Objectives: Students will feel comfortable and will be successful searching for books on the library website. Students will successfully navigate call numbers, the stacks, check out, and holds.

Suitable Audience: Any classes which make significant use of/requires physical sources. This lesson has been used with Art History classes but could be adapted for others.

For decades, the Mary and Jeff Bell Library at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (TAMU-CC) has promoted library services across campus and provided information literacy instruction upon request. Despite these efforts, the library’s reach was not evenly distributed across subject disciplines or course levels, with over half of the instruction occurring at the first-year level. The TAMU-CC librarians knew that to help students become truly information literate, equitable instruction was needed across more disciplines and throughout all course levels.

Assessing An Assessment: A Case Study Of The Nsse ’Experiences With Information Literacy’ Module, Debbie Morrow

This case study explores anomalous results from an administration of the 'Experiences with Information Literacy' (IL) add-on Topical Module to the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) at Grand Valley State University (Allendale, Michigan) in 2016, and finds that wording of NSSE survey questions can significantly influence results in certain contexts. Overall, summary responses for participating students compared positively to the aggregate means for all participating Large Public institutions in the 2016 NSSE cohort, on both the core NSSE survey and the IL module. This case study examines the process of creating an interactive and engaging lesson plan for the History of Science course, HSC 201: The Scientific Revolution. History of Science students tend to be undergraduates majoring in science or medical related fields, rather than the humanities, who need to fulfill an intensive writing or general education requirement. For most, if not all of them, this session would be the first time they experienced hands-on interaction with historical resources. Accordingly, the archivist sought to create a less traditional lesson plan that would foster a sense of fun and interest in the materials.

A History Harvest is a collaborative approach to community archiving, which leverages the skills of historians, librarians, or archivists and creates experiential learning opportunities for students to collect, digitize, and share cultural heritage objects and oral histories online. In many cases, archival skills are needed to curate and preserve the digital objects created and collected during History Harvest events. In this session, presenters discuss how we can contribute our skills, knowledge, and repository resources to support our local and regional communities and diversify the historical voice preserved in our collections.

Civic Studio, an applied experimental art studio project at GVSU takes art students into a Grand Rapids neighborhood to engage with the city’s history, encourage a sense of community, understand civic responsibility, and create a context for art that reflects a sense of place within society.Each student researches a square block of the city. That’s where the librarians come in – one from GVSU, one from GRPL. Together, we help students delve into the physical, digital, and demographical resources that will inform their art.

Current practices for library outreach to international students includes an orientation at the beginning of each semester, individual consultations with librarians (initiated by the student), and University Libraries representation on a newly-formed globalization task force. The results of this study are intended to better inform the task force, and guide the formation of new materials and practices specifically tailored for the needs of international and L2 library users.
