Intelligent Use Of The Rorschach Inkblot Technique With Deaf Persons, Theodore Siedlecki Jr.

The Rorschach Inkblot Technique can be a valuable component of a psychological assessment of deaf persons if the clinician takes into account the available research data on how normal deaf persons respond to the Rorschach. Relying solely on norms from hearing persons can lead to erroneous conclusions. This article provides guidelines for administering and interpreting the Rorschach with deaf clients. A case example demonstrates how the Rorschach can be valuable even with a client with limited language skills.

This article will report the steps and procedures implemented in the development and testing of the Diagnostic Interview Schedule for the Deaf-IV(DDIS-IV). The DDIS-IV is a standardized mental health assessment instrument developed for use with individuals who are deaf, it is self-administered in American Sign Language (ASL) on laptop computer. This research is supported by a Small Business Innovations Research Grant from the National Institute of Mental Health. The translation procedure consisted of two translation teams, advisors, and back translation. From Traditional To Innovative Assessment: The Case Of Depression, Irene W. Leigh

This article reviews various approaches to the assessment of depression in deaf people as based on current research. Studies comparing traditional paper and pencil instrumentation with American Sign Language (ASL) video tape approaches are presented. Results indicate that both approaches do work with deaf clients, depending on language proficiency in either English or ASL. Exploration of computerized technology is warranted.

This article discusses the existence of a cultural and professional obsession with pathology which has jaded mental health assessments of consumers. The importance of incorporating ecological and strengths perspectives into the assessment process is discussed. It is suggested that individual and environmental strengths need to be taken into consideration for a more positive, respectful and empowering shift in assessment paradigms to occur. Helping members of the deaf culture to engage in gainful work is an important means of their integration into the community. However, members of the deaf culture are often received simply as those with impaired hearing, and they experience difficulties in obtaining and keeping work. Cross-cultural and communication conflict is a major factor affecting their employment opportunities. How are deaf students who choose to seek employment after leaving high school prepared for the world of work? Do they have the basic, everyday readiness skills necessary to compete? Have the families, school systems, vocational rehabilitation and the community worked together effectively enough to to ensure success for the student? Legislation requires that the student have an individualized program and that collaborative efforts occur among the parties involved. But does that happen? The author proposes some practical hands-on techniques for putting the mandates of current legislation into practice to further greater success for the student entering the workforce.

For several years, Gallaudet University's School of Education and Human Services and Pre-College National Mission Programs (now Clerc Center) have co-sponsored an annual national essay contest for deaf and hard of hearing students in schools across the United States. In 1998, an unusually high number of essays -235- were received for review. During the process of serving as members of the judges’ panel for this national contest, the co-authors noted potentially important trends and patterns across the corpus of essays.

The anticipated results of genetic research and the implications for genetic engineering have the potential to reduce the incidence of conditions such as cancer, but questions have been raised about the ethics of proceeding to conditions such as blindness, deafness or color-blindness. One area that has not been addressed is the preferences of deaf individuals for the hearing status of their children. The present study investigated the preference of deaf college students for the hearing status of children they might have in the future. This paper summarizes the initial findings of studies conducted by researchers at ACT Inc. and the National Technical Institute for the Deaf concerning the performance of deaf and hard-of-hearing students on the ACT Assessment. The paper describes the ACT Assessment, and presents normative information about performance of a national sample of deaf and hard-of-hearing test takers in addition to results of performance of students entering NTID. Issues related to the effect of hearing loss, age of onset, and high school education are also discussed. Thirty eight deaf students (N = 38) participated in an exploratory study of interest differentiation addressing two research questions: (a) do factors related to vocational maturity predict differentiation at different points in time, and (b) does interest differentiation increase with age? Scores for differentiation predictors and levels were created from archival data collected when the students were 14 to 18 years old. Information from a contemporary interview when the students were 24 to 33 years old was used for later estimates of the same variables. Findings indicated that differentiation could be predicted from measures such as achievement, mental ability, and …
