A Comparative Analysis Of The Student Movements In The United States And Japan, 1964-1970, Charlotte Jackson Lerch Jan 1973

A Comparative Analysis Of The Student Movements In The United States And Japan, 1964-1970, Charlotte Jackson Lerch

Master's Theses

The basic question seems to be this: are there, indeed, any experiences similar enough to say that the basic causes of student unrest in the United States and Japan are the same? I would hypothesize that there are. It is my thesis that student unrest and the causes of student unrest in highly advanced countries are similar. While students may be dissatisfied with the same structures within their societies. Therefore, I intend to demonstrate in this paper, my thesis that student unrest and the cause of student unrest in modern countries are similar.

Utopian Communalism: A Comparison Of 19th And 20th Century Phenomena In The United States, Truman David Wood Jan 1973

Utopian Communalism: A Comparison Of 19th And 20th Century Phenomena In The United States, Truman David Wood

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The utopian communal phenomenon has been present in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The longevity of various religious and secular utopian communal experiments is examined in terms of four organizational factors and the twentieth century communes are considered in terms of four ideals. The main stream of American society has assimilated nothing from these utopian communal experiments.

An Analysis Of The Effects Of Background Variables On Attitudes And Policy At The Bonneville Power Administration, Philip George Millam Jan 1973

An Analysis Of The Effects Of Background Variables On Attitudes And Policy At The Bonneville Power Administration, Philip George Millam

Dissertations and Theses

The question is asked whether or not background, education, and training of middle and upper level bureaucratic personnel affects policy outcomes. The Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) serves as the agency examined. A written questionnaire sent to a random sample of BPA executives sought data on background variables with the intent of making comparisons. Most BPA executives are found to share very similar education and training backgrounds – namely, engineering studies at Northwest state universities. Also, attitudes measured are found to be more similar than different on most issues for the agency as a whole. This phenomenon is explained in terms …

The Origins And Development Of Marxist Theory On Economic Backwardness, Andrew Joseph Shookhoff Jan 1973

The Origins And Development Of Marxist Theory On Economic Backwardness, Andrew Joseph Shookhoff

All Master's Theses

This paper traces the development of Marxist theory on the problems of economic backwardness. Beginning with Marx's own writing, the paper examines the major theoretical and political developments in the history of Marxism, which contributed to the reorientation of Marxist thinking from the problems of the developed world to the problems of the underdeveloped world. An attempt is made to show both the relevance of the Marxist tradition to analysis of underdevelopment and the problems which the heirs to this tradition must deal with.

Frontier Consuls: Americans In British Columbia And The Yukon, 1880-1906, Clyde William Tucker Jan 1973

Frontier Consuls: Americans In British Columbia And The Yukon, 1880-1906, Clyde William Tucker

All Master's Theses

Many of the important questions whose resolution shaped twentieth century Canadian-American relations developed out of real or imagined conflicts of interest in the Pacific region during the latter part of the ninteenth century. The United States had no diplomatic representation in Canada, but consuls in British Columbia and the Yukon kept the Department of State well informed of developments which affected American interests. With emphasis on the period between 1880 and 1906, this paper describes the roles played by the consuls in the definition of problems that arose from disputes over boundaries, resource use, smuggling and extradition.

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

in this issue. . .

WITHOUT A CRYSTAL BALL and with no faith in our special sensitivity to coming events (writing as we do in late October of the preceding year), we have no confident picture of the world to which this issue of January 1973 will be going out. We do not know who will be President, though we have our lively suspicions, nor whether the cruellest, bloodiest of wars will have come to some sort of conclusion, though we have our desperate hopes. But one thing we can be sure of, and that is, it is time—it is …

Rhetoric And Reality In American Political Pluralism : Jackson-Calhoun Controversy In Perspective, Margaret Spencer Wise Jan 1973

Rhetoric And Reality In American Political Pluralism : Jackson-Calhoun Controversy In Perspective, Margaret Spencer Wise

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The essential problem of politics are ancient general, and persistent. A particular political system, such as that of the United States, can be interpreted as a way of coping with recurring problems. Some of the ways a political system deals with problems may be unique, some commonplace. Because it meets its problems in a particular time and place with a special body of past experiences to go on, each political system is unique; so too the American system is unique. But because some problems have recurred ever since civilized men have tried to live together, every political system has had …

The Political Implications Of The Canada-United States Automobile Agreement, William G. Park Jan 1973

The Political Implications Of The Canada-United States Automobile Agreement, William G. Park

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Since the Canada-United States Automobile Agreement came into effect in 1965 there has been relatively little scholarly comment on it. This is surprising in view of the attention which has been given to other bilateral treaties between the two countries and in view of the effect that the treaty has had on the operation of the automobile industry in both countries. In fact, to the best of the author’s knowledge, this is the first study which has examined the Automobile Agreement from a political point of view.

The Agreement came into effect at the time of political re-evaluation in Canada. …

Political Prospects For An Ocean Regime, Laurence Arden Hill Jan 1973

Political Prospects For An Ocean Regime, Laurence Arden Hill

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The subject area of this thesis is the proposed international sea regime. The regime in this context refers to the proposed international organization to control the resources of the sea-bed beyond the limits of national jurisdiction. Regime in the above context has a specific meaning and should not be confused with the more general meaning of a regime of the sea. In the more general sense a regime of the sea would encompass the entire law of the sea. Such a broad scope is not intended, therefore no treatment of fishing rights, limitation of nuclear arms, extensive oil deposits at …

A Political Profile Of Utah Women, Ann Wassermann Jan 1973

A Political Profile Of Utah Women, Ann Wassermann

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

This paper is a product of the desire to take advantage of the enormous amount of valuable data available in the files of the Bureau of Government and Opinion Research at Utah State University. The manpower and financial demands of doing the actual polling and getting the totals quickly to the public or private client make a detailed analysis of the conglomerate of studies a near impossibility.

It was my purpose to undertake a segment of just this type of research and integration of data. The increasing frequency with which women as a minority and voting group have been referred …
