This article discusses the principles of the Minnesota/Medical model as utilized in work with clients at the Minnesota Chemical Dependency Program for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Individuals. A case study issued to demonstrate the application of an effective approach to providing chemical dependency treatment to deaf and hard of hearing individuals. Prior to the case presentation, background information about unique problems with substance abuse faced by members of the deaf community, information about substance abuse, treatment models and the medical model is provided.

The emergence of Deaf culture and recent developments in identity research fueled by cultural diversity has ignited exploration of identity development in deaf people. The issue of how individuals go through the process of developing identities related to being deaf is now receiving much attention. Two major theoretical models in the literature, specifically racial identity development models and bicultural/acculturation models are presented and then discussed in terms of how they might apply to deaf people. The prevalence of childhood sexual abuse among deaf people has not been widely reported. Moreover, documented effective treatment approaches with this population is very limited to traditional forms of individual psychotherapy treatment. The purpose of this study was to explore the feasibility and challenges of implementing a mixed gender group psychotherapy program with deaf survivors of sexual abuse in childhood. Two, year long mixed-gender groups provide the case material to discuss issues related to the setting up of such a group as well as the effectiveness of treatment. Anecdotal findings from the two groups are reported.

As competition for public funding to support postsecondary education and training increases, public policy makers are demanding evidence of the benefits of their investments. This paper reports on the development of a model to assess return on investments made by the federal government (societal) in education of deaf and hard of hearing persons at the postsecondary level. It also deals with individual investments of deaf and hard of hearing students and a return or benefit on their personal investment. The Therapeutic Possibilities Of Ericksonian Hypnosis And Guided Fantasy With Deaf Clients, Gail Isenberg

This article addresses the question of whether or not hypnosis and guided fantasy are appropriate therapeutic techniques for deaf clients. This discussion is adjunct to a presentation given by the author at the 1987 American Deafness and Rehabilitation Association (ADARA) Biennial Conference. At that time the author demonstrated trance induction and guided fantasy techniques in sign language with an audience volunteer who was deaf. It is assumed that the reader has a basic understanding of Ericksonian Hypnosis.
