In this dissertation we develop a fractional difference calculus for functions on a discrete domain. We start by showing that the Taylor monomials, which play a role analagous to that of the power functions in ordinary differential calculus, can be expressed in terms of a family of polynomials which I will refer to as the Pochhammer polynomials. These important functions, the Taylor monomials, were previously described by other scholars primarily in terms of the gamma function. With only this description it is challenging to understand their properties. Describing the Taylor monomials in terms of the Pochhammer polynomials has made it …

We are interested in solving Liouville-type problems to explore constancy properties for maps or differential forms on Riemannian manifolds. Geometric structures on manifolds, the existence of constancy properties for maps or differential forms, and energy growth for maps or differential forms are intertwined. In this article, we concentrate on discovery of solutions to Liouville-type problems where manifolds are Euclidean spaces (i.e. flat Riemannian manifolds) and maps become real-valued functions. We investigate masked financial instability caused by wealth inequality. When an economic sector is decomposed into two subsectors that possess a severe wealth inequality, the sector in entirety can look financially stable while the two subsectors possess extreme financially instabilities of opposite nature, one from excessive equity, the other from lack thereof. The unstable subsector can result in further financial distress and even trigger a financial crisis. The market instability indicator, an early warning system derived from dynamical systems applied to agent-based models, is used to analyze the subsectoral financial instabilities. We study an iterative process to accelerate the successive approximations method in a monotonous convergence framework. It consists in interrupting the sequence of the successive approximations method produced at the kth iteration and substituting it by a combination of the element of the sequence produced at the iterate k + 1 and an extrapolation vector. The latter uses a parameter which can be calculated mathematically. We illustrate numerically this process by studying a freeboundary problems class.

In this paper, we study a generalized variational inclusion problem involving difference of monotone operators in Hilbert spaces. We established equivalence between the generalized variational inclusion problem and a fixed point problem. We establish an Ishikawa type iterative algorithm for solving a generalized variational inclusion problem involving difference of monotone operators, which is more general than Mann-type iterative algorithm. An existence result as well as a convergence result are proved separately. The problem of this paper is more general than many existing problems in the literature. In this paper, we consider unified classes PH (m, A,B) H and QH (m, A,B) H of multivalent harmonic functions F = H +G∈H(m) . Some hypergeometric inequalities for the functions of the class H(m) defined by generalized hypergeometric functions to be in these unified classes and its sub classes TPH (m, A,B) H and TQH (m, A,B) H , respectively, are obtained. Results, involving some integral operators are also given. Further, some special cases of the results are mentioned.

In this paper, utilizing convex functions, we first establish new refinements of Hermite- Hadamard-Fejer type inequalities via Riemann-Liouville fractional integral operators. A generalized refinements of Hermite-Hadamard-Fejer type inequalities for fractional integral operators with exponential kernel is also obtained. The results given in this paper would provide extensions of those presented in earlier studies.

The present study specifically examines what would happen to the U.S. population if we were to maintain the current birth and survival rates into the future. We study the Cauchy problem for the advection-diffusion equation when the diffusive parameter is vanishingly small. We consider two cases - when the underlying flow is a shear flow, and when the underlying flow is generated by a Hamiltonian. For the former, we examine the problem on a bounded domain in two spatial variables with Dirichlet boundary conditions. After quantizing the system via the Fourier transform in the first spatial variable, we establish the enhanced-dissipation effect for each mode. In this thesis we study the intrinsic geometry of graphs via the constants that appear in discretized partial differential equations associated to those graphs. By studying the behavior of a discretized version of Bochner's inequality for smooth manifolds at the cone point for a cone over the set of vertices of a graph, a lower bound for the internal energy of the underlying graph is obtained. This gives a new lower bound for the size of the first non-trivial eigenvalue of the graph Laplacian in terms of the curvature constant that appears at the cone point and the size of …

In 1966, Arnold showed that the Euler equation for an ideal fluid can arise as the geodesic flow on the group of volume preserving diffeomorphisms with respect to the right invariant kinetic energy metric. This geometric interpretation was rigorously established by Ebin and Marsden in 1970 using infinite dimensional Riemannian geometry and Sobolev space techniques. Many other nonlinear evolution PDEs in mathematical physics turned out to fit in this universal approach, and this opened a vast research on the geometry and analysis of the Euler-Arnold equations, i.e., geodesic equations on a Lie group endowed with one-sided invariant metrics. The classical Laplace operator is a vital tool in modeling many physical behaviors, such as elasticity, diffusion and fluid flow. Incorporated in the Laplace operator is the requirement of twice differentiability, which implies continuity that many physical processes lack. In this thesis we introduce a new nonlocal Laplace-type operator, that is capable of dealing with strong discontinuities. Motivated by the state-based peridynamic framework, this new nonlocal Laplacian exhibits double nonlocality through the use of iterated integral operators. Optimal control is a control method which provides inputs that minimize a performance index subject to state or input constraints [58]. The existing solutions for finding the exact optimal control solution such as Pontryagin’s minimum principle and dynamic programming suffer from curse of dimensionality in high order dynamical systems. One remedy for this problem is finding near optimal solution instead of the exact optimal solution to avoid curse of dimensionality [31]. Mobile phones and other devices with embedded sensors are becoming increasingly ubiquitous. Audio and motion sensor data may be able to detect information that we did not think possible. Some researchers have created models that can predict computer keyboard typing from a nearby mobile device; however, certain limitations to their experiment setup and methods compelled us to be skeptical of the models’ realistic prediction capability. We investigate the possibility of understanding natural keyboard typing from mobile phones by performing a well-designed data collection experiment that encourages natural typing and interactions. The concept of single valued neutrosophic graphs (SVNGs) generalizes the concept of fuzzy graphs and intuitionistic fuzzy graphs. The purpose of this research paper is to define different types of strong degrees in SVNGs and introduce novel concepts, such as the vertex truth-membership, vertex indeterminacy-membership and falsity-membership sequence in SVNG with proof and numerical illustrations.

Nonlinear differential equations arise as mathematical models of various phenomena. Here, various methods of solving and approximating linear and nonlinear differential equations are examined. Since analytical solutions to nonlinear differential equations are rare and difficult to determine, approximation methods have been developed. Initial and boundary value problems will be discussed. Several linear and nonlinear techniques to approximate or solve the linear or nonlinear problems are demonstrated. In this dissertation we prove new results on the existence of infinitely many solutions to nonlinear partial differential equations that are perturbed from symmetry. We consider an eigenvalue problem with a mixed boundary condition, where a second-order differential operator is given in divergence form and satisfies a uniform ellipticity condition. We show that if a function u in the Sobolev space W1,pD is a weak solution to the eigenvalue problem, then u also belongs to W1,pD for some p>2. To do so, we show a reverse Hölder inequality for the gradient of u. The decomposition of the boundary is assumed to be such that we get both Poincaré and Sobolev-type inequalities up to the boundary.
