Finite-Time State Estimation For An Inverted Pendulum Under Input-Multiplicative Uncertainty, William Mackunis, Sergey V. Drakunov, Anu Kossery Jayaprakash, Krishna Bhavithavya Kidambi, Mahmut Reyhanoglu

Publications

A sliding mode observer is presented, which is rigorously proven to achieve finite-time state estimation of a dual-parallel underactuated (i.e., single-input multi-output) cart inverted pendulum system in the presence of parametric uncertainty. A salient feature of the proposed sliding mode observer design is that a rigorous analysis is provided, which proves finite-time estimation of the complete system state in the presence of input-multiplicative parametric uncertainty. The performance of the proposed observer design is demonstrated through numerical case studies using both sliding mode control (SMC)- and linear quadratic regulator (LQR)-based closed-loop control systems. The main contribution presented here is the rigorous …

Period Estimation And Noise In A Neutrally Stable Stochastic Oscillator, Kevin R. Sanft, Ben F. M. Intoy Oct 2020

Period Estimation And Noise In A Neutrally Stable Stochastic Oscillator, Kevin R. Sanft, Ben F. M. Intoy

Spora: A Journal of Biomathematics

The periods of the orbits for the well-mixed cyclic three-species Lotka-Volterra model far away from the fixed point are studied. For finite system sizes, a discrete stochastic approach is employed and periods are found via wavelet analysis. As the system size is increased, a hierarchy of approximations ranging from Poisson noise to Gaussian noise to deterministic models are utilized. Based on the deterministic equations, a mathematical relationship between a conserved quantity of the model and the period of the population oscillations is found. Exploiting this property we then study the deterministic conserved quantity and period noise in finite size systems.

Analyzing Network Topology For Ddos Mitigation Using The Abelian Sandpile Model, Bhavana Panchumarthi, Monroe Ame Stephenson Aug 2020

Analyzing Network Topology For Ddos Mitigation Using The Abelian Sandpile Model, Bhavana Panchumarthi, Monroe Ame Stephenson

altREU Projects

A Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) is a cyber attack, which is capable of triggering a cascading failure in the victim network. While DDoS attacks come in different forms, their general goal is to make a network's service unavailable to its users. A common, but risky, countermeasure is to blackhole or null route the source, or the attacked destination. When a server becomes a blackhole, or referred to as the sink in the paper, the data that is assigned to it "disappears" or gets deleted. Our research shows how mathematical modeling can propose an alternative blackholing strategy that could improve …

Local Lagged Adapted Generalized Method Of Moments Dynamic Process, Gangaram S. Ladde, Olusegun M. Otunuga, Nathan G. Ladde

Mathematics Faculty Research

Aspects of a local lagged adapted generalized method of moments (LLGMM) dynamic process are described herein. In one embodiment, the LLGMM process includes obtaining a discrete time data set as past state information of a continuous time dynamic process over a time interval, developing a stochastic model of the continuous time dynamic process, generating a discrete time interconnected dynamic model of local sample mean and variance statistic processes (DTIDMLSMVSP) based on the stochastic model, and calculating a plurality of admissible parameter estimates for the stochastic model using the DTIDMLSMVSP. Further, in some embodiments, the process further includes, for at least …

Optical Soliton Perturbation With Quadratic-Cubic Nonlinearity, Asma Mir

Student Works (2020-2029)

Solitons can be defined as wave packets that can travel undistorted across long distances even transcontinental and transoceanic. They serve as modern telecommunication means through cables and optical fibers for fast Internet activities. To maintain high-fidelity and time sensitive transmission, optical pulses manage the efficient flow of data. From the last few years, Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation (NLSE) has been a great attraction of research activities across the globe. The governing model is the Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation (NLSE). From a mathematical standpoint, NLSE is a nonlinear partial differential equation (PDE) that has been studied in a variety of other areas of …

Discrete-Time Control With Non-Constant Discount Factor, Héctor Jasso-Fuentes, José-Luis Menaldi, Tomás Prieto-Rumeau Jun 2020

Discrete-Time Control With Non-Constant Discount Factor, Héctor Jasso-Fuentes, José-Luis Menaldi, Tomás Prieto-Rumeau

Mathematics Faculty Research Publications

This paper deals with discrete-time Markov decision processes (MDPs) with Borel state and action spaces, and total expected discounted cost optimality criterion. We assume that the discount factor is not constant: it may depend on the state and action; moreover, it can even take the extreme values zero or one. We propose sufficient conditions on the data of the model ensuring the existence of optimal control policies and allowing the characterization of the optimal value function as a solution to the dynamic programming equation. As a particular case of these MDPs with varying discount factor, we study MDPs with stopping, …

Optimal Control Of A Rumor Propagation Model With Different Propagation Degrees In Social Network, Yingfeng Tang

Student Works (2020-2029)

Rumor is a social interaction of information, and its development is of great significance to human beings. In this paper, by studying the D K model and a rumor model spreading with rumor latent period, deduces the rumor model with differe nt propagation degrees of the spreaders. The two equilibrium points in the system are found through derivation. In real life, enterprises often ignore the reasonable planning of the cost of rumor control. By means of public education and media technology u sing by the authorities to debunk rumors, an optimal control problem i s established. The Pontryagin’s maximum principle …

Symmetric Rigidity For Circle Endomorphisms With Bounded Geometry And Their Dual Maps, John Adamski Jun 2020

Symmetric Rigidity For Circle Endomorphisms With Bounded Geometry And Their Dual Maps, John Adamski

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Let $f$ be a circle endomorphism of degree $d\geq2$ that generates a sequence of Markov partitions that either has bounded nearby geometry and bounded geometry, or else just has bounded geometry, with respect to normalized Lebesgue measure. We define the dual symbolic space $\S^*$ and the dual circle endomorphism $f^*=\tilde{h}\circ f\circ{h}^{-1}$, which is topologically conjugate to $f$. We describe some properties of the topological conjugacy $\tilde{h}$. We also describe an algorithm for generating arbitrary circle endomorphisms $f$ with bounded geometry that preserve Lebesgue measure and their corresponding dual circle endomorphisms $f^*$ as well as the conjugacy $\tilde{h}$, and implement it …

Periodic Points And Sharkovsky’S Theorem, Luke J. Seaton May 2020

Periodic Points And Sharkovsky’S Theorem, Luke J. Seaton

Mathematics Senior Capstone Papers

The number of periodic points of a function depends on the context. The number of complex periodic points and rational periodic points have been shown to be infinite and finite, respectively, if f is a polynomial of degree at least 2. However, the number of real periodic points can be either finite or infinite. Sharkovskys Theorem states that if p is left of q in the “Sharkovsky ordering” and the continuous function f has a point of period p, then f also has a point of period q. This statement becomes very powerful when considering a function that has points …

Nonlocal Helmholtz Decompositions And Connections To Classical Counterparts, Andrew Haar, Petronela Radu May 2020

Nonlocal Helmholtz Decompositions And Connections To Classical Counterparts, Andrew Haar, Petronela Radu

UCARE: Research Products

In recent years nonlocal models have been successfully introduced in a variety of applications, such as dynamic fracture, nonlocal diffusion, flocking, and image processing. Thus, the development of a nonlocal calculus theory, together with the study of nonlocal operators has become the focus of many theoretical investigations. Our work focuses on a Helmholtz decomposition in the nonlocal (integral) framework. In the classical (differential) setting the Helmholtz decomposition states that we can decompose a three dimensional vector field as a sum of an irrotational function and a solenoidal function. We will define new nonlocal gradient and curl operators that allow us …

The Sir Models, Their Applications, And Approximations Of Their Rates, Christopher Cano May 2020

The Sir Models, Their Applications, And Approximations Of Their Rates, Christopher Cano

Mathematics Senior Capstone Papers

The SIR (Susceptible-Infected-Recovered) models are used to help predict the spread of diseases. The goals of this paper are: elaborating on the methods of approximating the recovery rate, infection rate, and loss of immunity rate, comparing the SIR models with these approximation methods to real world data, and determining the most accurate combination of the approximation methods for each SIR model. There are several SIR models such as the Kermack-McKendrick, SIRS, and SI models that are designed for specific diseases. Understanding the parameters of these models will assist us in maximizing their accuracy. For example, there is no explicit formula …

The Game Of Life On The Hyperbolic Plane, Yuncong Gu May 2020

The Game Of Life On The Hyperbolic Plane, Yuncong Gu

Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)

In this paper, we work on the Game of Life on the hyperbolic plane. We are interested in different tessellations on the hyperbolic plane and different Game of Life rules. First, we show the exponential growth of polygons on the pentagon tessellation. Moreover, we find that the Group of 3 can keep the boundary of a set not getting smaller. We generalize the existence of still lifes by computer simulations. Also, we will prove some propositions of still lifes and cycles. There exists a still life under rules B1, B2, and S3.

Quantitative Analysis Of A Stochastic Seitr Epidemic Model With Multiple Stages Of Infection And Treatment, Olusegun M. Otunuga, Mobolaji O. Ogunsolu Jan 2020

Quantitative Analysis Of A Stochastic Seitr Epidemic Model With Multiple Stages Of Infection And Treatment, Olusegun M. Otunuga, Mobolaji O. Ogunsolu

Mathematics Faculty Research

We present a mathematical analysis of the transmission of certain diseases using a stochastic susceptible-exposed-infectious-treated-recovered (SEITR) model with multiple stages of infection and treatment and explore the effects of treatments and external fluctuations in the transmission, treatment and recovery rates. We assume external fluctuations are caused by variability in the number of contacts between infected and susceptible individuals. It is shown that the expected number of secondary infections produced (in the absence of noise) reduces as treatment is introduced into the population. By defining RT,n and ℛT,n as the basic deterministic and stochastic reproduction …

The Direct Scattering Map For The Intermediate Long Wave Equation, Joel Klipfel Jan 2020

The Direct Scattering Map For The Intermediate Long Wave Equation, Joel Klipfel

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

In the early 1980's, Kodama, Ablowitz and Satsuma, together with Santini, Ablowitz and Fokas, developed the formal inverse scattering theory of the Intermediate Long Wave (ILW) equation and explored its connections with the Benjamin-Ono (BO) and KdV equations. The ILW equation\begin{align*} u_t + \frac{1}{\delta} u_x + 2 u u_x + Tu_{xx} = 0, \end{align*} models the behavior of long internal gravitational waves in stratified fluids of depth $0< \delta < \infty$, where $T$ is a singular operator which depends on the depth $\delta$. In the limit $\delta \to 0$, the ILW reduces to the Korteweg de Vries (KdV) equation, and in the limit $\delta \to \infty$, the ILW (at least formally) reduces to the Benjamin-Ono (BO) equation.

While the KdV equation is very well understood, a rigorous analysis of inverse scattering for the ILW equation remains to be accomplished. There is currently no rigorous proof that the Inverse Scattering …

An Introduction To Shape Dynamics, Patrick R. Kerrigan Nov 2019

An Introduction To Shape Dynamics, Patrick R. Kerrigan

Physics

Shape Dynamics (SD) is a new fundamental framework of physics which seeks to remove any non-relational notions from its methodology. importantly it does away with a background space-time and replaces it with a conceptual framework meant to reflect direct observables and recognize how measurements are taken. It is a theory of pure relationalism, and is based on different first principles then General Relativity (GR). This paper investigates how SD assertions affect dynamics of the three body problem, then outlines the shape reduction framework in a general setting.

Fluids In Music: The Mathematics Of Pan’S Flutes, Bogdan Nita, Sajan Ramanathan

Department of Mathematics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

We discuss the mathematics behind the Pan’s flute. We analyze how the sound is created, the relationship between the notes that the pipes produce, their frequencies and the length of the pipes. We find an equation which models the curve that appears at the bottom of any Pan’s flute due to the different pipe lengths.

Controllability And Observability Of Linear Nabla Discrete Fractional Systems, Tilekbek Zhoroev Oct 2019

Controllability And Observability Of Linear Nabla Discrete Fractional Systems, Tilekbek Zhoroev

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The main purpose of this thesis to examine the controllability and observability of the linear discrete fractional systems. First we introduce the problem and continue with the review of some basic definitions and concepts of fractional calculus which are widely used to develop the theory of this subject. In Chapter 3, we give the unique solution of the fractional difference equation involving the Riemann-Liouville operator of real order between zero and one. Additionally we study the sequential fractional difference equations and describe the way to obtain the state-space repre- sentation of the sequential fractional difference equations. In Chapter 4, we …

Dynamics Of The Family Lambda Tan Z^2, Santanu Nandi Sep 2019

Dynamics Of The Family Lambda Tan Z^2, Santanu Nandi

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

We prove some topological properties of the dynamical plane ($z$-plane) and a combinatorial structure of the parameter plane of a holomorphic family of meromorphic maps $\lambda \tan z^2$. In the dynamical plane, we prove that there is no Herman ring and the Julia set is a Cantor set for the map when the parameter is in the central capture component. Julia set is connected for the maps when the parameters are in other hyperbolic components. In the parameter plane, I prove that the capture components are simply connected and there are always four hyperbolic shell components attached to a virtual …

The Long-Run Effects Of Tropical Cyclones On Infant Mortality, Isabel Miranda May 2019

The Long-Run Effects Of Tropical Cyclones On Infant Mortality, Isabel Miranda

Master's Theses

In the United States alone, each tropical cyclone causes an average of $14.6 billion worth of damages. In addition to the destruction of physical infrastructure, natural disasters also negatively impact human capital formation. These losses are often more difficult to observe, and therefore, are over looked when quantifying the true costs of natural disasters. One particular effect is an increase in infant mortality rates, an important indicator of a country’s general socioeconomic level. This paper utilizes a model created by Anttila-Hughes and Hsiang, that takes advantage of annual variation in tropical cyclones using annual spatial average maximum wind speeds and …

Periodicity And Invertibility Of Lattice Gas Cellular Automata, Jiawen Wang May 2019

Periodicity And Invertibility Of Lattice Gas Cellular Automata, Jiawen Wang

Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)

A cellular automaton is a type of mathematical system that models the behavior of a set of cells with discrete values in progressing time steps. The often complicated behaviors of cellular automata are studied in computer science, mathematics, biology, and other science related fields. Lattice gas cellular automata are used to simulate the movements of particles. This thesis aims to discuss the properties of lattice gas models, including periodicity and invertibility, and to examine their accuracy in reflecting the physics of particles in real life. Analysis of elementary cellular automata is presented to introduce the concept of cellular automata and …
