A Descriptive Analysis Of Nebraska's Unicameral Legislature, Harry W. Wade Jan 1969

A Descriptive Analysis Of Nebraska's Unicameral Legislature, Harry W. Wade

Nebraskiana Publications: Resources and Materials on the 37th State

What is the Nebraska "Unicameral" experience in handling problems relating to organization, procedure, leadership, and lobbying? Has the Nebraska system attracted different kinds of people to legislative service? This study was undertaken for the purpose of determining, on the basis of an investigation of the only one-house state legislative system in the nation, how Nebraska unicameralism functions in present-day circumstances and if the Nebraska experience has produced evidence of alternative ways of dealing with contemporary legislative problems which would tend to bear out the expectations of the supporters of the single-house legislature. Because the Nebraska unicameral plan employs an important …

George Romney In 1968, From Front-Runner To Drop-Out, An Analysis Of Cause, Richard M. Eyre Jan 1969

George Romney In 1968, From Front-Runner To Drop-Out, An Analysis Of Cause, Richard M. Eyre

Theses and Dissertations

The meteoric political decline of George Romney is unparalleled in political history and in the history of presidential campaigning. In the space of one year, the man evolved from the overwhelming presidential favorite of Republicans, Democrats, and Independents alike to a presidential drop out, criticized severely and even mocked by press and public alike.

There are many opinions as to why this phenomenon occurred. The press has opinions, the public has opinions, and the people closest to George Romney have opinions.

A step by step analysis of Romney's campaign casts light on these opinions and completely discredits some while validating …

The Defeat Of A Minister, Norman Miller, Bismark Mwansasu Jan 1969

The Defeat Of A Minister, Norman Miller, Bismark Mwansasu

Dartmouth Scholarship

The election defeat of a national Cabinet Minister in Rungwe West Constituency marked one of the most dramatic events of the 1965 Tanzania elections. Jeremiah S. Kasambala, the Minister for Industries. Mineral Resources and Power and a well-established political figure, was defeated at the polls by an unknown clerk from the local District Council. At first glance the outcome might scem due to a voting pattern which followed tribal lines: two small ethnic groups simply combined to defeat a member of the Nyakyusa people who predominate in the District. On closer analysis, however, far more complex factors emerge as contributing …

Chronic Illness And The Richmond Nursing Home, Robert L. Gordon

Master's Theses

The problem of aging and chronic illness has become more acute with the 19601s and more in the public attention than ever before. Projected figures for 1970 estimate 9.1% of the population will be in the aged group. In 1965 one out of five under 17 was affected by chronic disabilities. Both the private and public sectors of the economy are involved in seeking solutions.

This thesis deals with the adm inist rative area of the public sector. The thesis attempts to state the problem, point out knowledge and recommendations in the hospital administration field and show the Richmond Nursing …

Utilization Of County Boundaries In Drawing Legislative Districts, Robert A. Barrett Jan 1969

Utilization Of County Boundaries In Drawing Legislative Districts, Robert A. Barrett

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Analysis of the traditional and contemporary arguments on county lines as a basis of drawing state legislative districts appears to indicate that in a state such as Minnesota, with large number of counties and extreme variations between them, county boundary lines should not be accorded primary consideration in drawing legislative districts if compliance is sought with the "one - man, one - vote" constitutional principle. Minnesota government officials faced with reapportioning the state's legislative districts need to determine the role that county boundary lines should fulfill in their decision. This paper was prepared originally al the request of the Minnesota …

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

in this issue. . .

TAKING UP our pen on the afternoon of election day, we are more than commonly aware of the suspense, the troubled uncertainty, on the threshold of what we feel in our marrow will prove to be a new age. Of course we could wait until tomorrow and put one minor suspense behind us, that is, the identity of our new president; but, partisan as we were in casting our ballot, and stoutly as we cheered one man in preference to another, we are nevertheless of the opinion that the new president will have little more …

The Twenty-Fifth Amendment To The Constitution Of The United States, Francis Joseph Romano Jan 1969

The Twenty-Fifth Amendment To The Constitution Of The United States, Francis Joseph Romano

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This paper presents a study of the Twenty·-Fifth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America. The Amendment was first proposed to Congress as Senate and House Joint Resolutions in February 1965. It became law in February 1967, when Nevada secured the distinction of being the 38th state to ratify it, thus fulfilling the required agreement by three·-fourths of the states.

The Amendment has not yet been tested. It is the first comprehensive legislative attempt to solve three related problems that have plagued the executive branch of our government since the earliest days of the Union.

The Rise And Decline Of A Small Midwestern Town, Mitchell, Iowa, Jack D. Frisbie Jan 1969

The Rise And Decline Of A Small Midwestern Town, Mitchell, Iowa, Jack D. Frisbie

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

After the frontier had reached the Midwest, settlement proceeded at a rapid pace. When the Black Hawk Purchase opened Iowa to settlers in 1832, farmers and merchants soon replaced the trappers, miners, and fur traders of an earlier era. By the outbreak of the Civil War the state was one-third settled. By 1890 all of the counties in the state had been settled and developed. Such rapid occupation of these lands encouraged dreams of great cities and the creation of country villages in numbers which were excessive for the survival of many. Numerous communities developed only to become ghost towns …

The Office Of Attorney General In New Mexico, James Michael Mcadams Dec 1968

The Office Of Attorney General In New Mexico, James Michael Mcadams

Political Science ETDs

The office of Attorney General in New Mexico is a very powerful office but also a very restricted one. This study examines the various roles available to the Attorney general and the degree to which they are compatible or in conflict. The interplay of these roles is viewed as the basis for the influence exercised by the office and also the difficulties which it encounters. The history of the office offers some insight into its present operation. The territorial Period from 1848 50 1912 was characterized by active competition for the office and by numerous attempts to make it a …
