Academic libraries are aligning themselves with their institutions’ strategic focus on student retention. But how do libraries get retention data? What do we do with it after we get it? And how do we tell our story? This presentation offers a successful, replicable model.
Does Where You Grow Up Affect Your Chances Of Being Drafted Into The Nfl?, Walker Head
Does Where You Grow Up Affect Your Chances Of Being Drafted Into The Nfl?, Walker Head
Georgia College Student Research Events
The minimum rookie salary in the National Football League (NFL) is $450,000. First round picks often sign multi-year contracts worth more than $10 million. Players from some states are much more likely to receive college scholarships and eventually be drafted into the NFL, but it is not clear if this is a causal relationship. Utilizing data from Rivals and the NFL, I attempt to determine if where a player grew up has an impact on his chances of being drafted to play professional football. I focus on the top eight states, as it relates to percentage of recruits and my …
The Impact Of A Mentoring Program On Adolescent Girls’ Self-Esteem, Natalie C. Flanders
The Impact Of A Mentoring Program On Adolescent Girls’ Self-Esteem, Natalie C. Flanders
Georgia College Student Research Events
Adolescents in the modern world often find themselves facing pressures and influences from family, friends and society. Influences such as advertisement and media are readily available through social media and internet. Girls are especially vulnerable to the pressure in maintaining an ideal body image due to stereotypical female images being portrait as beautiful and attractive. It often results in girl’s preoccupation with beauty and peers’ perceptions, along with other risky behaviors (Galeotti, 2015). Past research found support through a mentoring relationship can have profound impacts on adolescents social-emotional, cognitive, and identity development (Schwartz, Lowe, & Rhodes, 2012). Youth mentoring is …

Why Do Women Delay In Seeking Prenatal Care? A Discrete-Time Survival Analysis, Ama Agyeiwaa Abrokwah
Why Do Women Delay In Seeking Prenatal Care? A Discrete-Time Survival Analysis, Ama Agyeiwaa Abrokwah
Research and Creative Activities Poster Day
Prenatal care during early stages of pregnancy can result in early detection of some pregnancy related complications which can help reduce both maternal and infant mortality (Conway et al., 2006). The cost of service has been identified as an important determinant of the utilization of prenatal care in most developing countries. This paper evaluates how Ghana’s social health insurance program affects the timing of prenatal care utilization using survival analysis techniques. This paper hypothesizes that having insurance will result in early utilization of prenatal care.

Immigration: Rhetoric Vs. Empirical Evidence, Kolleen Rask
Immigration: Rhetoric Vs. Empirical Evidence, Kolleen Rask
HCAA Continuing Education Day
Questions about immigration not only took center stage in last year’s presidential election, but they also proved to be extremely divisive for the country. Many people have a “sense” of why immigration is good or bad for the United States, sometimes formed on the basis of a specific story that shows a good or bad outcome, sometimes based on a broader utopian or dystopian view of the world. But few have taken the time to really study the issue or even consider what questions should be asked. We’ll look at immigration into the United States – both legal and undocumented …

Exploring Victim Precipitation In Internet Crimes Against Children, Bryce L. Coulter
Exploring Victim Precipitation In Internet Crimes Against Children, Bryce L. Coulter
Student Scholar Showcase
In the past decade, reports of online child sexual exploitation have significantly increased. The purpose of this study is to explore how Internet technology has influenced the family structure resulting in the increased vulnerability of juveniles. The Family Systems theory provides rationale as to how the nurturing relationship between juvenile and parent can be reversed. The conceptualized ‘role reversal’ is characterized by parents consistently seeking nurture from their child results in the neglecting of their own child’s development. A secondary data analysis of 356 online child sexual exploitation case files from 2007 to 2014 was utilized to explore victim precipitation …

Foreign Aid Allocation And Impact In Latin America And The Caribbean (Lac): A Cross-Country Analysis Of Foreign Aid Impact On Gdp Per Capita And Life Expectancy., Ancito Etienne
Student Scholar Showcase
The research paper I will be presenting does an empirical study of the impact of foreign aid on life expectancy and GDP per capita in Latin America and the Caribbean using a panel dataset of 22 and 20 countries, respectively, dated from 1996 to 2014 to perform two distinctive regressions using the OLS method. In addition, an exploration of the impact of GDP per capita on life expectancy was conducted to determine whether there was a cause and effect phenomenon. The findings suggest that foreign aid does not seem to have a positive impact on either GDP per capita or …
Effects Of Awareness Of White Privilege And Perceived Efficacy On White Americans’ Attitudes, Mercedes B. Hamilton
Effects Of Awareness Of White Privilege And Perceived Efficacy On White Americans’ Attitudes, Mercedes B. Hamilton
Student Scholar Showcase
White privilege is something that most people do not often think about or realize exists. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of White privilege awareness (WPA) and perceived efficacy on attitudes toward African Americans. Participants will either be primed with a heightened WPA passage or a race irrelevant control passage and they will also be informed of the probability that their efforts might yield (high vs. low efficacy) before answering a series of questions. I expect to see that the participants in the heightened White privilege awareness condition will have less social distance and that this …

The Effects Of Studying Abroad On Second Language Acquisition, Laura Albert
Student Scholar Showcase
An increasing number of college students are participating in study abroad programs across the United States. The effectiveness of these study abroad trips on second language acquisition is an important topic for research. Previous studies have shown that there are differences for second language acquisition when it comes to the context of language learning (eg. classroom vs. abroad) as well as the duration of study abroad trips. The present study examined the effects of studying abroad versus formal classroom instruction on second language acquisition. In addition, the purpose of the study abroad trip was examined (e.g. learning Spanish, teaching ESL). …

Body Language in the Classroom: Effects of Gesturing
This study was designed to give some insights into how body language could interact with teaching. This study tested if active gesturing (pointing) had an effect on the amount of a story that was remembered and on how likable someone who is presenting the story was perceived as being. Male and female participants watched a female presenter read a short story projected on a screen while either pointing to key words or not pointing. Then they wrote down as much of the story as they could remember and rated the likeability of …

Presenting complex data to an audience which is unfamiliar with the intricacies of data acquisition and management is a challenge for many professionals. Education faculty and staff are no different. Staff at Bucknell University library were approached in 2015 by a faculty member from the economics department for assistance with a class on economic history. The syllabus called for the class to analyze and map the development of the 2016 presidential campaign. Through the course of this project data was gathered from multiple sources, including the American Community Survey. Tools such as ArcGIS, R, and the American FactFinder were integrated …

Colorblind Attitudes And Religious Fundamentalism As Predictors Of Racial And General Campus Climate Perceptions, Jeongbin (Jenny) Song, Cindy Miller-Perrin
Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium
The present study aimed to understand the racial differences in perception of general and racial campus climate in college students, and investigate if colorblind attitudes and religious fundamentalism help explain these differences. A sample of 2,101 undergraduate students (MAGE=19.59, SDAGE= 2.33) attending a private, Christian college in Southern California served as participants in this correlational survey research. The sample consisted of 37.9% male (n=796), 62% female (n=1303), and 0.1% other (n= 2). The following racial/ethnic groups were represented in the sample: 3.4% Black (n= 72), 18.7% Asian ( …

The Effectiveness Of Coloring Methods For Anxiety Reduction, Laura Ashlock, Cindy Miller-Perrin, Elizabeth Krumrei-Mancuso Dr.
Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium
Anxiety is one of the most prevalent mental health concerns in the United States according to the National Institute of Mental Health. A popular nonprofessional approach to managing anxiety is coloring. While mandala patterns have long been considered meditative and anxiety reducing, adult coloring books bring a new possibility to anxiety treatment. The present study compared the effects of four different coloring methods on state anxiety scores to determine whether adult coloring books are similar to other coloring approaches in impacting anxiety. Participants included 160 undergraduates (96 female, 64 male) attending a private, liberal arts university who were randomly assigned …
Marital Satisfaction: The Role Of Post-Formal Thought And Partner Blame, Kendall Jory, Cindy Miller-Perrin, Dr. Janet Trammell
Marital Satisfaction: The Role Of Post-Formal Thought And Partner Blame, Kendall Jory, Cindy Miller-Perrin, Dr. Janet Trammell
Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium
Post-formal thought, a recently identified fifth stage of developmental cognition, is a type of complex cognition initially present in emerging adulthood. It is more practical, flexible and dialectical than previous stages of cognition. Research has suggested the benefits of enhanced post-formal thought in intrapersonal functioning, as well as interpersonal functioning. In interpersonal functioning, social relationships provide an opportunity to think using post-formal cognition because two people often share different “truths” in a relationship which creates logical conflict that must be resolved to continue the relationship (Griffin et al, 2009). Using this framework, the current study aimed to further examine the …

Seeking The Shield Of Faith: The Influence Of Defensive Theology On The Development Of Religious Fundamentalism Following Mortality Salience, Brian Lammert, Cindy Miller-Perrin, Steven Rouse Dr.
Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium
This study examined religious fundamentalism in a sample of 88 undergraduate students attending a private, Christian university. After completing a measure of defensive theology, participants were randomly assigned to either a mortality salience or control condition and then assessed using a religious fundamentalism measure. A moderation analysis was performed in order to test the hypothesis that defensive theology moderates the relationship between mortality salience and religious fundamentalism. Results indicated that only defensive theology significantly predicted post-manipulation fundamentalism (p

South East Coastal Conference on Languages & Literatures (SECCLL)
The Linguistic and Sociological Dimensions of the Illusive Concept of Jamʿ
Unlike ijmāʿ, which means consensus, jamʿ refers to mere collection, gathering or grouping. In other words, if ijmāʿ is grounded in reason, indicates a choice between two opposites, and represents a reified construction, jamʿ, on the contrary, avoids reason, (con) fuses opposites, and survives on ambiguity. Jamʿ neither dialectically integrates opposites, nor post-modernly juxtaposes them as collage. The secret of jamʿ is an epistemology of truth that is never complete, and always mixed with falsehood. This epistemology is rooted in Islamic theology, where the Truth is …

In October 2016, the Diversity Council of Libraries and Educational Technologies produced book displays in Carrier and Rose Libraries that focused on "Understanding Black Lives Matter." The council wanted to provide information on this social movement within the context of national history and racial identity. A list of books that covered topic areas of criminal justice, Jim Crow, racism, and the Black experience - among others - was generated, along with two informational placards. One placard placed the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement within historical and social context, while the other placard offered a preemptive response to the question "Why …
