Identifiability, Sequentiality And Infinity, Jose L. Menaldi May 2026

Identifiability, Sequentiality And Infinity, Jose L. Menaldi

Mathematics Faculty Research Publications

Abstract: A definition of identifiable-sets is used with sequential analysis to establish a realm of mathematics. Within this imaginary world, a specific consonant between infinite sets and sequentiality is reached.  This consonant allows some mathematical constructions to model pieces of the reality, based on dual philosophy and physics itself.  There is an effort made to render this understandable for the scientific community.

Rosenzweig's Elements And Universal History, Martin Zwick Apr 2026

Rosenzweig's Elements And Universal History, Martin Zwick

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper uses Rosenzweig’s conception of the three elements of God, World, and Human from The Star of Redemption in a model of universal history. The model also has some relation to Rosenzweig’s geopolitical essay, Globus, which is very different from the meta-historical Star. Based on a systems-theoretic schema of events and processes, the model views human history in terms of three linked processes: a primary process labeled “World” – the origin and development of human society embedded in nature, a secondary process labeled “God” – the origin and development of the Axial religions and philosophies, and a …

Gliders On The Sca Model, Alexa Renner Jan 2026

Gliders On The Sca Model, Alexa Renner

Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)

The Stranded Cellular Automata (SCA) model consists of a grid of cells which can each contain between zero and two strands apiece and two turning rules that control when strands turn and when they cross. While patterns on this model have been studied previously, such research has not needed an algebraic description of the model. We provide a formal algebraic definition of patterns on the model, define gliders on the model in a way which is semi-compatible with definitions of gliders in other cellular automata models, and classify all 1- and 2-stranded gliders on this model. In addition, we prove …

Stability Analysis Of Thermohaline Convection With A Time-Varying Shear Flow Using The Lyapunov Method, Kalin Kochnev Dec 2025

Stability Analysis Of Thermohaline Convection With A Time-Varying Shear Flow Using The Lyapunov Method, Kalin Kochnev

Honors Scholar Theses

This work applies the Lyapunov method to identify instabilities and compute the growth rate of a linear time-varying system. The linear system studied describes cold fresh water on top of hot salty water with a periodically time-varying background shear flow. A time-dependent weighting matrix is employed to construct a Lyapunov function candidate. The resulting linear matrix inequalities are discretized in time using the forward Euler method. As the number of temporal discretization points increases, the growth rate predicted by the Lyapunov method or Floquet theory, used for comparison, will converge to the same value obtained from numerical simulations. Furthermore, the …

Math Meets Climate: The Energy Balance Model, Maria I. Sanchez Muniz

Open Educational Resources

This assignment introduces students to the mathematics of Earth’s climate through the classical energy balance model. Students analyze how incoming solar radiation, outgoing thermal radiation, and temperature-dependent albedo interact to determine Earth’s equilibrium temperature. Using analytical calculations and computational tools, students identify equilibrium states, assess their stability, and interpret the results through the lens of dynamical systems and bifurcation theory. The activity builds conceptual understanding of climate feedbacks, greenhouse effects, and tipping behavior using a transparent, one-variable model. Designed for applied mathematics and interdisciplinary STEM courses, this assignment emphasizes computation, physical interpretation, and real-world relevance. It is released as a …

Understanding Enso Through Mathematical Models, Maria I. Sanchez Muniz

Open Educational Resources

This assignment introduces students to conceptual models of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and guides them through a structured investigation of their physical and mathematical foundations. Students analyze the recharge–oscillator and delayed–oscillator frameworks, explore how differential equations capture ocean–atmosphere interactions, and evaluate parameter-driven changes in oscillatory behavior. A key component of the work is the guided use of generative AI as a research tool: students employ AI models to locate peer-reviewed literature, interrogate model extensions, and refine their understanding of complex mechanisms, while synthesizing all final explanations in their own words. By blending classical climate modeling with modern AI-supported inquiry, …

Comparison Of Linear Control Techniques For The Underactuated Nonlinear Quadcopter System, Ian Golsby Apr 2024

Comparison Of Linear Control Techniques For The Underactuated Nonlinear Quadcopter System, Ian Golsby

Mathematics Senior Capstone Papers

Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are a prevalent technology in many fields. They must be lightweight, efficient, and stable in order to carry out their objectives or support a payload. The control system that maintains a UAV’s attitude directly contributes to the stability and efficiency of the UAV, and more efficient UAVs can be made more lightweight by reducing battery size. Because the UAV has only four degrees of control (one per motor) but requires twelve dimensions to describe its orientation and position over time, it is considered an under-actuated nonlinear complex system. In this study, we compare various linear control …

Optimizing Microbe-Infected Mosquito Release: A Stochastic Model For Malaria Prevention, Steeven Belvinos Affognon, Henri E.Z. Tonnang, Philip Ngare, Benard Kipchumba Kiplangat, Shirley Abelman, Jeremy K. Herren

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Malaria remains a critical public health challenge in Africa, demanding innovative control strategies. This study introduces a novel approach using Microsporidia MB-infected mosquitoes and stochastic optimal control within a Lévy process framework to regulate mosquito release strategies. The primary goal is to optimize Microsporidia MB prevalence within mosquito populations to disrupt Plasmodium transmission to humans. By incorporating Lévy noise into the modeling process, we capture the inherent randomness of mosquito dynamics, improving intervention accuracy. The model, guided by the Hamilton–Jacobi–Bellman (HJB) equation, optimizes release protocols while accounting for key environmental factors like seasonality and temperature fluctuations. Results show that intervention …

Supply Chain Simulation Of Manufacturing Shirts Using System Dynamics For Sustainability, Gurinder Kaur, Ron Kander Oct 2023

Supply Chain Simulation Of Manufacturing Shirts Using System Dynamics For Sustainability, Gurinder Kaur, Ron Kander

School of Design and Engineering Papers

In supply chain management (SCM), goods and services flow from the raw materials stage to the end user with complexities and uncertainty at each stage. Computer modeling and simulation is a particularly useful method to examine supply chain operational issues because it can solve operational complexities that are challenging and time consuming to analyze. Manufacturing companies fear losing valuable time and assets during the manufacturing process; the inaccurate estimation of raw materials, human capital, or physical infrastructure not only leads to monetary loss for the manufacturing unit, but also has a detrimental effect on the environment. The purpose of this …

Biopsychosocial Resilience Through A Complex Adaptive Systems Lens: A Narrative Review Of Nonlinear Modeling Approaches, Adam W. Kiefer, David Pincus Oct 2023

Biopsychosocial Resilience Through A Complex Adaptive Systems Lens: A Narrative Review Of Nonlinear Modeling Approaches, Adam W. Kiefer, David Pincus

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

Human resilience is often considered as static traits using a reductionist approach. More recent work has demonstrated it to be a dynamic and emergent property of complex systems. This narrative review explores human resilience through a self-organizing framework with a specific emphasis on the application of nonlinear modeling approaches. Four classes of approaches are examined: univariate dynamics, bivariate coupling, topological modeling, and network modeling. Univariate dynamics capture the temporal structure and flexibility within a single time series, while bivariate coupling approaches quantify the interaction dynamics and coordination between two time series. Topological modeling identifies bifurcations and attractor dynamics as signals …

Applying Hallgren’S Algorithm For Solving Pell’S Equation To Finding The Irrational Slope Of The Launch Of A Billiard Ball, Sangheon Choi Apr 2023

Applying Hallgren’S Algorithm For Solving Pell’S Equation To Finding The Irrational Slope Of The Launch Of A Billiard Ball, Sangheon Choi

Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)

This thesis is an exploration of Quantum Computing applied to Pell’s equation in an attempt to find solutions to the Billiard Ball Problem. Pell’s equation is a Diophantine equation in the form of x2 − ny2 = 1, where n is a given positive nonsquare integer, and integer solutions are sought for x and y. We will be applying Hallgren’s algorithm for finding irrational periods in functions, in the context of billiard balls and their movement on a friction-less unit square billiard table. Our central research question has been the following: Given the cutting sequence of the billiard …

Ecological Complexity And Avoiding Pest Resurgence: Intuitions From Mathematical Ecology, Theresa Ong, John H. Vandermeer Jan 2023

Ecological Complexity And Avoiding Pest Resurgence: Intuitions From Mathematical Ecology, Theresa Ong, John H. Vandermeer

Dartmouth Scholarship

Pest resurgence is defined by a predictable increase in pests following declines resulting from the implementation of pest management practices. This phenomenon is notorious; familiar in biblical references to cyclical plagues of locust and discussions of pesticide treadmills, where pests resurge following the evolution of pesticide resistance. Targeted “silver-bullet” approaches, whether chemical, mechanical, biological, or genetic in nature, apply a reductionist lens toward the removal of a specific target pest, often ignoring ecological context, by application of said silver-bullet. In this review article, we cover how past and recent developments in theoretical ecology and complex systems dynamics provide a general …

Dimension Theory Of Conformal Iterated Function Systems, Sharon Sneha Spaulding May 2022

Dimension Theory Of Conformal Iterated Function Systems, Sharon Sneha Spaulding

Honors Scholar Theses

This thesis is an expository investigation of the conformal iterated function system (CIFS) approach to fractals and their dimension theory. Conformal maps distort regions, subject to certain constraints, in a controlled way. Let $\mathcal{S} = (X, E, \{\phi_e\}_{e \in E})$ be an iterated function system where $X$ is a compact metric space, $E$ is a countable index set, and $\{\phi_e\}_{e \in E}$ is a family of injective and uniformly contracting maps. If the family of maps $\{\phi_e\}_{e \in E}$ is also conformal and satisfies the open set condition, then the distortion properties of conformal maps can be extended to the …

Local Finiteness And Automorphism Groups Of Low Complexity Subshifts, Ronnie Pavlov, Scott Schmieding Jan 2022

Local Finiteness And Automorphism Groups Of Low Complexity Subshifts, Ronnie Pavlov, Scott Schmieding

Mathematics: Faculty Scholarship

We prove that for any transitive subshift X with word complexity function cn(X), if lim inf(log(cn(X)/n)/(log log log n)) = 0, then the quotient group Aut(X, σ)/〈 σ〉 of the automorphism group of X by the subgroup generated by the shift σ is locally finite. We prove that significantly weaker upper bounds on cn(X) imply the same conclusion if the gap conjecture from geometric group theory is true. Our proofs rely on a general upper bound for the number of automorphisms of X of range n in terms of word complexity, which may be …

Measure-Theoretically Mixing Subshifts With Low Complexity, Darren Creutz, Ronnie Pavlov, Shaun Rodock Jan 2022

Measure-Theoretically Mixing Subshifts With Low Complexity, Darren Creutz, Ronnie Pavlov, Shaun Rodock

Mathematics: Faculty Scholarship

We introduce a class of rank-one transformations, which we call extremely elevated staircase transformations. We prove that they are measure-theoretically mixing and, for any f : N → N with f (n)/n increasing and ∑ 1/f (n) < ∞, that there exists an extremely elevated staircase with word complexity p(n) = o(f (n)). This improves the previously lowest known complexity for mixing subshifts, resolving a conjecture of Ferenczi.

Exo-Sir: An Epidemiological Model To Analyze The Impact Of Exogenous Spread Of Infection, Nirmal Kumar Sivaraman, Manas Gaur, Shivansh Baijal, Sakthi Balan Muthiah, Amit Sheth

Publications

Epidemics like Covid-19 and Ebola have impacted people's lives significantly. The impact of mobility of people across the countries or states in the spread of epidemics has been significant. The spread of disease due to factors local to the population under consideration is termed the endogenous spread. The spread due to external factors like migration, mobility, etc. is called the exogenous spread. In this paper, we introduce the Exo-SIR model, an extension of the popular SIR model and a few variants of the model. The novelty in our model is that it captures both the exogenous and endogenous spread of …

Reduced-Order Dynamic Modeling And Robust Nonlinear Control Of Fluid Flow Velocity Fields, Anu Kossery Jayaprakash, William Mackunis, Vladimir Golubev, Oksana Stalnov Dec 2021

Reduced-Order Dynamic Modeling And Robust Nonlinear Control Of Fluid Flow Velocity Fields, Anu Kossery Jayaprakash, William Mackunis, Vladimir Golubev, Oksana Stalnov

Publications

A robust nonlinear control method is developed for fluid flow velocity tracking, which formally addresses the inherent challenges in practical implementation of closed-loop active flow control systems. A key challenge being addressed here is flow control design to compensate for model parameter variations that can arise from actuator perturbations. The control design is based on a detailed reduced-order model of the actuated flow dynamics, which is rigorously derived to incorporate the inherent time-varying uncertainty in the both the model parameters and the actuator dynamics. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first robust nonlinear closed-loop active flow …

Lecture 08: Partial Eigen Decomposition Of Large Symmetric Matrices Via Thick-Restart Lanczos With Explicit External Deflation And Its Communication-Avoiding Variant, Zhaojun Bai Apr 2021

Lecture 08: Partial Eigen Decomposition Of Large Symmetric Matrices Via Thick-Restart Lanczos With Explicit External Deflation And Its Communication-Avoiding Variant, Zhaojun Bai

Mathematical Sciences Spring Lecture Series

There are continual and compelling needs for computing many eigenpairs of very large Hermitian matrix in physical simulations and data analysis. Though the Lanczos method is effective for computing a few eigenvalues, it can be expensive for computing a large number of eigenvalues. To improve the performance of the Lanczos method, in this talk, we will present a combination of explicit external deflation (EED) with an s-step variant of thick-restart Lanczos (s-step TRLan). The s-step Lanczos method can achieve an order of s reduction in data movement while the EED enables to compute eigenpairs in batches along with a number …

Lecture 10: Preconditioned Iterative Methods For Linear Systems, Edmond Chow Apr 2021

Lecture 10: Preconditioned Iterative Methods For Linear Systems, Edmond Chow

Mathematical Sciences Spring Lecture Series

Iterative methods for the solution of linear systems of equations – such as stationary, semi-iterative, and Krylov subspace methods – are classical methods taught in numerical analysis courses, but adapting these methods to run efficiently at large-scale on high-performance computers is challenging and a constantly evolving topic. Preconditioners – necessary to aid the convergence of iterative methods – come in many forms, from algebraic to physics-based, are regularly being developed for linear systems from different classes of problems, and similarly are evolving with high-performance computers. This lecture will cover the background and some recent developments on iterative methods and preconditioning …

The Fundamental Limit Theorem Of Countable Markov Chains, Nathanael Gentry Apr 2021

The Fundamental Limit Theorem Of Countable Markov Chains, Nathanael Gentry

Senior Honors Theses

In 1906, the Russian probabilist A.A. Markov proved that the independence of a sequence of random variables is not a necessary condition for a law of large numbers to exist on that sequence. Markov's sequences -- today known as Markov chains -- touch several deep results in dynamical systems theory and have found wide application in bibliometrics, linguistics, artificial intelligence, and statistical mechanics. After developing the appropriate background, we prove a modern formulation of the law of large numbers (fundamental theorem) for simple countable Markov chains and develop an elementary notion of ergodicity. Then, we apply these chain convergence results …

Subsystems Of Transitive Subshifts With Linear Complexity, Andrew Dykstra, Nicholas Ormes, Ronnie Pavlov Mar 2021

Subsystems Of Transitive Subshifts With Linear Complexity, Andrew Dykstra, Nicholas Ormes, Ronnie Pavlov

Mathematics: Faculty Scholarship

We bound the number of distinct minimal subsystems of a given transitive subshift of linear complexity, continuing work of Ormes and Pavlov [On the complexity function for sequences which are not uniformly recurrent. Dynamical Systems and Random Processes (Contemporary Mathematics, 736). American Mathematical Society, Providence, RI, 2019, pp. 125--137]. We also bound the number of generic measures such a subshift can support based on its complexity function. Our measure-theoretic bounds generalize those of Boshernitzan [A unique ergodicity of minimal symbolic flows with linear block growth. J. Anal. Math.44(1) (1984), 77–96] and are closely related to those of Cyr and Kra …

Using A Hybrid Agent-Based And Equation Based Model To Test School Closure Policies During A Measles Outbreak, Elizabeth Hunter, John D. Kelleher

Articles

Background

In order to be prepared for an infectious disease outbreak it is important to know what interventions will or will not have an impact on reducing the outbreak. While some interventions might have a greater effect in mitigating an outbreak, others might only have a minor effect but all interventions will have a cost in implementation. Estimating the effectiveness of an intervention can be done using computational modelling. In particular, comparing the results of model runs with an intervention in place to control runs where no interventions were used can help to determine what interventions will have the greatest …

On Subshifts With Slow Forbidden Word Growth, Ronnie Pavlov Jan 2021

On Subshifts With Slow Forbidden Word Growth, Ronnie Pavlov

Mathematics: Faculty Scholarship

In this work, we treat subshifts, defined in terms of an alphabet A and (usually infinite) forbidden list F, where the number of n-letter words in F has ‘slow growth rate’ in n. We show that such subshifts are well behaved in several ways; for instance, they are boundedly supermultiplicative in the sense of Baker and Ghenciu [Dynamical properties of S-gap shifts and other shift spaces. J. Math. Anal. Appl.430(2) (2015), 633–647] and they have unique measures of maximal entropy with the K-property and which satisfy Gibbs bounds on large (measure-theoretically) sets. The main tool in our proofs is a …

Dynamics Of The Meromorphic Families $F_\Lambda=\Lambda \Tan^Pz^Q$, Tao Chen, Linda Keen Jan 2021

Dynamics Of The Meromorphic Families $F_\Lambda=\Lambda \Tan^Pz^Q$, Tao Chen, Linda Keen

Publications and Research

This paper continues our investigation of the dynamics of families of transcendental meromorphic functions with finitely many singular values all of which are finite. Here we look at a generalization of the family of polynomials Pa(z) =zd−1(z−da/(d−1)), the family fλ=λtanpzq. These functions have a super-attractive fixed point, and, depending on p, one or two asymptotic values. Although many of the dynamical properties generalize, the existence of an essential singularity and of poles of multiplicity greater than one implies that significantly different techniques are required here. Adding transcendental methods to standard …

In this paper, we apply the concept of neutrosophic numbers to solve a systems of neutrophic linear equations using symbolic computation. Also, we utilize Jupyter, which is supported in Google Colaboratory for performing symbolic computation. The sympy library of Python is used to perform the process of neutrosophic computation. Systems of neutrosophic linear equations are solved through symbolic computation in Python. A case study was developed for the determination of vehicular traffic with indeterminacy. This king of computation opens new ways to deal with indeterminacy in real-world problems.

A Hybrid Agent-Based And Equation Based Model For The Spread Of Infectious Diseases, Elizabeth Hunter, Brian Mac Namee, John D. Kelleher Oct 2020

A Hybrid Agent-Based And Equation Based Model For The Spread Of Infectious Diseases, Elizabeth Hunter, Brian Mac Namee, John D. Kelleher

Articles

Both agent-based models and equation-based models can be used to model the spread of an infectious disease. Equation-based models have been shown to capture the overall dynamics of a disease outbreak while agent-based models are able to capture heterogeneous characteristics of agents that drive the spread of an outbreak. However, agent-based models are computationally intensive. To capture the advantages of both the equation-based and agent-based models, we create a hybrid model where the disease component of the hybrid model switches between agent-based and equation-based. The switch is determined using the number of agents infected. We first test the model at …

Finite-Time State Estimation For An Inverted Pendulum Under Input-Multiplicative Uncertainty, William Mackunis, Sergey V. Drakunov, Anu Kossery Jayaprakash, Krishna Bhavithavya Kidambi, Mahmut Reyhanoglu

A sliding mode observer is presented, which is rigorously proven to achieve finite-time state estimation of a dual-parallel underactuated (i.e., single-input multi-output) cart inverted pendulum system in the presence of parametric uncertainty. A salient feature of the proposed sliding mode observer design is that a rigorous analysis is provided, which proves finite-time estimation of the complete system state in the presence of input-multiplicative parametric uncertainty. The performance of the proposed observer design is demonstrated through numerical case studies using both sliding mode control (SMC)- and linear quadratic regulator (LQR)-based closed-loop control systems. The main contribution presented here is the rigorous …
