college and dropout receive higher SSI benefits than college graduates. A larger percentage of females than males received SSI benefits at all educational levels. This report describes survey results which highlight current practices in the provision of workplace accommodations for persons who are deaf or hard of hearing. Results show that situations considered the most difficult for persons who are deaf or hard of hearing are group or multi-speaker situations. However, the majority of accommodations requested and in use are more appropriate for one-on-one situations. Because respondents identified a limited number of accommodations in use in the workplace, it is felt that perhaps employers' and workers' lack knowledge about appropriate accommodation options. Professionals who provide services to Deaf and hard of hearing individuals may encounter situations that could be related to the person's use of alcohol and/or other drugs. Accessing an agency that can provide an appropriate chemical dependency assessment for a Deaf or hard of hearing person is difficult since there are no formalized assessment tools normed or specifically designed to use with Deaf and hard of hearing individuals. Late deafened adults are individuals who have acquired a severe or profound hearing loss in adulthood. They comprise the largest proportion of the deaf population, yet little information is available about their condition and its influence on them. The current article will discuss problems experienced by late deafened adults, psychosocial aspects associated with late hearing loss, and suggestions that might assist professionals in working with these individuals. In addition to a literature review, personal accounts of the first author will be provided.

The enactment of disability-related legislation does not, unfortunately, guarantee compliance. This is particularly problematic for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing. These individuals are most often handicapped not by their disability but rather by the unavailability of appropriate accommodations and technology. To address the impact of accommodations within the public domain two studies were conducted. The first study investigated telecommunication accessibility across government, emergency and private business numbers. Results indicated that these entities failed to answer their TTY calls almost 60% of the time. The second study assessed the availability of assistive technology for deaf and hard-of-hearing hotel …

This paper uses the model of college persistence developed by Tinto (1975y 1987) to describe three factors which are important for improving the chances that a deaf or hard of hearing person will attain a college degree. Academic integration, commitment to college, and social interaction must all be considered when designing programs to support deaf students at the college level. Findings from research conducted at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf as well as evidence from research conducted elsewhere, provided strong support for the Tinto model when applied to deaf college students.
