We will examine the role of the K-9 handler and the impact of their relationship with their k-9 and how this bond influences the effectiveness of law enforcement tasks.
The Fight For Fluoridation In Stl, Noor Yousaf
The Fight For Fluoridation In Stl, Noor Yousaf
Undergraduate Research Symposium
Fluoridation is the addition of fluoride to a source of drinking water. In St. Louis’s public water supply, the amount of fluoride remains the same since 1953 at 5ppm. Dr. Ralph Rosen and his team of dentists and researchers advocated for the fluoridation of the water because it reduced the frequency of dental caries occurring in children and adults alike, but the public had opinions on the sudden addition of chemicals to their water. This includes how the public’s health will be affected, how consumer products would change, and also how effective this addition of fluoride would be. This debate …

Leadership Education And Otherism, Jim Mohr, Kristine Hoover
Leadership Education And Otherism, Jim Mohr, Kristine Hoover
International Conference on Hate Studies
Othering is often an overlooked ethical and theoretical issue in the field of Leadership Studies. The need for greater inclusion in our organizations and in our communities is more important than ever given the structural disparities in access to health care and education, in criminal justice sentencing, and in fulfillment of leadership roles themselves. People in positions of power have a responsibility to understand othering processes and their impacts in organizations (Palfreyman, 2005). Leadership education can help to form leaders who are more aware of the importance of the quality of their relationships with the Other, grounded in values of …

Bias Against Asians, Black People, Hispanics/Latines, Jews, And Muslims On Twitter In 2020 And 2021, Gunther Jikeli
International Conference on Hate Studies
Hate speech on social media has been identified as a social problem. However, it is difficult to quantify how widespread hate speech is. We looked at conversations on Twitter about Asians, Black people, Jews, Hispanic/Latino people, and Muslims by manually annotating representative samples of tweets from 2020 and 2021 with the keywords “Asians, Blacks, Jews, Latinos, and Muslims.”
We found between 5 and 17 percent tweets were biased, depending on the keyword and year. This results in an estimated 8.3 million biased tweets during that period. However, there were even more tweets calling out bias against these minority groups, between …

The Proud Boys Raging Righteously At The U.S. Capitol On January 6th, 2021: A Hate Group In Action, Daniel Rothbart
International Conference on Hate Studies
Righteous rage constitutes an expression of political power for many hate groups operating currently in the United States, enticing them toward emotionally charged aggression against their adversaries. We offer a case study of one such group—the Proud Boys—in the context of their violent attack of the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. Rather than a momentary feeling, their righteous rage is a potent force for forming, defining, and organizing their mission to overpower their adversaries. In particular, their righteous rage is defined by (a) behavioral manifestations, (b) the emotional contagious impact of such manifestations, and (c) the centrality of raging …

Data were collected from 178 (n=178) full- time, sworn police officers in the law enforcement field. Data analysis included Pearson Correlation …

The LGBT Rights Movement has been one of the most influential social movements in recent decades. Urban warfare is as old as human history. It is becoming increasingly important in international political and military planning due to increasing global urbanization and the presence of megacities (urban areas with populations exceeding 10 million) in many global regions and being in areas of recent and potential military conflict. 2018 World Bank data notes that approximately 56% of the world's population lives in urban areas which is up from 34% in 1960. Many of these megacities, including New York City, Los Angeles, Sao Paulo, Mumbai, Shanghai, and Manila are adjacent to oceanic waters and vulnerable to trade and supply …

Oppression Or Occupation: Conflicting Views On The Nature Of Sex Work In France And Under International Law, Carver Wolfe

Although there is some debate over the exact number of victims of sex trafficking, it is agreed upon that it is an issue that affect primarily women and girls around the world. This paper will examine modern day slavery and the unresolved, century-old debate surrounding sex trafficking and sex work. While abolitionists advocate for total eradication of all sex work, whether it is consensual or not, libertarians support the right to voluntary sex work while condemning the coercion and exploitation that surrounds all forms of trafficking. I will use an analysis of international conventions and will begin a comparative analysis …

Conflict In Kashmir, Matthew Atkison '22, Sarah Oquendo '22, Manaal Shamsi '22
Student Leadership Exchange (SLX)
The topic we are discussing in our presentation is the controversy of Kashmir. Kashmir is a region that has recently been in a territorial dispute between India and Pakistan due to it being between the two nations and it having access to an abundant supply of resources. Nothing has been done to solve the situation other than Pakistan and India pointing the blame to each other. Many have …

What Went Wrong With Economics?: Milton Friedman, Alexander Meiklejon, And The Reorientation Of Freedom, Aria Mia Loberti
Senior Honors Projects
Economics went wrong in the midst of the Cold War, specifically the time of the terror of communism in the 1950s. It went wrong in Chicago economics in particular—exacerbated by a reorientation in how to understand and conceptualize freedom. Milton Friedman’s Capitalism and Freedom trumpets the virtues of economic freedom, or the freedom of choice within the competitive market. It represents the Chicago neoliberal position. In contrast, the luminary Alexander Meiklejohn advocates a radically different conception of freedom, and his ideas echo the voices pre-1950 Chicago economics. Meiklejohn promotes political freedom over economic freedom: championing absolute protection for free speech, …
