‘Neogeographies’ are Web 2.0 applications using geographic information. This session will show a few examples of this type of web-based tool but will focus mostly on Google Earth. Cathy Moulder has done some research specifically on Google Earth and its application to student assignments in higher education. This particular neogeography offers considerable potential for incorporation into student assignments in many disciplines.

Scholarly Communication And Collection Development Librarians: Getting The Conversation Started, Karen S. Fischer
Karen S Fischer
In many academic libraries, knowledge of the issues surrounding scholarly communication is considered a skill set required by every librarian who has contact with faculty and students. Conveying the complexities of author rights, alternative publishing models, open access, and the economics of publishing can seem daunting, so how do we to begin the conversation?
Learning about these complex issues takes time, but there are ways to facilitate the process of empowering librarians with the information they need to be knowledgeable enough to have conversations with their constituents. This presentation is tailored to librarians who have not yet gotten started on …

The prior literature on the sociology of disasters has primarily examined community responses to large-scale episodic disasters, such as in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans in 2005. However, the study of persistent and chronic disasters in developing countries represents an area that has largely been ignored in prior studies. Flint and Luloff’s (2005) Inter-actional theory as a framework, our research examines the influence of perceived risk, vulnerability and community characteristics on human-wildlife conflict among 275 subsistence-based farmers living in four small villages in Southeastern Kenya. These farmers rely on a horticultural and pastoral economy for survival and …
A New Way To Look At Culture And Its Influence On Advertising Around The World, Pamela K. Morris
A New Way To Look At Culture And Its Influence On Advertising Around The World, Pamela K. Morris
Pamela K. Morris
Research investigates culture and its influencing role. With anthropological theories, a model is created to show how cultural dimensions influence media and advertising content. Encompassing 108 countries, a factor analysis of 71 country characteristics finds four dimensions: Holistic, Nationalistic, Feminine and Masculine. A content analysis of magazine advertisements provides data of images that are tested for correlations with cultural dimensions. The study updates cultural literature with new social phenomena data, like cell phone and Internet users.
