Quest For Political Legitimacy; Utah 1896-1933, Kirk V. Shepherd
Quest For Political Legitimacy; Utah 1896-1933, Kirk V. Shepherd
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
FROM 1896 until the early 1930's, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS or Mormon), executed what was in my opinion a quest to regain and establish it's own political legitimacy as an institution. Since early in the Church's comparatively brief history, the very mention of their religion in the majority of modern societies carries negative connotations. I hypothesize that the quest to eliminate or at least "back seat" this stereo type was the primary motivating factor behind many of the decisions made by leaders of the Church during that time period. I will focus on the national …
The Soviet Union And The Gatt: An Impossible Combination?, Gregory L. Waddoups
The Soviet Union And The Gatt: An Impossible Combination?, Gregory L. Waddoups
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
In considering the relationship between the General Agreement on Trade and Tariffs and any given state, one must examine not only the economic reasons for acceptance and participation, but also the political. This is especially true when dealing with the Soviet Union. In researching this topic, I have found that economics and politics are deeply interwoven into the fabric of international dealings with the Soviets on any level and at any given time.
Soviet participation in the GATT goes back to the very beginnings of the Bretton Woods institutions and of the International Trade Organization. While this participation runs contrary …

The Origins Of The Department Of Defense Recommendation To Cross The 38th Parallel During The Korean War, Wayne A. Kirkbride
The Origins Of The Department Of Defense Recommendation To Cross The 38th Parallel During The Korean War, Wayne A. Kirkbride
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
This thesis considers the reasons the Department of Defense (DOD) developed its recommendation concerning the U.S. involvement in the Korean War. The United states initially committed its forces to restore the status quo antebellum. However, by 31 July 1950, the DOD recommended that a free, unified, and representative Korea should be the policy object of the war and that the occupation of all of Korea and the defeat of the North Korean armed forces north and south of the 38th Parallel should be the military objectives.
Several factors contributed to the recommendation of a change in policy and strategy. A …
Inter-American Indemnity: Internal Security And The Mutual Security Program For Latin America (1951-1961), Robert George Baker
Inter-American Indemnity: Internal Security And The Mutual Security Program For Latin America (1951-1961), Robert George Baker
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
This thesis examines the purpose of U.S. military aid in the American Republics from 1951 through 1961 and proves that concern for internal security became dominant during that period. At first military aid supported hemispheric defense against communist aggression, which Washington orchestrated through mutual defense agreements, but by 1953 maintenance of internal security emerged as the major aim of aid to several Central American nations. In 1956 the National Security Council determined that internal security was a vital goal of the military aid program for Latin America. The ascendance of internal security concerns is described and analyzed in three parts: …
At The Crossroads: U.S. National Interests In The Gulf And The Middle East, Khalid I. Dekhayel
At The Crossroads: U.S. National Interests In The Gulf And The Middle East, Khalid I. Dekhayel
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
The United States not only has profound interests in the Middle East but, as the dominant international power, has an obligation to help· achieve peace and stability in that part of the world. As such, it should strive to play the leading role of championing a just and lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians because the conflict in reality is not an Arab-Israeli one but is Israeli-Palestinian at its core. There are, of course, many barriers in the way of reaching that goal. Chief among them are the extremists on both sides. But the United States is in a unique …

Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988) An Attempt To Explore The Role Of Khomeiniism In The War, Masoud Bonyanian
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
This thesis investigates the impact of Khomeiniism on the Shi'ites of Iraq. Specifically it seeks to determine whether the rise of Khomeiniism in Iran inspired Iraq's Shi'ite majority to rise against the Ba'athist leaders of Iraq with the object of establishing an Islamic Republic. The paper focuses on the political activities of the Iraqi Shi'ites from Ayatollah Khomeini's rise to power in Iran in February 1979 to the beginning of hostilities between Iraq and Iran in September 1980. The evidence indicates mounting anti-Ba'athist political activity by the Shi'ites which included daily rioting, attempted assassinations, and a rise in the number …

The Politics Of Educational Vouchers, Donna Hedge
The Politics Of Educational Vouchers, Donna Hedge
Theses & Honors Papers
The circumstances which prompted this proposal reflect the desire to show that my present pursuit of a double major in elementary education and political science are of relative value to one another. This issue obviously reflects educational matters, but it also contends with those of a political nature such as government control, regulation, budgeting, and public policy. This paper engages in a comprehensive normative study which examines the origin and progression of the idea of an educational voucher system from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. Special emphasis focuses upon the theoretical arguments which support educational vouchers. Evidence obtained through …

Apathy And The Birth Of Democracy: The Polish Struggle, David S. Mason
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
Apathy, from the Greek words meaning "w ithout feeling," is at once a term denoting an individual's impassivity or indifference and a form of collective political behavior. Our concern is the la tter form of apathy in Poland from the Solidarity period of 1980-81 to the present.

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought
Chiding modern historians for a hidebound rigidity that blinds them to the truths that lie in historical fiction and poetry, JAMES A. STEVENSON argues that Edmund Spenser's history of Elizabethan times revealed less than his magnificent, but outwardly fictional Faerie Queen. Holder of a doctorate in history and a recently completed master's degree in English literature, Stevenson has published articles on history, film, and literature in a variety of academic journals, including an essay on Lincoln's affinity for Macbeth in The Midwest Quarterly. He is currently Assistant Professor of History at East Georgia College.

Modernization And Development: An Empirical Study Of South Korea And Brazil, Douglas J. Becker '91

The united states has both the moral responsibility and a practical interest in economic development in the Third World. Morally, the U.S. and its Western allies have responsibility for two reasons. First and foremost, we have postulated that our presence in the Third World would benefit the entire world. Economic interdependence is thought to be one of the true assets of free trade and economic assistance. Unfortunately, the optimism within the General Agreement of Trade and Tariffs (GATT) and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD, or World Bank) have little empirical evidence to support their claims. The U.S. …

Touched By Fire: Readings In Time Of War, Shaun O'Connell
New England Journal of Public Policy
In "Touched by Fire: Readings in Times of War," Shaun O'Connell draws us into the eerie atmosphere that pulled this country into itself in the late fall and early winter, when thoughts of war provoked hard questions and when, for a time, doubt became the stuff of eloquence.
The works discussed in this article include: Pledging Allegiance: The Last Campaign of the Cold War, by Sidney Blumenthal; Millie's Book, as dictated to Barbara Bush; An American Life, by Ronald Reagan; The Civil War: An Illustrated History, by Geoffrey C. Ward with Ric Burns and Ken Burns; …

The religious underpinnings of American political and legal institutions have been duly noted by legal scholars, historians, judges, politicians, and clergymen alike. Church polities provided models not only for colonial civil governments but also for the present constitutional system.
