WRAPPING UP a decade of academic publication is no difficult chore, especially since generous, gracious, and for the most part patient contributors have been prodigal in showering us with material-articles, poems, and reviews-for the past six or seven years. And our esteemed colleague, absent on sabbatical leave this past semester, had thoughtfully selected practically the whole of this Summer Literary Number prior to her departure for far-flung and deep-delving research on her Emily Dickinson. The result is a solid collection of entertaining, incisive, and insightful reading. The subjects of our six articles range from Herman …
Citizen Participation: A Concept Applied To The Albuquerque Model Cities Program, John Charles Epler
Citizen Participation: A Concept Applied To The Albuquerque Model Cities Program, John Charles Epler
Political Science ETDs
The federal government, in partnership with local government, has recently become committed to programs directed at improving the quality of life in urban slums. Several of these programs have required that those residents who are directly affected by the program participate meaningfully in its decision-making mechanism. The purpose of this study is to describe the pattern of citizen and resident participation in one such program, the Albuquerque Model Cities Program. The temporal limits of the study are confined to the Albuquerque Program's first year of operation (March, 1968, to March, 1969). In order to develop data which could form the …
The Impact Of The Immigration Act Of 1924 On American-Japanese Relations, Mazika E. Anthony
The Impact Of The Immigration Act Of 1924 On American-Japanese Relations, Mazika E. Anthony
History Theses & Dissertations
The abrogation of the Gentlemen's Agreement. and the manner in which it was achieved deeply hurt Japanese pride, which had reached new proportions in the 20th century. The American action was interpreted as a deliberate affront to a friendly nation, and upset the traditional amity which had characterized American-Japanese relations since the opening of Japan by 'Commodore Mathew C. Perry. It is the aim of this paper to show the extent of anti-Japanese agitation in the United States, the impact of the Immigration Act of 1924 on American-Japanese relations, and its relationship to the conflict which developed between the two …

Public Opinion Of The Supreme Court: Albuquerque, 1967, George Wallace Dean
Political Science ETDs
This thesis is an analysis of a survey of public opinion about the United States Supreme Court. The survey itself, in which the author did not participate, was conducted by students in the Political Science Department during the 1967 spring semester. Approximately sixty questions were asked of the survey respondents and all replies were coded and placed on data processing cards. The Chi-square test for statistical significance was applied to this data. Multi-variate analyses were made of several of the variables using Pearson's Coefficient of Contingency, C.
Electoral Trends And Partisan Patterns, Lea County, New Mexico, Stuart W. Spillar
Electoral Trends And Partisan Patterns, Lea County, New Mexico, Stuart W. Spillar
Political Science ETDs
Political parties and the voting public to whom they must appeal have long been scrutinized in hopes of finding clues regarding artisan performances and political behavior of the electorate. Often, such examinations reveal factors which become predictable in pattern fashion. This paper is an attempt to attribute to a particular segment of New Mexico politics a pattern of political activity. Namely, by it economics, the similarities of place of origin of its population, and its almost perfect record of dedication to one particular political party, Lea County, New Mexico shows no convincing signs of immediately becoming a vibrant two-party system …
Age, Cognitive Construction, And Attitudes On The Vietnam War, Robert Schuyler Vrooman
Age, Cognitive Construction, And Attitudes On The Vietnam War, Robert Schuyler Vrooman
Political Science ETDs
It was the purpose of this study to investigate the influence of age on foreign policy opinions. In order to do this a hypothesis developed by Kurt W. Back and Kenneth F. Gergen was tested against public opinion on the Vietnam War. Back and Gergen hypothesized that a person's preferences for solutions to local, national, and international problems are related to age. Specifically, the young and aged persons tend to prefer those solutions which would terminate such problems as rapidly as possible. This they attributed to cognitive restriction of the spatial and temporal orientations. Three methods were used to investigate …

The Structure And Function Of Local Party Organization, Theresa Aragon Shepro
Political Science ETDs
The primary purpose of this thesis was to analyze those variables which effect the way in which a political party organizes at the local level. The research was structured in such a way as to ascertain what the structure and function of local party organization was perceived to be by local party officials and candidates for public office. Separate, open-end interview schedules were constructed for all precinct and county, Democratic and Republican party officials as well as for candidates for county and legislative office from Bernalillo County, New Mexico. Completed interviews based on the 1966 election campaign and election with …
