(R2147) Effect Of Mass Variation With Log-Logistic Distribution In Perturbed Interacting Cr3bp, Abdullah Abdullah, Majhar Ali, S. K. Sahdev

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

This paper investigates the motion of the infinitesimal body in the perturbed restricted three-body problem where the primary is heterogeneous in shape and secondary is with modified Newtonian potential. With the use of log-logistic distribution, space-time transformation and the above-said perturbations, we determine the equations of motion and quasi-Jacobian integral. Further, we numerically perform the locations of equilibrium points, their stability, regions of motion, periodic orbits and Poincaré surfaces of section.

(R2191) The Study Of Stokes Drag In The R4bp Under The Effect Of Coriolis And Centrifugal Forces With Variable Mass, Amit Mittal, Krishan Pal, Rajiv Aggarwal, Rajveer Singh

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we examine the existence, locations, and stability of the equilibrium points under the combined effects of Stokes drag and small perturbations in the Coriolis and centrifugal forces in the triangular restricted four-body problem (TR4BP) with variable mass. A triangular (Lagrangian) configuration is formed by the three primary bodies, which occupy the vertices of an equilateral triangle. All the primaries are treated as point masses to study the dynamical behavior of an infinitesimal body. The numerical results indicate that, under the influence of Stokes drag, none of the equilibrium points lie along a straight line. The centrifugal force …

Measuring Stock Market Inefficiency Using A Multilayer Composite Efficiency Index: A Case Of The Egyptian Exchange, Patrick K. Owido, Hiroki Sayama May 2026

Measuring Stock Market Inefficiency Using A Multilayer Composite Efficiency Index: A Case Of The Egyptian Exchange, Patrick K. Owido, Hiroki Sayama

Northeast Journal of Complex Systems (NEJCS)

Financial markets play a critical role in resource allocation. Their performance depends on the decisions of millions of independent investors constantly reacting to one another. Their informational efficiency remains a subject of debate across economic systems. When informational efficiency is present at the weak form, historical price information should not consistently predict future returns. Several empirical tests of this hypothesis often focus on the behavior of aggregate market indices, and use individual efficiency proxies such as autocorrelation, GARCH-type volatility, or entropy-based measures to measure efficiency. This has often yielded mixed results, particularly in emerging markets. Here we show that testing …

Bifurcation Exploration Of Ion Acoustic Solitons Formation Of A Nonlinear Beta Fractional Kadomtsev-Petviashvili Burger Model In Plasma State, Mst. Razia Pervin, Alrazi Abdeljabbar, Fahad Sameer Alshammari, Mst. Shekha Khatun, Harun Or-Roshid

Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Simulation with Applications

This research presents an extensive investigation of Ion acoustic soliton dynamics governed by a Beta-fractional Kadomtsev-Petviashvili-Burgurs (KPB) model. By engaging the planar dynamical system scheme in aggregation with the extended $(\phi, \psi)$ expansion, Kudryashov expansion, and the NMKM analytic schemes, we create a broad class of exact nonlinear pattern wave solutions. The local stability edifice of the fractional plasma model is explored through bifurcation theory, enabling the far-reaching classification of all admissible phase diagrams. Conforming Ion acoustic wave structures allied with every detour alignment are systematically assembled. Owing to the fractional and dissipative appearances of the model, an all-embracing assortment …

Assessing The Geomechanical Modelling Of Underground Reservoir For Co₂ Storage Trapping Mechanisms, Bonavian Hasiholan, Mohammed Ali Farea, Elhassan Mostafa Abdallah, Sami Abdelrahman M. Yagoub, Yasir Mukhtar

Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Simulation with Applications

Effective carbon dioxide (CO₂) storage is essential for mitigating climate change amid increasing global greenhouse gas emissions. This study investigates the influence of geomechanics on CO₂ storage performance within carbon capture and storage (CCS), focusing on structural, residual, and solubility trapping mechanisms using a fully coupled modeling framework. Two numerical models, with and without geomechanical effects, are developed to evaluate impacts on reservoir behavior, CO₂ migration, and trapping efficiency. Each mechanism is analyzed separately and within an integrated framework to assess their combined contributions. Results indicate that geomechanical coupling increases reservoir pressure, reduces CO₂ flow velocity, enhances migration control, and …

Optimal Control Of Stochastic Systems: A Numerical Study Of The Stochastic Linear Quadratic Regulator Framework, Gülşen Orucova Büyüköz, Yaprak Güldoğan Dericioğlu, Tuğçem Partal Dec 2025

Optimal Control Of Stochastic Systems: A Numerical Study Of The Stochastic Linear Quadratic Regulator Framework, Gülşen Orucova Büyüköz, Yaprak Güldoğan Dericioğlu, Tuğçem Partal

Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Simulation with Applications

Optimal control of stochastic linear systems is fundamental in control theory, with applications in robotics, finance, and engineering. The Stochastic Linear Quadratic Regulator (SLQR) derives optimal feedback laws via the Riccati equation but requires numerical discretization of the resulting stochastic dynamics. Despite extensive studies on numerical methods for stochastic differential equations, their performance within the SLQR framework remains insufficiently explored. This study compares two predictor–corrector schemes of different orders: the Order 1.0 Predictor-Corrector (PC) method and the Order 2.0 Weak PC method. A one-dimensional linear quadratic problem with a closed-form solution enables precise error evaluation against the analytical trajectory. Convergence …

(R2122) Analysis Of Halo Orbits In The Elliptical R3bp With Mass Variation, Majhar Ali, Abdullah . Dec 2025

(R2122) Analysis Of Halo Orbits In The Elliptical R3bp With Mass Variation, Majhar Ali, Abdullah .

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The elliptic restricted three-body problem investigates the motion behaviour of the variable mass infinitesimal body under the gravitational forces of the radiated oblate primary and dipole secondary. The equations of motion of the infinitesimal body are determined using Jeans law and Meshcherskii space time transformations. Using the Lindstedt-Poincaré method, we perform the solutions of the equations of motion. With the use of these solutions and the equations of motion, we numerically illustrate the time series, phase spaces, projections and the Halo orbits.

Irreversible K-Threshold Number Ck(G) And Saturation Probability P[G] For Corona Product And Double Corona Product Graphs, Eric J. Moon, Soumya Bhoumik, Paul Flesher Apr 2025

Irreversible K-Threshold Number Ck(G) And Saturation Probability P[G] For Corona Product And Double Corona Product Graphs, Eric J. Moon, Soumya Bhoumik, Paul Flesher

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

We discuss the Irreversible k-conversion process for graphs, where a vertex becomes saturated and remains saturated indefinitely if at least k of its neighbors are saturated. We investigate sets S0, which when initially saturated, lead to complete graph saturation. We are interested in the minimum |S0| = Ck(G), called the k-threshold number. We consider the construction of the Corona Product Graphs (of Cn and Kp). Additionally, we extend our analysis by defining and exploring Double Corona Product Graphs (of Cn and Kp). Then we incorporate …

Counting Rotational Sets For Laminations Of The Unit Disk From First Principles, Michael J. Moorman, Gabriel B. Quijano, Matthew C. Williams Jr. Mar 2025

Counting Rotational Sets For Laminations Of The Unit Disk From First Principles, Michael J. Moorman, Gabriel B. Quijano, Matthew C. Williams Jr.

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

By studying laminations of the unit disk, we can gain insight into the structure of Julia sets of polynomials and their dynamics in the complex plane. The polynomials of a given degree, d, have a parameter space. The hyperbolic components of such parameter spaces are in correspondence to rotational polygons, or classes of "rotational sets'', which we study in this paper. By studying the count of such rotational sets, and therefore the underlying structure of these rotational sets and polygons, we can gain insight into the interrelationship among hyperbolic components of the parameter space of these polynomials.

These rotational sets …

Mathematical Modelling Of Disease Outbreak, Favour Christian, Matthew Molloy Dec 2024

Mathematical Modelling Of Disease Outbreak, Favour Christian, Matthew Molloy

SURE Journal: Science Undergraduate Research Experience Journal

Establishing a model framework for more research necessitates a thorough understanding of the causes, distribution, prevalence, and evolution of infectious illnesses. The main mathematical concept used in this modelling simulation is ordinary differential equations (ODEs). The purpose of this study was to investigate the significance of the many criteria linked to a zombie virus spread. The zombie framework provides an accessible and relatively simple representation of the nature of infectious disease spread, allowing for tractable assumptions and the development of more complex situations.

The models are designed around a zombie outbreak in which the zombie virus is spread through a …

Relative Equilibria Of Pinwheel Point Mass Systems In A Planar Gravitational Field, Ritwik Gaur Sep 2024

Relative Equilibria Of Pinwheel Point Mass Systems In A Planar Gravitational Field, Ritwik Gaur

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

In this paper, we consider a planar case of the full two-body problem (F2BP) where one body is a pinwheel (four point masses connected via two perpendicular massless rods) and the other is a point mass. Relative equilibria (RE) are defined to be ordered pairs (r, θ) such that there exists a rotating reference frame under which the two bodies are in equilibrium when the distance between the point mass and the center of the pinwheel is r and the angle of the pinwheel within its orbit is θ. We prove that relative equilibria exist for …

A Measure Of Interactive Complexity In Network Models, Will Deter Aug 2024

A Measure Of Interactive Complexity In Network Models, Will Deter

Northeast Journal of Complex Systems (NEJCS)

This work presents an innovative approach to understanding and measuring complexity in network models. We revisit several classic characterizations of complexity and propose a novel measure that represents complexity as an interactive process. This measure incorporates transfer entropy and Jensen-Shannon divergence to quantify both the information transfer within a system and the dynamism of its constituents’ state changes. To validate our measure, we apply it to several well-known simulation models implemented in Python, including: two models of residential segregation, Conway’s Game of Life, and the Susceptible-Infected-Susceptible (SIS) model. Our results reveal varied trajectories of complexity, demonstrating the efficacy and sensitivity …

Reducing Food Scarcity: The Benefits Of Urban Farming, S.A. Claudell, Emilio Mejia

Journal of Nonprofit Innovation

Urban farming can enhance the lives of communities and help reduce food scarcity. This paper presents a conceptual prototype of an efficient urban farming community that can be scaled for a single apartment building or an entire community across all global geoeconomics regions, including densely populated cities and rural, developing towns and communities. When deployed in coordination with smart crop choices, local farm support, and efficient transportation then the result isn’t just sustainability, but also increasing fresh produce accessibility, optimizing nutritional value, eliminating the use of ‘forever chemicals’, reducing transportation costs, and fostering global environmental benefits.

Eigenvalue Algorithm For Hausdorff Dimension On Complex Kleinian Groups, Jacob Linden, Xuqing Wu Nov 2023

Eigenvalue Algorithm For Hausdorff Dimension On Complex Kleinian Groups, Jacob Linden, Xuqing Wu

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

In this manuscript, we present computational results approximating the Hausdorff dimension for the limit sets of complex Kleinian groups. We apply McMullen's eigenvalue algorithm \cite{mcmullen} in symmetric and non-symmetric examples of complex Kleinian groups, arising in both real and complex hyperbolic space. Numerical results are compared with asymptotic estimates in each case. Python code used to obtain all results and figures can be found at \url{https://github.com/WXML-HausDim/WXML-project}, all of which took only minutes to run on a personal computer.

On Cantor Sets Defined By Generalized Continued Fractions, Danielle Hedvig, Masha Gorodetski Sep 2022

On Cantor Sets Defined By Generalized Continued Fractions, Danielle Hedvig, Masha Gorodetski

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

We study a special class of generalized continuous fractions, both in real and complex settings, and show that in many cases, the set of numbers that can be represented by a continued fraction for that class form a Cantor set. Specifically, we study generalized continued fractions with a fixed absolute value and a variable coefficient sign. We ask the same question in the complex setting, allowing the coefficient's argument to be a multiple of \pi/2. The numerical experiments we conducted showed that in these settings the set of numbers formed by such continued fractions is a Cantor set for large …

(R1882) Effects Of Viscosity, Oblateness, And Finite Straight Segment On The Stability Of The Equilibrium Points In The Rr3bp, Bhavneet Kaur, Sumit Kumar, Rajiv Aggarwal Jun 2022

(R1882) Effects Of Viscosity, Oblateness, And Finite Straight Segment On The Stability Of The Equilibrium Points In The Rr3bp, Bhavneet Kaur, Sumit Kumar, Rajiv Aggarwal

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Associating the influences of viscosity and oblateness in the finite straight segment model of the Robe’s problem, the linear stability of the collinear and non-collinear equilibrium points for a small solid sphere m3 of density \rho3 are analyzed. This small solid sphere is moving inside the first primary m1 whose hydrostatic equilibrium figure is an oblate spheroid and it consists of an incompressible homogeneous fluid of density \rho1. The second primary m2 is a finite straight segment of length 2l. The existence of the equilibrium points is discussed after deriving the pertinent …

On The Rectilinear Motion Of Three Bodies Mutually Attracting Each Other, Sylvio R. Bistafa Aug 2021

On The Rectilinear Motion Of Three Bodies Mutually Attracting Each Other, Sylvio R. Bistafa

Euleriana

This is an annotated translation from Latin of E327 -- De motu rectilineo trium corporum se mutuo attrahentium (“On the rectilinear motion of three bodies mutually attracting each other”). In this publication, Euler considers three bodies lying on a straight line, which are attracted to each other by central forces inversely proportional to the square of their separation distance (inverse-square law). Here Euler finds that the parameter that controls the relative distances among the bodies is given by a quintic function.

Mapping Polynomial Dynamics, Devin Becker Aug 2021

Mapping Polynomial Dynamics, Devin Becker

DePaul Discoveries

We explore the complex dynamics of a family of polynomials defined on the complex plane by f(z) = azm(1+z/d)d where a is a complex number not equal to zero, and m and d are at least 2. These functions have three finite critical points, one of which has behavior that differs as we change our parameter values. We analyze the dynamical behavior at this critical point, with a particular interest in the structures that appear in the filled Julia set K(f) and the basin of infinity A_{\infty}(f). The behavior of the family is extremely sensitive to our …

Lebesgue Measure Preserving Thompson Monoid And Its Properties Of Decomposition And Generators, William Li Jul 2021

Lebesgue Measure Preserving Thompson Monoid And Its Properties Of Decomposition And Generators, William Li

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

This paper defines the Lebesgue measure preserving Thompson monoid, denoted by G, which is modeled on the Thompson group F except that the elements of G preserve the Lebesgue measure and can be non-invertible. The paper shows that any element of the monoid G is the composition of a finite number of basic elements of the monoid G and the generators of the Thompson group F. However, unlike the Thompson group F, the monoid G is not finitely generated. The paper then defines equivalence classes of the monoid G, use them to construct a monoid H …

Disjointness Of Linear Fractional Actions On Serre Trees, Henry W. Talbott Jul 2021

Disjointness Of Linear Fractional Actions On Serre Trees, Henry W. Talbott

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

Serre showed that, for a discrete valuation field, the group of linear fractional transformations acts on an infinite regular tree with vertex degree determined by the residue degree of the field. Since the p-adics and the polynomials over the finite field of order p act on isomorphic trees, we may ask whether pairs of actions from these two groups are ever conjugate as tree automorphisms. We analyze permutations induced on finite vertex sets, and show a permutation classification result for actions by these linear fractional transformation groups. We prove that actions by specific subgroups of these groups are conjugate only …

Entropic Dynamics Of Networks, Felipe Xavier Costa, Pedro Pessoa Mar 2021

Entropic Dynamics Of Networks, Felipe Xavier Costa, Pedro Pessoa

Northeast Journal of Complex Systems (NEJCS)

Here we present the entropic dynamics formalism for networks. That is, a framework for the dynamics of graphs meant to represent a network derived from the principle of maximum entropy and the rate of transition is obtained taking into account the natural information geometry of probability distributions. We apply this framework to the Gibbs distribution of random graphs obtained with constraints on the node connectivity. The information geometry for this graph ensemble is calculated and the dynamical process is obtained as a diffusion equation. We compare the steady state of this dynamics to degree distributions found on real-world networks.

Controlling Aircraft Yaw Movement By Interval Type-2 Fuzzy Logic, Yamama Shafeek, Laith Majeed, Rasha Naji

Emirates Journal for Engineering Research

Aircraft yaw movement is essential in maneuvering; it has been controlled by some methods which achieved tracking but not fast enough. This paper performs the dynamic modeling of aircraft yaw movement and develops PI and PI-like interval type-2 fuzzy logic controller for the model. The mathematical model is derived by inserting the parameters values of single-engine Navion aircraft into standard equations. Using Matlab/ Simulink platform, the controllers' effectivity is tested and verified in two different cases; system without disturbance and when system is disturbed by some wind gust to investigate the system robustness. Simulation results show that PI controller response …

Period Estimation And Noise In A Neutrally Stable Stochastic Oscillator, Kevin R. Sanft, Ben F. M. Intoy Oct 2020

Period Estimation And Noise In A Neutrally Stable Stochastic Oscillator, Kevin R. Sanft, Ben F. M. Intoy

Spora: A Journal of Biomathematics

The periods of the orbits for the well-mixed cyclic three-species Lotka-Volterra model far away from the fixed point are studied. For finite system sizes, a discrete stochastic approach is employed and periods are found via wavelet analysis. As the system size is increased, a hierarchy of approximations ranging from Poisson noise to Gaussian noise to deterministic models are utilized. Based on the deterministic equations, a mathematical relationship between a conserved quantity of the model and the period of the population oscillations is found. Exploiting this property we then study the deterministic conserved quantity and period noise in finite size systems.

New Experimental Investigations For The 3𝑥+1 Problem: The Binary Projection Of The Collatz Map, Benjamin Bairrington, Aaron Okano Mar 2019

New Experimental Investigations For The 3𝑥+1 Problem: The Binary Projection Of The Collatz Map, Benjamin Bairrington, Aaron Okano

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

The 3x + 1 Problem, or the Collatz Conjecture, was originally developed in the early 1930's. It has remained unsolved for over eighty years. Throughout its history, traditional methods of mathematical problem solving have only succeeded in proving heuristic properties of the mapping. Because the problem has proven to be so difficult to solve, many think it might be undecidable. In this paper we brie y follow the history of the 3x + 1 problem from its creation in the 1930's to the modern day. Its history is tied into the development of the Cosper Algorithm, which maps binary sequences …

Climate Change In A Differential Equations Course: Using Bifurcation Diagrams To Explore Small Changes With Big Effects, Justin Dunmyre, Nicholas Fortune, Tianna Bogart, Chris Rasmussen, Karen Keene

CODEE Journal

The environmental phenomenon of climate change is of critical importance to today's science and global communities. Differential equations give a powerful lens onto this phenomenon, and so we should commit to discussing the mathematics of this environmental issue in differential equations courses. Doing so highlights the power of linking differential equations to environmental and social justice causes, and also brings important science to the forefront in the mathematics classroom. In this paper, we provide an extended problem, appropriate for a first course in differential equations, that uses bifurcation analysis to study climate change. Specifically, through studying hysteresis, this problem highlights …

Role Of Combinatorial Complexity In Genetic Networks, Sharon Yang Feb 2019

Role Of Combinatorial Complexity In Genetic Networks, Sharon Yang

SMU Journal of Undergraduate Research

A common motif found in genetic networks is the formation of large complexes. One difficulty in modeling this motif is the large number of possible intermediate complexes that can form. For instance, if a complex could contain up to 10 different proteins, 210 possible intermediate complexes can form. Keeping track of all complexes is difficult and often ignored in mathematical models. Here we present an algorithm to code ordinary differential equations (ODEs) to model genetic networks with combinatorial complexity. In these routines, the general binding rules, which counts for the majority of the reactions, are implemented automatically, thus the users …

The Battle Against Malaria: A Teachable Moment, Randy K. Schwartz Feb 2017

The Battle Against Malaria: A Teachable Moment, Randy K. Schwartz

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

Malaria has been humanity’s worst public health problem throughout recorded history. Mathematical methods are needed to understand which factors are relevant to the disease and to develop counter-measures against it. This article and the accompanying exercises provide examples of those methods for use in lower- or upper-level courses dealing with probability, statistics, or population modeling. These can be used to illustrate such concepts as correlation, causation, conditional probability, and independence. The article explains how the apparent link between sickle cell trait and resistance to malaria was first verified in Uganda using the chi-squared probability distribution. It goes on to explain …

A Mathematician Weighs In On The Evolution Debate, Kris H. Green Jul 2011

A Mathematician Weighs In On The Evolution Debate, Kris H. Green

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

There are a variety of reasons underlying the lack of public acceptance for the theory of evolution in the United States. An overlooked cause is related to problems with the mathematics curriculum in the K-12 setting. In this essay, we examine this relationship and propose changes to the mathematics curriculum that could improve mathematical thinking while also providing a basis for understanding theories, like evolution, that are poorly understood.
