As younger generations become increasingly reliant on technology, higher educational institutions must continually attempt to stay with or ahead of the curve to foster 21st century teaching and learning. College and university physical activity courses (PACs) are encouraged to incorporate technology for effective pedagogical practices. No qualitative research has specifically examined the culture of PACs instructors’ attitudes and experiences with technology as a pedagogical tool. A mini-ethnographic case study explored the use of technology among seven graduate teaching assistants who shared their pedagogical experiences, teaching practices, and perceptions of technology within PACs. For individuals seeking recovery from alcohol and other drug addiction/dependence, the most common source of support is Twelve Step programs. Some people who experience problems as the result of alcohol or other drug use seek help directly from these programs. Others turn to Twelve Step programs as a source of ongoing support after having completed chemical dependency treatment. For years, deaf recovering people, like their hearing counterparts have been referred to Twelve Step meetings. There are few treatment programs for deaf children who have severe emotional or behavioral disturbances. Most programs are residential in nature. While these programs provide a much needed service, they are not available to every child that needs treatment. Further, many children do better in smaller, family oriented environments than they do in residential treatment programs. This paper presents an overview of the Independent Living Movement and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 as Amended, which mandated the creation of Centers for Independent Living (CILs). It then focuses on CDL services that are of particular benefit to persons who are deaf or hard of hearing using, the under-utilization of CILs by persons who are deaf or hard of hearing, and possible reasons for this situation are discussed.

More deaf students graduated from college in the United States in 1987 than were enrolled altogether just 25 years ago (Walter 1989). Yet this number is only about 30% of those who attempt postsecondary studies. In light of this estimated 70% withdrawal rate, we must ask whether the special needs of deaf students are being met in a manner that provides them equal opportunity to succeed at the postsecondary level (Stinson and Walter, 1992, p 57).
