Alcoholism Research Project Of Mexican Americans In Scottsbluff, Nebraska, Jesse Cervantes, David R. Dimartino
Alcoholism Research Project Of Mexican Americans In Scottsbluff, Nebraska, Jesse Cervantes, David R. Dimartino
Publications
The principle focus of this report is to assess the availability and utilization of established alcoholism services for Mexican Americans in the Scottsbluff area. Though important, the concern here is not with the absolute supply of services (for example, the number of quarter way and halfway houses in Scottsbluff County), nor is it with spatial distribution of services (for example, the location of the detoxification center in Scottsbluff County) . Rather, this analysis focuses on the utilization of existing services and the extent of the need for services by Mexican Americans in the Scottsbluff area.
Alcohol Prevention In Five Secondary Schools, Genevieve Burch
Alcohol Prevention In Five Secondary Schools, Genevieve Burch
Publications
In the early 1970's as the enormous pressure of drug related problems was abating, the attention of mental health professionals, school personnel, and the criminal justice system was refocused on the problems that come with alcohol. A new phenomenon seemed to be following the drug "scene," the increased alcohol usage among teen-agers and even children. The message was clear: an effort had to be made to prevent alcohol abuse before problem drinking became more widespread.

Public Transit And Student Choice : A Survey With Portland State University Students, Sheku Gibril Kamara
Public Transit And Student Choice : A Survey With Portland State University Students, Sheku Gibril Kamara
Dissertations and Theses
Research in urban transportation has been of many facets. Some have emphasized modes and routes while others have attempted to isolate and look at small segments of the transportation market with specific demands. Such segments include workers, recreation riders, and to a less extent, students. In the "journey-to-work" studies, a major finding has been that as income of workers increases, the distance between residence and work-place also increases.
This thesis starts with a series of hypotheses generated as a result of the findings of other studies reviewed in the literature. In testing the hypotheses, variables that are likely to influence …

Hanover Street: An Experiment To Train Women In Welding And Carpentry, Peggy Antrobus, Barbara Rogers
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
The Hanover Street Project, formally known as the United Women’s Woodworking and Welding Project, is an experiment in training women for jobs usually held only by men. Begun in 1976, this was the first such program of the Jamaica Women's Bureau, established by the government during International Women's Year to ensure that women participate fully in Jamaica’s development. The project demonstrated that low-income women can learn non-traditional skills and can work together to improve their lives. Through trial and error, the project is providing the Women's Bureau with a wealth of information about teaching technical skills, working with other government …

Jacksonville, An Energy Efficient City?, Jacksonville Community Council, Inc.
Jacksonville Community Council, Inc.
In the fall of 1979 the Energy Study Committee received its charge: "Moving Toward an Energy Efficient Jacksonville- how should Jacksonville approach this problem?" This report examines the energy situation to ascertain whether crisis conditions really exist. In the broadest terms, this means a close look at two things: supplies and consumption. The report is limited to the examination of the availability and consumption of oil in both the nation and Jacksonville in the short term (the next 5 years), and in the long term (the next 20 years), for the fueling of the transportation system and for the generation …

An Analysis Of Israeli Domestic Political Characteristics And Their Affect On The Middle East Conflict, David Hight
An Analysis Of Israeli Domestic Political Characteristics And Their Affect On The Middle East Conflict, David Hight
Masters Theses
The conflict in the Middle East is a turbulent situation of great significance to the entire world. This study examines the internal political scene of Israel and its affect on the overall Middle East situation. It focuses on ideology, structure, and policy within Israel as components of that scene.
The ideology of Zionism provided the justification for the creation of Israel and continues to form the basis for governmental decision making there. An analysis of the principles of Zionism and of the statements, writings, and actions of Zionist leaders showed that the ideology could reasonably be interpreted as racist and …
Toward The Democratization Of The Social Policy Process, L. K. Northwood
Toward The Democratization Of The Social Policy Process, L. K. Northwood
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The purpose of this paper is to reflect on the nature of social policies and the public policymaking process. It is demonstrated that public social policies tend to accrue an aura or ideology of benevolence that is only partially warranted, and that may be quite misleading to policy analysts and citizenry. The major thrust of the paper is to consider the social policy process as a strategy for public decision-making. As such, properly organized, it can provide an alternative and complementary strategy to electoral politics and protest movements. To be effective as a strategy, three major barriers must be overcome: …
Will Carter's Welfare Reform Plan Reform Welfare?: Evidence From Empirical Research, Mary Bryna Sanger
Will Carter's Welfare Reform Plan Reform Welfare?: Evidence From Empirical Research, Mary Bryna Sanger
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
This paper introduces the central dimensions which have emerged in the current welfare reform debate. They include adaquacy, work incentives, family stability and cost. The last legislative session introduced a new group of "welfare reform" proposals, each attempting to address these critiques of the current welfare system. Considering four major bills including Carter's Comprehensive Program for Better Jobs and Income on the basis of recent research findings, results in a tentative preference for Carter's plan. It addresses the major reform dimensions better than the others and would result in modest improvements. Nevertheless, true reform is unlikely to be achieved by …
Political De-Moralization Of The Poor: Organizing Lower-Class Families Of The Mentally Retarded, Leonard Fontana
Political De-Moralization Of The Poor: Organizing Lower-Class Families Of The Mentally Retarded, Leonard Fontana
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
This paper employs an analytic framework based on organizational incentives to explain the failure of recent welfare reform efforts. The data consists of observations, interviews, and routine inhouse reports collected on a federally funded program, Project STAR. The project was developed with the aim of mobilizing lower-class and minority families of the mentally retarded in support of reform of mental retardation services in five cities in the U.S. A service-inducement strategy was pursued by the reform organization to overcome the difficulties of enticing lower-class families of the retarded to participate in organizational activities. This strategy appears to have had several …
Social Welfare Agencies And Social Reform Movements: The Case Of The Single Parent Family, Michael J. Smith, Beth Moses
Social Welfare Agencies And Social Reform Movements: The Case Of The Single Parent Family, Michael J. Smith, Beth Moses
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
To a greater extent than before, social welfare agencies are emphasizing social change over direct services. A social reform movement is a mechanism by which societal and institutional change may be accomplished. The relationship between social welfare organizations and social movements has not been clearly defined. The sociological theories of Smelser, Turner, Killian and others on collective behavior and social movements provide a useful knowledge base for welfare organizations and professionals espousing social reform goals. The single parent family population is discussed as a group with the potential to generate into a social reform movement.
