Solutions Of Dynamic Equations On Time Scales With Jumps, Kayode Daniel Olumoyin Jan 2013

Solutions Of Dynamic Equations On Time Scales With Jumps, Kayode Daniel Olumoyin

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

To obtain the solution of first order dynamic equations on time scales with jumps, a good question to ask is, how many initial conditions will be needed? We shall show that you only need the initial condition that gives you either the initial position or the initial velocity. The solution at each left scattered point in the time scale can be obtained analytically. With this approach we shall write the general form of the solution of a first order dynamic equations on time scales with jumps. To do this we shall use the Hilger derivative, anti-derivatives, the Hilger Complex plane, …

G-Strands, Darryl Holm, Rossen Ivanov, James Percival Nov 2012

G-Strands, Darryl Holm, Rossen Ivanov, James Percival

Articles

A G-strand is a map g(t,s): RxR --> G for a Lie group G that follows from Hamilton's principle for a certain class of G-invariant Lagrangians. The SO(3)-strand is the G-strand version of the rigid body equation and it may be regarded physically as a continuous spin chain. Here, SO(3)K-strand dynamics for ellipsoidal rotations is derived as an Euler-Poincar'e system for a certain class of variations and recast as a Lie-Poisson system for coadjoint flow with the same Hamiltonian structure as for a perfect complex fluid. For a special Hamiltonian, the SO(3) …

The Octonions And The Exceptional Lie Algebra G2, Ian M. Anderson Sep 2012

The Octonions And The Exceptional Lie Algebra G2, Ian M. Anderson

Research Vignettes

The octonions O are an 8-dimensional non-commutative, non-associative normed real algebra. The set of all derivations of O form a real Lie algebra. It is remarkable fact, first proved by E. Cartan in 1908, that the the derivation algebra of O is the compact form of the exceptional Lie algebra G2. In this worksheet we shall verify this result of Cartan and also show that the derivation algebra of the split octonions is the split real form of G2.

Special Dual Like Numbers And Lattices, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy Jan 2012

Special Dual Like Numbers And Lattices, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this book the authors introduce a new type of dual numbers called special dual like numbers. These numbers are constructed using idempotents in the place of nilpotents of order two as new element. That is x = a + bg is a special dual like number where a and b are reals and g is a new element such that g2 =g. The collection of special dual like numbers forms a ring. Further lattices are the rich structures which contributes to special dual like numbers. These special dual like numbers x = a + bg; when a and b …

Euler Equations On A Semi-Direct Product Of The Diffeomorphisms Group By Itself, Joachim Escher, Rossen Ivanov, Boris Kolev Sep 2011

Euler Equations On A Semi-Direct Product Of The Diffeomorphisms Group By Itself, Joachim Escher, Rossen Ivanov, Boris Kolev

Articles

The geodesic equations of a class of right invariant metrics on the semi-direct product of two Diff(S) groups are studied. The equations are explicitly described, they have the form of a system of coupled equations of Camassa-Holm type and possess singular (peakon) solutions. Their integrability is further investigated, however no compatible bi-Hamiltonian structures on the corresponding dual Lie algebra are found.

A Mathematician Weighs In On The Evolution Debate, Kris H. Green Jul 2011

A Mathematician Weighs In On The Evolution Debate, Kris H. Green

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

There are a variety of reasons underlying the lack of public acceptance for the theory of evolution in the United States. An overlooked cause is related to problems with the mathematics curriculum in the K-12 setting. In this essay, we examine this relationship and propose changes to the mathematics curriculum that could improve mathematical thinking while also providing a basis for understanding theories, like evolution, that are poorly understood.

A Group-Permutation Algorithm To Solve The Generalized Sudoku, Florentin Smarandache Jun 2011

A Group-Permutation Algorithm To Solve The Generalized Sudoku, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Sudoku can be generalized to squares whose dimensions are n^2 × n^2 , where n ≥ 2, using various symbols (numbers, letters, mathematical symbols, etc.), written just one time on each row and on each column; and the large square is divided into n 2 small squares with the side n × n and each will contain all n 2 symbols written only once. In this paper we present an elementary solution for the generalized sudoku based on a group-permutation algorithm.

Deterministic And Stochastic Bellman's Optimality Principles On Isolated Time Domains And Their Applications In Finance, Nezihe Turhan May 2011

Deterministic And Stochastic Bellman's Optimality Principles On Isolated Time Domains And Their Applications In Finance, Nezihe Turhan

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The concept of dynamic programming was originally used in late 1949, mostly during the 1950s, by Richard Bellman to describe decision making problems. By 1952, he refined this to the modern meaning, referring specifically to nesting smaller decision problems inside larger decisions. Also, the Bellman equation, one of the basic concepts in dynamic programming, is named after him. Dynamic programming has become an important argument which was used in various fields; such as, economics, finance, bioinformatics, aerospace, information theory, etc. Since Richard Bellman's invention of dynamic programming, economists and mathematicians have formulated and solved a huge variety of sequential decision …

Finding The Beat In Music: Using Adaptive Oscillators, Kate M. Burgers May 2011

Finding The Beat In Music: Using Adaptive Oscillators, Kate M. Burgers

HMC Senior Theses

The task of finding the beat in music is simple for most people, but surprisingly difficult to replicate in a robot. Progress in this problem has been made using various preprocessing techniques (Hitz 2008; Tomic and Janata 2008). However, a real-time method is not yet available. Methods using a class of oscillators called relay relaxation oscillators are promising. In particular, systems of forced Hopf oscillators (Large 2000; Righetti et al. 2006) have been used with relative success. This work describes current methods of beat tracking and develops a new method that incorporates the best ideas from each existing method and …

Noise, Delays, And Resonance In A Neural Network, Austin Quan May 2011

Noise, Delays, And Resonance In A Neural Network, Austin Quan

HMC Senior Theses

A stochastic-delay differential equation (SDDE) model of a small neural network with recurrent inhibition is presented and analyzed. The model exhibits unexpected transient behavior: oscillations that occur at the boundary of the basins of attraction when the system is bistable. These are known as delay-induced transitory oscillations (DITOs). This behavior is analyzed in the context of stochastic resonance, an unintuitive, though widely researched phenomenon in physical bistable systems where noise can play in constructive role in strengthening an input signal. A method for modeling the dynamics using a probabilistic three-state model is proposed, and supported with numerical evidence. The potential …

A Stochastic Model For Wind Turbine Power Quality Using A Levy Index Analysis Of Wind Velocity Data, Jonathan Blackledge, Eugene Coyle, Derek Kearney May 2011

A Stochastic Model For Wind Turbine Power Quality Using A Levy Index Analysis Of Wind Velocity Data, Jonathan Blackledge, Eugene Coyle, Derek Kearney

Conference papers

The power quality of a wind turbine is determined by many factors but time-dependent variation in the wind velocity are arguably the most important. After a brief review of the statistics of typical wind speed data, a non- Gaussian model for the wind velocity is introduced that is based on a Levy distribution. It is shown how this distribution can be used to derive a stochastic fractional diusion equation for the wind velocity as a function of time whose solution is characterised by the Levy index. A Levy index numerical analysis is then performed on wind velocity data for both …

On The (Non)-Integrability Of Kdv Hierarchy With Self-Consistent Sources, Vladimir Gerdjikov, Georgi Grahovski, Rossen Ivanov Jan 2011

On The (Non)-Integrability Of Kdv Hierarchy With Self-Consistent Sources, Vladimir Gerdjikov, Georgi Grahovski, Rossen Ivanov

Articles

Nonholonomic deformations of integrable equations of the KdV hierarchy are studied by using the expansions over the so-called “squared solutions” (squared eigenfunctions). Such deformations are equivalent to a perturbed model with external (self-consistent) sources. In this regard, the KdV6 equation is viewed as a special perturbation of KdV. Applying expansions over the symplectic basis of squared eigenfunctions, the integrability properties of the KdV6 equation are analysed. This allows for a formulation of conditions on the perturbation terms that preserve its integrability. The perturbation corrections to the scattering data and to the corresponding action-angle (canonical) variables are studied. The analysis shows …

Neutrosophic Interval Bialgebraic Structures, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy Jan 2011

Neutrosophic Interval Bialgebraic Structures, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this book the authors for the first time introduce the notion of neutrosophic intervals and study the algebraic structures using them. Concepts like groups and fields using neutrosophic intervals are not possible. Pure neutrosophic intervals and mixed neutrosophic intervals are introduced and by the very structure of the interval one can understand the category to which it belongs. We in this book introduce the notion of pure (mixed) neutrosophic interval bisemigroups or neutrosophic biinterval semigroups. We derive results pertaining to them. The new notion of quasi bisubsemigroups and ideals are introduced. Smarandache interval neutrosophic bisemigroups are also introduced and …

Differential Geometry Of Moving Surfaces And Its Relation To Solitons, Andrei Ludu Jan 2011

Differential Geometry Of Moving Surfaces And Its Relation To Solitons, Andrei Ludu

Publications

In this article we present an introduction in the geometrical theory of motion of curves and surfaces in R 3 , and its relations with the nonlinear integrable systems. The working frame is the Cartan’s theory of moving frames together with Cartan connection. The formalism for the motion of curves is constructed in the Serret-Frenet frames as elements of the bundle of adapted frames. The motion of surfaces is investigated in the Gauss-Weingarten frame. We present the relations between types of motions and nonlinear equations and their soliton solutions.

Inverse Scattering Transform For The Degasperis–Procesi Equation, Adrian Constantin, Rossen Ivanov, Jonatan Lenells Aug 2010

Inverse Scattering Transform For The Degasperis–Procesi Equation, Adrian Constantin, Rossen Ivanov, Jonatan Lenells

Articles

We develop the Inverse Scattering Transform (IST) method for the Degasperis- Procesi equation. The spectral problem is an sl(3) Zakharov-Shabat problem with constant boundary conditions and finite reduction group. The basic aspects of the IST such as the construction of fundamental analytic solutions, the formulation of a Riemann-Hilbert problem, and the implementation of the dressing method are presented.

Reconstructability Analysis Of Elementary Cellular Automata, Martin Zwick, Hui Shi Mar 2010

Reconstructability Analysis Of Elementary Cellular Automata, Martin Zwick, Hui Shi

Systems Science Friday Noon Seminar Series

Reconstructability analysis is a method to determine whether a multivariate relation, defined set- or information-theoretically, is decomposable with or without loss (reduction in constraint) into lower ordinality relations. Set-theoretic reconstructability analysis (SRA) is used to characterize the mappings of elementary cellular automata. The degree of lossless decomposition possible for each mapping is more effective than the λ parameter (Walker & Ashby, Langton) as a predictor of chaotic dynamics.

Complete SRA yields not only the simplest lossless structure but also a vector of losses of all decomposed structures, indexed by parameter, τ. This vector subsumes λ, Wuensche’s Z parameter, and Walker …

Verification Of Kam Theory On Earth Orbiting Satellites, Christian L. Bisher Mar 2010

Verification Of Kam Theory On Earth Orbiting Satellites, Christian L. Bisher

Theses and Dissertations

This paper uses KAM torus theory and Simplified General Perturbations 4 (SGP4) orbit prediction techniques compiled by Dr. William Wiesel and compares it to Analytical Graphics ® Incorporated (AGI) Satellite Toolkit ® (STK) orbit data. The goal of this paper is to verify KAM torus theory can be used to describe and propagate an Earth satellite orbit with similar accuracy to existing general perturbation techniques. Using SGP4 code including only truncated geopotential effects, KAM torus generating code, and other utilities were used to describe a particular satellite orbit as a torus and then propagate the satellite using traditional and KAM …

Validation Of A Novel Approach To Solving Multibody Systems Using Hamilton's Weak Principle, Ashton D. Hainge Mar 2010

Validation Of A Novel Approach To Solving Multibody Systems Using Hamilton's Weak Principle, Ashton D. Hainge

Theses and Dissertations

A novel approach for formulating and solving for the dynamic response of multibody systems has been developed using Hamilton’s Law of Varying Action as its unifying principle. In order to assure that the associated computer program is sufficiently robust when applied across a wide range of dynamic systems, the program must be verified and validated. The purpose of the research was to perform the verification and validation of the program. Results from the program were compared with closed-form and numerical solutions of simple systems, such as a simple pendulum and a rotating pendulum. The accuracy of the program for complex …

Uniform Stabilization Of N-Dimensional Vibrating Equation Modeling ‘Standard Linear Model’ Of Viscoelasticity, Ganesh C. Gorain Dec 2009

Uniform Stabilization Of N-Dimensional Vibrating Equation Modeling ‘Standard Linear Model’ Of Viscoelasticity, Ganesh C. Gorain

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we deal with the elastic vibrations of flexible structures modeled by the ‘standard linear model’ of viscoelasticity in n-dimensional space. We study the uniform exponential stabilization of such kind of vibrations after incorporating separately very small amount of passive viscous damping and internal material damping of Kelvin-Viogt type in the model. Explicit forms of exponential energy decay rates are obtained by a direct method, for the solution of such boundary value problems without having to introduce any boundary feedback.

Asymptotic Dynamics Of Attractive-Repulsive Swarms, Andrew J. Leverentz '08, Chad M. Topaz, Andrew J. Bernoff Jul 2009

Asymptotic Dynamics Of Attractive-Repulsive Swarms, Andrew J. Leverentz '08, Chad M. Topaz, Andrew J. Bernoff

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

We classify and predict the asymptotic dynamics of a class of swarming models. The model consists of a conservation equation in one dimension describing the movement of a population density field. The velocity is found by convolving the density with a kernel describing attractive-repulsive social interactions. The kernel’s first moment and its limiting behavior at the origin determine whether the population asymptotically spreads, contracts, or reaches steady state. For the spreading case, the dynamics approach those of the porous medium equation. The widening, compactly supported population has edges that behave like traveling waves whose speed, density, and slope we calculate. …

Finding Positive Solutions Of Boundary Value Dynamic Equations On Time Scale, Olusegun Michael Otunuga Jan 2009

Finding Positive Solutions Of Boundary Value Dynamic Equations On Time Scale, Olusegun Michael Otunuga

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This thesis is on the study of dynamic equations on time scale. Most often, the derivatives and anti-derivatives of functions are taken on the domain of real numbers, which cannot be used to solve some models like insect populations that are continuous while in season and then follow a difference scheme with variable step-size. They die out in winter, while the eggs are incubating or dormant; and then they hatch in a new season, giving rise to a non overlapping population. The general idea of my thesis is to find the conditions for having a positive solution of any boundary …

Variable Shape Parameter Strategies In Radial Basis Function Methods, Derek Sturgill Jan 2009

Variable Shape Parameter Strategies In Radial Basis Function Methods, Derek Sturgill

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The Radial Basis Function (RBF) method is an important tool in the interpolation of multidimensional scattered data. The method has several important properties. One is the ability to handle sparse and scattered data points. Another property is its ability to interpolate in more than one dimension. Furthermore, the Radial Basis Function method provides phenomenal accuracy which has made it very popular in many fields. Some examples of applications using the RBF method are numerical solutions to partial differential equations, image processing, and cartography. This thesis involves researching Radial Basis Functions using different shape parameter strategies. First, we introduce the Radial …

Identifying Almost Invariant Sets In Stochastic Dynamical Systems, Lora Billings, Ira Schwartz Jan 2008

Identifying Almost Invariant Sets In Stochastic Dynamical Systems, Lora Billings, Ira Schwartz

Department of Mathematics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

We consider the approximation of fluctuation induced almost invariant sets arising from stochastic dynamical systems. The dynamical evolution of densities is derived from the stochastic Frobenius– Perron operator. Given a stochastic kernel with a known distribution, approximate almost invariant sets are found by translating the problem into an eigenvalue problem derived from reversible Markov processes. Analytic and computational examples of the methods are used to illustrate the technique, and are shown to reveal the probability transport between almost invariant sets in nonlinear stochastic systems. Both small and large noise cases are considered. © 2008 American Institute of Physics.

Non-Preemptive Shunting In M/M/1 And Dynamic Service Queueing Systems, Steven Lacek Jan 2008

Non-Preemptive Shunting In M/M/1 And Dynamic Service Queueing Systems, Steven Lacek

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

We provide a study of two queueing systems, namely, an M/M/1 queueing system in which an incoming customer shunts, or skips line, and a dynamic server in an infinite capacity system moving among service nodes. In the former, we explore various aspects of the system, including waiting time, and the relationships between shunting and position in queue and rate of service. Through use of global balance equations, we find the probability that an arriving non-priority customer, finding customers waiting in the system, will shunt to a position other than behind the queue. In the latter, we explore a system in …
