Constructing Community: How Shared Historic Preservation Interests Build Better Places And Spaces, Sara Decaro
Constructing Community: How Shared Historic Preservation Interests Build Better Places And Spaces, Sara Decaro
Faculty Submissions
Generating interest in local history and historic buildings can be a challenge at times for archivists and historic preservationists. When the two groups collaborate, however, it can lead to greater interest and investment in preservation across the board. This session will explore how partnerships between historic preservationists and archivists can increase community relationships, foster greater interest in local histories, and further work to preserve a community’s documentary and architectural heritage. Tricia Gilson will discuss a multi-partner effort to document a nineteenth-century historic downtown and some of the women-owned and Jewish-owned businesses once found there. Sara DeCaro will describe her experience …
Environmental Stewardship: Managing The Process Of Changing Archives Spaces, Bethany Fiechter
Environmental Stewardship: Managing The Process Of Changing Archives Spaces, Bethany Fiechter
Library Faculty publications
A building renovation in many ways is comparable to that of sowing and harvesting a garden. It requires a favorable environment, great planning, patience, and fortitude. Both the process and outcome can be wildly unpredictable, so archivists and any other parties involved must be prepared to respond with flexibility, adaptability, and, at times, compromise.
When we think about renovations, how do we as practitioners and leaders advocate for the specialized requirements that suit the needs of our evolving collections? How do we balance asking for what we want versus what is minimally required? What sacrifices may be needed to satisfy …

Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
What happens when you combine archivists and non-archivists with good intentions, unprocessed collections, institutional push to seek grants, competing pressures and deadlines? At the University of Nebraska at Omaha Archives and Special Collections, this familiar scenario occurred during a period focused on prioritizing Latinx collections including personal papers, Office of Latino and Latin American Studies Records, and oral histories. During our presentation, we will share how archivists attempted to wrangle multiple funding streams to meet processing, outreach, and digitization goals while internal and external forces took a toll. These included stakeholder expectations, the complexities of student employment, campus events, and …

Information Science Faculty Scholarship
Scholarly communication has long been a central topic in the field of information science. However, philosophical, and even perhaps some legal reflections, including the moral and ethical considerations of the health of information ecosystems, are fairly recent developments. In fact, recent topics are propelled by various contextual factors including economic, disciplinary, societal norms, and cultures. This article explores literature discussing the plight of scholars in low- and middle-income countries that struggle to engage in scholarly communications in their fields. This topic has been explored for years, however, has often been addressed in disciplines outside of information science and knowledge management. This …

Sowing Seeds For Success: Equitable Grading In The Information Literacy Classroom, Alicia G. Vaandering
Public Services Faculty Presentations
What impact does your grading and assessment have on student success and retention? Research has shown that traditional grading can have a negative impact on student learning by placing students who come to the classroom with less knowledge or experience with class content at a disadvantage. This session will introduce the practice of ungrading, an umbrella term that encompasses a wide range of equitable grading strategies and practices like specifications and contract grading. Together, attendees will question how library and LIS educators can rethink their grading on a spectrum that ranges from redesigning a single assignment to overhauling an entire …
