Novel Approach To Traveling-Wave-Based Fault Location In Nonhomogeneous Transmission Lines, John Parker Burrell

Master's Theses

Accurate fault location is a critical aspect of power system protection, ensuring grid reliability and minimizing downtime. Traditional traveling-wave-based fault location methods face limitations when applied to nonhomogeneous transmission lines due to the reliance on precise segment velocities and propagation time data. This thesis addresses these challenges by proposing a novel algorithm that leverages historical fault data to estimate segment velocities and refine these estimates as more faults occur. The algorithm was rigorously tested using the digital model of an 11-segment, 65.694 km real overhead transmission line and validated using both simulations and hardware tests using commercially available time-domain protective …

Numerical Studies Of Semiclassical Light Storage Using The Coherent Atomic Transfer Function, Zachary T. Johnson Mar 2025

Numerical Studies Of Semiclassical Light Storage Using The Coherent Atomic Transfer Function, Zachary T. Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

Quantum communication through photons relies on photonic storage to preserve quantum states. However, when photons interact with matter, quantum information becomes distorted. A recently developed semi-classical analytical model predicts output light pulses from an electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) system. Using the predictions, the model known as the Coherent Atomic Transfer (CAT) Function, is capable of predicting the stored pulse or reconstructing the original pulse. Using numerical convolution and deconvolution with the CAT function as an analog of the point spread function of Fourier optics can provide insights on the effects of EIT storage on the retrieved pulse. Blind deconvolution is …

Optimal Manipulation Motion Action Planner Enabled By Physics Informed Neural Networks, Jonathon E. Slightam, Logan E. Beaver

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

Autonomous robotic manipulation in unstructured environments faces many challenges and is hindered by capabilities that bridge the gap between perception and acting on the world. Action plans that are centric to object motion rather than end-of-arm tooling behavior may aid this. This paper presents an autonomous action planner for a feedback linearizeable system comprised of three base motions that can be leveraged on their own or in combination to give custom motion plans. The optimization routine for the three different types of motion are presented, which are integrated into physics informed neural networks. A component of this is the autonomy …

Determining The Transient Electric Field And The Effect Of Pulse Repetition Frequency On The Field In A Repetitive 10-Ns Pulsed Discharge In A Quiescent Ch₄-Air Mixture, Chunqi Jiang Jan 2025

Determining The Transient Electric Field And The Effect Of Pulse Repetition Frequency On The Field In A Repetitive 10-Ns Pulsed Discharge In A Quiescent Ch₄-Air Mixture, Chunqi Jiang

Bioelectrics Publications

The goal of this research is to understand the underlying physics enabled by nanosecond pulsed power in a discharge initiation and the following physicochemical processes that favor lean-fuel plasma ignition for combustion. The hypothesis of this project is that pulsed power waveforms such as the pulse repetition frequency (PRF), voltage amplitude, and dielectric surface alter the reduced electric field during the initiation of the discharge, resulting in different plasma properties, which will vary the physicochemical processes for efficient and selective radical productions. This is especially important for lean-burn combustion and reducing emission.

Preparation Of Mocvd-Grown Photocathodes Containing A Strained Gaas/Gaasp Superlattice, G. Blume, A. Masters, J. Grames, M. Stutzman, M. Grau, S. Marsillac

Physics Faculty Publications

In this work, we investigate heat cleaning options for high-polarization GaAs/GaAsP strained-superlattice (SSL) photocathodes with a distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) that were grown using metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). This was done using a microMott polarimeter at Jefferson Lab to optimize both quantum efficiency and polarization. The fabrication process for MOCVD-grown photocathodes does not allow for the inclusion of an arsenic cap, contrary to what is done when fabricating photocathodes using molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE). Without proper preparation, the performance of MOCVD-grown photocathodes can be limited due to surface contamination. Here, we varied both duration and temperature of the heat cleaning …

Data-Driven Gradient Optimization For Field Emission Management In A Superconducting Radio-Frequency Linac, S. Goldenberg, K. Ahammed, A. Carpenter, J. Li, R. Suleiman, C. Tennant

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Field emission can cause significant problems in superconducting radio-frequency linear accelerators (linacs). When cavity gradients are pushed higher, radiation levels within the linacs may rise exponentially, causing degradation of many nearby systems. This research aims to utilize machine learning with uncertainty quantification to predict radiation levels at multiple locations throughout the linacs and ultimately optimize cavity gradients to reduce field emission-induced radiation while maintaining the total linac energy gain necessary for the experimental physics program. The optimized solutions show over 40% reductions for both neutron and gamma radiation from the standard operational settings.

Polarized Photocathode R&D At Bnl And Spin Consideration For The Eic Preinjector, Jyoti Biswas, Erdong Wang, Omer Rahman, John Skaritka, Adam Masters, Sylvain Marsillac, Tai-De Li

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Superlattice GaAs photocathodes are vital for producing polarized electron beams for the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The electron pre-injector at the EIC requires a 7 nC bunch with at least 85% spin polarization from a GaAs-based superlattice cathode. The doping density of the very surface layer of the cathode needs to be optimized to extract a high bunch charge beam from the high-voltage DC gun. The polarization axis of the emitted beam is longitudinal, and it will be rotated to transverse direction using two Wien filters, each rotating the spin by 45 degrees. In this paper, we …

Time-Marching Quantum Algorithm For Simulation Of Nonlinear Lorenz Dynamics, Efstratios Koukoutsis, George Vahala, Min Soe, Kyriakos Hizanidis, Linda Vahala, Abhay K. Ram

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Simulating nonlinear classical dynamics on a quantum computer is an inherently challenging task due to the linear operator formulation of quantum mechanics. In this work, we provide a systematic approach to alleviate this difficulty by developing an explicit quantum algorithm that implements the time evolution of a second-order time-discretized version of the Lorenz model. The Lorenz model is a celebrated system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations that has been extensively studied in the contexts of climate science, fluid dynamics, and chaos theory. Our algorithm possesses a recursive structure and requires only a linear number of copies of the initial state …

Optimal Control And Structurally-Informed Gradient Optimization Of A Custom 4-Dof Rigid-Body, Brock Marcinczyk, Logan E. Beaver Jan 2025

Optimal Control And Structurally-Informed Gradient Optimization Of A Custom 4-Dof Rigid-Body, Brock Marcinczyk, Logan E. Beaver

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

This work develops a control-centric framework for a custom 4-DOF rigid-body manipulator by coupling a reduced-order Pontryagin’s Maximum Principle (PMP) controller with a physics-informed Gradient Descent stage. The reduced PMP model provides a closed-form optimal control law for the joint accelerations, while the Gradient Descent module determines the corresponding time horizons by minimizing a cost functional built directly from the full Rigid-Body Dynamics. Structural-mechanics reaction analysis is used only to initialize feasible joint velocities—most critically the azimuthal component—ensuring that the optimizer begins in a physically admissible region. The resulting kinematic trajectories and dynamically consistent time horizons are then supplied to …

Vaim-Cff: A Variational Autoencoder Inverse Mapper Solution To Compton Form Factor Extraction From Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering, Manal Almaeen, Tareq Alghamdi, Brandon Kriesten, Douglas Adams, Yaohang Li, Huey-Wen Lin, Simonetta Liuti

Computer Science Faculty Publications

We develop a new methodology for extracting Compton form factors (CFFs) from deeply virtual exclusive reactions such as the unpolarized DVCS cross section using a specialized inverse problem solver, a variational autoencoder inverse mapper (VAIM). The VAIM-CFF framework not only allows us access to a fitted solution set possibly containing multiple solutions in the extraction of all 8 CFFs from a single cross section measurement, but also accesses the lost information contained in the forward mapping from CFFs to cross section. We investigate various assumptions and their effects on the predicted CFFs such as cross section organization, number of extracted …

The Effect Of Electrode Geometry On Excited Species Production In Atmospheric Pressure Air-Hydrogen Streamer Discharge, Shirshak Kumar Dhali, Stuart Reyes Jan 2025

The Effect Of Electrode Geometry On Excited Species Production In Atmospheric Pressure Air-Hydrogen Streamer Discharge, Shirshak Kumar Dhali, Stuart Reyes

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

When a gas is overvolted at or near atmospheric pressure, it results in a streamer discharge formation. Electrode geometries exert significant impact on the electrical breakdown of gases by altering the spatial profile of the electric field. In many applications the efficient generation of radicals is critical and is determined by the characteristics of the streamer discharge. We examine the effect of electrode geometry on the streamer characteristics and the production of radicals. This is performed for three different electrode geometries: plane–plane, pin–plane, and pin–pin. A two-dimensional rotationally symmetric fluid model is used for the streamer discharge simulation in the …

Modeling Strain And Quantum Confinement In Gaas/GaXIn1-XP Superlattices For Spin-Polarized Electron Sources, A. Kachwala, G. Blume, S. Marsillac, J. Grames, M. Grau

Physics Faculty Publications

In this study, we systematically design and simulate a series of GaAs-based superlattice configurations aimed at enhancing heavy-hole–light-hole band splitting while simultaneously optimizing band alignment to reduce the conduction band barrier, thereby facilitating efficient electron transport. These combined effects are crucial for achieving high electron spin polarization and high quantum efficiency, the two key performance metrics of next-generation spin-polarized electron sources. We investigated three types of superlattice architectures: (1) compressively strained GaAs wells on GaInP barriers, yielding a maximum band splitting of 140 meV, (2) lattice-matched GaAs/GaInP structures, resulting in the maximum band splitting of 75 meV, and (3) tensile …

Sensitivity Analysis Of The 197 Mhz Prototype Crab Cavity For Eic, Subashini De Silva, Jean R. Delayen, B. Xiao, E. Drachuk, I. H. Senevirathne, A. Castilla, N. Huque, Z. Li

Physics Faculty Publications

The Electron-Ion Collider at BNL requires several crabbing systems that will be operating at 197 MHz and 394 MHz to compensate for the loss of luminosity due to the large crossing angle of the colliding beams. Two 197 MHz crab cavity cryomodules containing two cavities each will be installed in the Hadron Storage Ring (HSR) at the IP6 interaction region. Due to its large size compared to previously developed crabbing cavities, the 197 MHz crabbing cavity system was identified as one of the critical rf systems in the EIC. Therefore, a cavity has been designed including the ancillaries, and is …

Niobium films are of interest in applications in various superconducting devices, such as superconducting radiofrequency cavities for particle accelerators and superconducting qubits for quantum computing. In this study, we address the persistent medium-field Q-slope issue in Nb film cavities, which, despite their high-quality factor at low RF fields, exhibit a significant Q-slope at medium RF fields compared to bulk Nb cavities. Traditional heat treatments, effective in reducing surface resistance and mitigating the Q-slope in bulk Nb cavities, are challenging for Nb-coated copper cavities. To overcome this challenge, we employed DC bias high-power impulse magnetron sputtering to deposit …

Streamer Discharge Modeling For Plasma-Assisted Combustion, Stuart Reyes, Shirshak Kumar Dhali Jan 2025

Streamer Discharge Modeling For Plasma-Assisted Combustion, Stuart Reyes, Shirshak Kumar Dhali

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Some of the popular and successful atmospheric pressure fuel/air plasma-assisted combustion methods use repetitive ns pulsed discharges and dielectric-barrier discharges. The transient phase in such discharges is dominated by transport under strong space charge from ionization fronts, which is best characterized by the streamer model. The role of the nonthermal plasma in such discharges is to produce radicals, which accelerates the chemical conversion reaction leading to temperature rise and ignition. Therefore, the characterization of the streamer and its energy partitioning is essential to develop a predictive model. We examine the important characteristics of streamers that influence combustion and develop some …

Detecting Anomalous Srf Cavity Behavior With Unsupervised Learning, Hal Ferguson, Jiang Li, Adam Carpenter, Chris Tennant, Dillon Thomas, Dennis Turner

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

We present an unsupervised learning framework for detecting anomalous superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavity behavior at the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF), emphasizing its initial performance and effectiveness. Key to the system’s success was the development of data acquisition systems (DAQs) that capture fast-sampled, information-rich signals, essential for detecting transient effects. The approach involves creating daily cavity-specific models using principal component analysis to handle variations in rf signal behavior and mitigate performance degradation from data drift. This unsupervised method eliminates the need for expensive labeling by continuously updating models with recent data. Deployed and operational for 3 months before a …

Effect Of Activation Temperature On Quantum Efficiency And Lifetime Of Nea Truncated Nanocone Array Gaas Photocathode, Md. Aziz Arroyo Rahman, Md Abdullah Mamun, Shukui Zhang, Hani E. Elsayed-Ali

Physics Faculty Publications

This study investigates the quantum efficiency (QE) and operational lifetime of a negative electron affinity GaAs truncated nanocone array (TNCA) photocathode benchmarked against a conventional flat GaAs photocathode under varying activation temperatures. The TNCA structure demonstrated a QE of up to 13.6% at 590 nm with room temperature (RT) activation—approximately 1.5 times higher than its flat counterpart. This enhancement is due to Mie resonance effects within the nanostructure, as confirmed by finite-difference time-domain simulations. Moreover, the TNCA photocathode exhibits significantly extended charge lifetime, with enhancement factors of ∼6.1 and ∼19.8 under RT and 50 °C activations, respectively. These gains are …

Clusteredlog: Optimizing Log Structures For Efficient Data Recovery And Integrity Management In Database Systems, Mariha Siddika Ahmad, Brajendra Panda

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

In modern database systems, efficient log management is crucial for ensuring data integrity and facilitating swift recovery from potential data corruption or system failures. Traditional log structures, which store operations sequentially as they occur, often lead to significant delays in accessing and recovering specific data objects due to their scattered nature across the log. ClusteredLog addresses the limitations of traditional logging methods by implementing a novel logical organization of log entries. Instead of simply storing operations sequentially, it groups related operations for each data item into clusters. As a result, ClusteredLog enables faster identification and recovery of damaged data items …

Superconducting resonator couplers will likely become an essential component in modular semiconductor quantum dot (QD) spin qubit processors, as they help alleviate crosstalk and wiring issues as the number of qubits increases. Here, we focus on a three-qubit system composed of two modules: a two-electron triple QD resonator coupled to a single-electron double QD. Using a combination of analytical techniques and numerical results, we derive an effective Hamiltonian that describes the three-qubit logical subspace and show that it accurately captures the dynamics of the system. We examine the performance of short-range and long-range entangling gates, revealing the effect of a …

Optical Investigation Of A Low-Pressure Plasma In A Superconducting Radio-Frequency Cavity, Zachary A. Caudell

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The state-of-the-art cryomodules for particle accelerators use superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavities. It is known that accumulation of hydrocarbon impurities reduces the cavity surface work function, decreasing cryomodule performance metrics such as field emission, thermal stability, and accelerating gradients. An in-situ method of plasma processing has recently been developed to clean the cavities and restore cryomodule performance [1]. This study is to understand the properties of the low-pressure plasmas generated in a C100 SRF cavity and ultimately to improve the performance of plasma surface cleaning using optical emission spectroscopy. Using a 500 mm focal length Czerny-Turner monochromator coupled with a photomultiplier …

We design, build, and validate an optical system for generating light beams with complex spatial coherence properties in real time. Beams of this type self-focus and are resistant to turbulence degradation, making them potentially useful in applications such as optical communications. We begin with a general theoretical analysis of our proposed design. Our approach starts by generating a Schell-model (uniformly correlated or shift-invariant) source by spatially filtering incoherent light. We then pass this light through an optical coordinate transformer, which converts the Schell-model source into a nonuniformly correlated field. After the general analysis, we discuss system engineering, including trade-offs among …

Breaking The Causality Limit For Broadband Acoustic Absorption Using A Noncausal Active Absorber, Kangkang Wang, Sipei Zhao, Chen Shen, Haishan Zou, Jing Lu, Andrea Alu

Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research

The principle of causality imposes a constraint between the thickness and bandwidth of absorbers. This trade-off applies to any linear, time-invariant, passive system, limiting the development of broadband-absorbing materials that demand a thin profile for sound, light, and radio waves. Here, we demonstrate a strategy to overcome this constraint in acoustics using a noncausal active absorber whose response is controlled over time. A theoretical framework is established, which sets a relation among minimum thickness, bandwidth, and a priori information about the incident signal, representing a relaxed physical bound for noncausal absorbers. We design an absorber based on this principle and …
