Demand And Supply In White Collar Unionism, 1950 To 1968, Joseph Lee Jan 1971

Demand And Supply In White Collar Unionism, 1950 To 1968, Joseph Lee

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

ABSTRACT - Data of union representation elections held by the National Labor Relations Board were used in this study to investigate demand by white collar workers for union services, and union efforts to organize white collar workers between 1950 and 1969. Findings indicate that slow growth of white collar unionism prior to the 50's was due to a lack of demand for union services among white collar workers and a lack of interest among unions to organize white collar workers, but in the late 60's it was mainly because of the lack of .union efforts to organize the white collar …

Michels' Law Of Oligarchy And Minnesota Republican Nucleons And Cadres, Thomas L. Pahl Jan 1971

Michels' Law Of Oligarchy And Minnesota Republican Nucleons And Cadres, Thomas L. Pahl

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

ABSTRACT - In an attempt to evaluate Michels' assertions about an "iron law of oligarchy,'' the top two levels of leadership in a state political party have been compared. An attempt to flnd significant differences which would support Michels' elitist theories has been made by comparing demographic factors, work approval and disapproval, political factors, and career aspirations of nucleons and cadres. No great support for the theories has been found, and some contrary evidence has been unearthed. In a further attempt to test Michels' theory, the leadership is divided along career aspirations into careerists and terminals; the support for an …

Nationalism And Class Struggle : Essays In Zionism And Socialism, Ber Borochov Jan 1971

Nationalism And Class Struggle : Essays In Zionism And Socialism, Ber Borochov

Books

"Borochov foresaw the struggle of oppressed peoples as a necessary and lasting factor in the formation of a new social order.

The economy of the Jewish nation is that of a nation in exile. Jews are centered around secondary occupations; they are excluded from the primary level of production: agriculture, mining, heavy industry. They work more often as merchants, in services, and as workers in the secondary industries (food, clothes, etc.) They desire to penetrate the higher classes. As individuals they may succeed in doing so but as a nation they cannot succeed. The assimilation of the Jews is not …

History Of The South African Mission Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, 1853-1970, Farrell Ray Monson Jan 1971

History Of The South African Mission Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, 1853-1970, Farrell Ray Monson

Theses and Dissertations

The history of the South African Mission of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (1853-1970) describes the progress of the Church in South Africa from its inception until the present time. Missionary proselyting activities in the land are traced, and the major historical developments of the mission are discussed.

In 1853 three missionaries began Mormon proselyting activities in the Cape Province and within six months they had baptized forty-five persons, established two branches, and organized the first conference of the Church.

Despite mob violence and opposition from the clergy, civil authorities, and the press, the Church continued to …

John Dewey's Ideas About The Great Depression, Edward J. Bordeau Jan 1971

John Dewey's Ideas About The Great Depression, Edward J. Bordeau

Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

Some criticisms that have been directed against John Dewey's political theory reveal a general misunderstanding of his intent. Dewey was quite active in writing, lecturing, and propagandizing during the Depression years. Our primary concern in this article is the role he played in the efforts of the League for Independent Political Action to sponsor a third party from 1928 until the collapse of this project in 1936. Concurrent with this movement is Dewey's work with the People's Lobby in advocating social welfare programs to meet the crises generated by the Depression.

Contemporary Student Radicals And Their Belief Systems, Lloyd M. Tataryn Jan 1971

Contemporary Student Radicals And Their Belief Systems, Lloyd M. Tataryn

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Student activism has become so familiar a feature of Western politics that the silent generation of students in the 1950’s and early 1960’s almost seems an aberrant phenomenon. Because radical students confront social authorities demanding reforms, it is not surprising that many in positions of authority eye student radicals with certain misgivings. An apprehensive attitude therefore exists on both sides. This study of student unrest analyses the relationship between technological innovation and social cleavage in order to trace the development of the differing attitudes and value sets over a period of time. The value dichotomy can be most appropriately illustrated …

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

in this issue. . .

THE MIDWEST QUARTERLY regretfully announces the resignation from its editorial board of Professor ROBERT BLUNK, whose increasing responsibilities as a teacher in the Art Department of Kansas State College, a consultant on numerous art projects, a member of the Kansas Cultural Arts Commission, and a practicing artist have left him, as he feels, with too little time for editorial duties which are growing increasingly heavy themselves. His successor has not yet been discovered.

THIS is our Minorities Issue, as anticipated in the "looking forward" pages of our October 1970 number, and very properly half our …

The Effect Of British Intrusion On The Customary Law Of Bantu Africa, C. Jeremy Curtoys Jan 1971

The Effect Of British Intrusion On The Customary Law Of Bantu Africa, C. Jeremy Curtoys

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Western man has great pride in his political institutions, which with some justification he holds to be the first to recognize the rule of law as superior to the rule of men. Thus it was with great confidence in his laws and rectitude of his ways that the first Europeans occupied Africa. The impact of this invasion upon the indigenous populations of Africa was tremendous. Every facet of Africa life, its social, political, economic and legal systems were affected.

A study of Bantu customary law has to depend largely on secondary material, because until recent times, the law of Bantu …

Mediocrity And Roll-Calls: The Identification Of Marginal Congressmen And Some Study Of Their Voting Behavior, Richard K. Wray Jan 1971

Mediocrity And Roll-Calls: The Identification Of Marginal Congressmen And Some Study Of Their Voting Behavior, Richard K. Wray

Honors Projects

In any field there are some people who excel and some who do poorly; the United States House of Representatives should not be expected to be an exception. A purpose of this paper is to analyze those in the House who perform relatively poorly; their actions and voting. However, it should be noted that a determination of who is mediocre and what effects mediocrity has on voting cannot be expected to explain how or if this factor can be dealt with or eliminated.
