In the research process, the actual searching for information often takes longer than anticipated and, especially for research with deadlines, encroaches on valuable time for reading and analysis. This collection of sources on the French Encyclopédie serves to reduce the amount of time spent on finding resources, allowing scholars to focus on individual research needs. Within this searchable annotated bibliography are select English sources that are all available online; however, many can also be found in print journals and books. Assessing An Assessment: A Case Study Of The Nsse ’Experiences With Information Literacy’ Module, Debbie Morrow

This case study explores anomalous results from an administration of the 'Experiences with Information Literacy' (IL) add-on Topical Module to the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) at Grand Valley State University (Allendale, Michigan) in 2016, and finds that wording of NSSE survey questions can significantly influence results in certain contexts. Overall, summary responses for participating students compared positively to the aggregate means for all participating Large Public institutions in the 2016 NSSE cohort, on both the core NSSE survey and the IL module. In this article, we create a capital markets-based indicator to trigger when a discussion about changing portfolio payout rates may be appropriate. Although the payout rate is often a calendar agenda item for foundations and endowments, volatility in capital markets may cause a deluge of ad hoc payout discussions that may decrease the effectiveness of investment committees.

Recent market performance provides a poor foundation for decisions related to a sustainable payout. The most sustainable portion of the investment return is the portfolio yield. We construct a metric using equity and bond market yields as a quantitative leading indicator of when …

This article seeks to help bridge this gap between theory and practice through an examination of one type of philanthropic organization — women’s grantmaking funds.

This article discusses the benefits and drawbacks of a limited-life foundation’s philanthropy practice. The strengths, including a sharpened strategic focus and sense of urgency, and the challenges, such as ensuring impact and dealing with grantee dependency, are also relevant when closing a program. Drawing on reflections from the director general of the MAVA Foundation and learnings from foundations that have recently closed, this article also discusses how to prepare for the end date of a limited-life foundation. Philanthropic organizations are experimenting with ways to support capacity building in order to scale innovations and leverage funding for greater social impact. Increasingly, philanthropies are also attending to their own organizational needs for learning in order to inform strategy, shape future work, and measure effectiveness.

This article shares the lessons of the Aligned Partners Project, a three-year study of a foundation-funded interorganizational collaboration to align the work of three technical assistance organizations to meet the needs of one school district. It identifies challenges to providing coherent assistance as well as grantmaking practices that could address them.

In 2014, the Medical College of Wisconsin’s Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin Endowment made a significant shift in focus to supporting adaptive rather than programmatic solutions to address critical health issues, and adopted a new approach that emphasized engagement with key stakeholders, recognizing the importance of contribution over attribution and requiring a long-term perspective on outcomes.

The endowment identified three new “changemaker” roles for itself, alongside new funding mechanisms and a set of conditions where positive change could be supported to influence health. This article discusses the grand strategy imperatives of 37 foreign policy experts in Washington, DC. in response to President Donald Trump's nationalist challenge to the post-WWII international order concept. Using an abductive reconstructivist methodology to analyze in-depth interviews, five grand strategy imperatives or rules for action shared by all actors were identified: safeguarding US global leadership, maintaining alliances, securing US prosperity, value orientation, and the belief in a mission. Based on the interpretation of these rules for action, four types of foreign policy experts were distinguished: nationalists, realists, pragmatic liberals, and liberals. Previous research has indicated that LGBTQIA+ clients continue to receive discriminatory care from healthcare professionals. Undergraduate nursing students (n = 24) completed a survey inquiring about their perceptions of knowledge of this vulnerable population, their preparedness to provide care, and the education they received from their BSN program. Twenty-two students’ responses, 91.67%, indicate a need for further education on the provision of care to LGBTQIA+ patients. These students demonstrated discrepancies in their perceptions and the application of their knowledge. As such, nursing programs should begin to consider providing more thorough education on this vulnerable population to prepare student nurses with …

Bystander intervention programs have consistently demonstrated beneficial effects on community norms and intervention behaviors (Kettrey, Marx, & TannerSmith, 2019). However, much of the research fails to measure opportunities to intervene relative to actual behaviors (McMahon et al., 2015), and how these behaviors relate to a personal history of sexual victimization (Woods et al., 2016). This study aimed to examine the relationship between a bystander’s victimization history, perceived barriers, and bystander intervention. Data from undergraduate students (N = 583; 79.7% female; MAge=18.92) suggested that those with such a history perceive themselves as less able to identify risky situations, but are actually …

As a collective, we aim to explore the interplay between nature and humanity through experimental photographic mediums both 2D and 3d. We hope to convey eight different interconnected perspectives on this concept. To achieve this, we incorporate photographic mediums involving elements from the natural world such as the obvious, plants, butterflies, and spider webs, to the more abstract existence of humans. We were once heavily connected with nature, relying on it to sustain life. While nature continues to be essential to human survival, we have become disconnected.

Diagnosing Short-Term Memory Scanning Using Systems Factorial Technology: A Conceptual Replication, Tylor Kistler, Monica Van Til, Lola Erfourth

Townsend and Fific (2004) published an influential short-term memory (STM) study in which they observed individual differences in serial and parallel STM scanning. The authors employed systems factorial technology —a novel methodology that provides strong diagnostic tests of cognitive structuring—and presented a new method of manipulating probe-to-memory item processing speed for memory loads (N=2). Three variables were manipulated in this experiment: number of processing elements (N=2), phonemic dissimilarity of a target to the particular memorized item (high, low), and duration between the memorized set and a target (short, long). In the original study, 10 subjects each participated in 20 sessions. …
