Differentiating The Impossible: Feynman's Trick In Applications Of Modern Physics, Yaohua Zhao
Differentiating The Impossible: Feynman's Trick In Applications Of Modern Physics, Yaohua Zhao
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
We discuss Feynman’s method of differentiating with respect to a parameter inside an integral and explore its significance on selective topics of modern physics. This powerful technique allows us to integrate functions that may seem impossible. Depending on the underlying parameters, the Feynman method becomes a unifying framework that connects mathematical concepts to many parameter-dependent equations in modern physics. In statistical mechanics, this appears directly in the partition function, where derivatives with respect to temperature-related parameters yield thermodynamic quantities such as internal energy and heat capacity; this demonstrates how parameter dependence gives rise to macroscopic behaviors observable at a larger …

Engineering Path Trajectories With Gravitational Fields, Eliane Dean, Aidan Hart, Isabel Noot, Nathan Browning, Valeria Villazon Fito
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
This project explores how vector calculus concepts play a role in aerospace engineering though spacecraft trajectory design. In particular, the notion of vector fields is used to model the gravitational force, whose work done is expressed through line integrals. By taking the curl of the gravitational field and showing it is zero, the field is recognised as conservative, implying that the work done by gravity is path independent. This property is conceptually linked to gravitational potential energy and the principle of energy conservation. The results are then applied to spacecraft motion, where engineers use energy-base methods to determine efficient trajectories …

Visualizing The Invisible: Simulating Electromagnetic Field In 3d Space With Matlab, Aashman Gupta, Eliane Dean, Riley Esperanca, Hailey Grabinski, Jacob Summerhays, Ameya Sute
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
Electromagnetic field behaviours in free space are defined by Maxwell’s Equations, which couple the temporal and spatial variations of electric and magnetic fields through partial derivatives. These derivatives quantify the rate of change of each field’s vector component with respect to position and time in a 3D lattice, forming the basis for numerical field analysis. This research will develop a mathematical and computational framework using multivariable calculus to model, simulate, and visualize electromagnetic wave propagation in free space using MATLAB. Gradient, divergence, and curl operations are implemented to compute local field variations and energy transfer. The resulting data are used …
Momentum Space Algorithm For Electronic Structure Of Double-Incommensurate Trilayer Graphene, Kenneth Silver Beard
Momentum Space Algorithm For Electronic Structure Of Double-Incommensurate Trilayer Graphene, Kenneth Silver Beard
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Numerical algorithms for computing the electronic structure of incommensurate 2D-materials using ab initio models are critical for predicting material properties and guiding experiments. For bilayers, momentum space and continuum models have been introduced to approximate observables of ab initio tight-binding models using a momentum description, despite the lack of periodicity in the tight-binding model required for Bloch theory. A similar structure has been introduced for double-incommensurate trilayers using a continuum model, where the three lattices are mutually incommensurate. However, this description leads to a four-dimensional lattice space, and numerical convergence of the density of states has been observed to be …

The main goal of this paper is to gain new results in stochastics by drawing on, and combining, different areas that are normally not considered to be related. Thus, in this paper we extend the previous class of Gaussian-like functions ML which will allow for future generalized stochastic processes in infinite dimensional analysis. We show that an approach similar to the one by the classical Bochner-Minlos theorem for the white-noise case can be achieved by using Gaussian-like functions belonging to a large family -the MLr classes (0 < r ≤∞). We show how Schoenberg’s theorem for positive definite functions on a Hilbert space allows to go beyond the classical setting of Bochner-Milnos theorem. Furthermore, we show that the application of the Rohlin’s disintegration theorem allows for a decomposition of the associated probability measures , see Theorems 3.2 and 4.3. We end this paper with several important examples of functions in these classes MLr and provide some interesting counterexamples, e.g. Theorem 7.4, to get a …
Empirical Validation Of Einstein’S Coefficient For The Deflection Of Light Due To Gravitational Forces, Alexandra R. Mcdowell
Empirical Validation Of Einstein’S Coefficient For The Deflection Of Light Due To Gravitational Forces, Alexandra R. Mcdowell
Honors College Theses
Einstein’s formula to calculate the deflection angle of light through space as it interacts with gravity was introduced in his 1916 publication on general relativity. This was not a new idea, but his equation was, and it was correct. Just 3 years after this publication, it was empirically validated by Sir Arthur Eddington and Sir Frank Dyson. Since that experiment in 1919, at least seven others have been performed that also gave definitive answers in support of Einstein’s deflection constant of 1.751 arcseconds. The two most recent ones made groundbreaking contributions to this effort. The 2017 eclipse showed reproducible results …
A Mathematical Frameworks For Singular, Nonlinear Phenomena: Applications To Nematocyst Firing And Inhomogeneous Nls With Coulomb Potential, Abdulrahman Alharbi
A Mathematical Frameworks For Singular, Nonlinear Phenomena: Applications To Nematocyst Firing And Inhomogeneous Nls With Coulomb Potential, Abdulrahman Alharbi
Theses and Dissertations
Nematocysts are specialized cellular organelles found in all cnidarians, including corals and jellyfish, as well as in some single-celled protists such as dinoflagellates. These organelles display remarkable diversity in morphology and function, playing roles in prey capture and defense. The firing of a nematocyst is one of the fastest accelerations in nature, yet the underlying physical mechanisms remain not fully understood. In this work, we address key questions: how sufficient force is generated to overcome the fluid boundary layer, whether fluid–structure interaction models can reproduce observed dynamics, and what mechanisms trigger discharge.

An Analysis On The Time Effectiveness Of Speeding While Driving A Vehicle, Joy Skaggs
An Analysis On The Time Effectiveness Of Speeding While Driving A Vehicle, Joy Skaggs
ATU Scholars Symposium
Speeding is responsible for roughly a third of all crashes, often coming at a deadly cost. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports many negative consequences, such as a greater likelihood of loss of vehicle control, reduced protection equipment effectiveness, increased stopping distance, crash severity, and fuel consumption (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, n.d.). Yet despite these costs, drivers continue to speed. In fact, in our fast paced world, speeding is so normalized that it’s uncommon to encounter a driver following the speed limit. Hawaiian psychology professor Leon James explains it best: people have twisted their definitions of speeding to …
Analyticity And Supershift With Regular Sampling, Fabrizio Colombo, Irene Sabadini, Daniele C. Struppa, Alain Yger
Analyticity And Supershift With Regular Sampling, Fabrizio Colombo, Irene Sabadini, Daniele C. Struppa, Alain Yger
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
The notion of supershift (in itself a generalization of the notion of superoscillation arising in quantum mechanics) expresses the fact that the sampling of a function in an interval allows to compute the values of the function far from the interval. In this paper, we study the relation between supershift and real analyticity. We use a classical result due to Serge Bernstein to show that real analyticity for a complex-valued function implies a strong form of supershift. On the other hand, we use a parametric version of a result by Leonid Kantorovitch to show that the converse is not true. …
0th Order Solutions Of The Wavefunctions For The Quantum Elliptical Box And Microstrip Antenna, Nishtha Tikalal
0th Order Solutions Of The Wavefunctions For The Quantum Elliptical Box And Microstrip Antenna, Nishtha Tikalal
Honors Undergraduate Theses
For a quantum particle confined to a two-dimensional elliptical box or electromagnetic wave in a microstrip antenna, geometrical and boundary condition interplay result in a spectrum of spatial patterns. Due to the asymmetrical nature of the ellipse, we are faced with continuous symmetry reductions, leaving both degenerate and nondegenerate solutions. Here, we present a complete derivation of an analytical solution and visualizations of the fundamental wavefunctions for both Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions respectively corresponding to the quantum elliptical box and the elliptical microstrip antenna.
We demonstrate that the eigenmodes, governed by eccentricity, directly correspond to the modal field distributions …
Pt-Symmetry And Eigenmodes, Tamara Gratcheva
Pt-Symmetry And Eigenmodes, Tamara Gratcheva
University Honors Theses
Spectra of systems with balanced gain and loss, described by Hamiltonians with parity and time-reversal (PT) symmetry is a rich area of research. This work studies by means of numerical techniques, how eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of a Schrodinger operator change as a gain-loss parameter changes. Two cases on a disk with zero boundary conditions are considered. In the first case, within the enclosing disk, we place a parity (P) symmetric configuration of three smaller disks containing gain and loss media, which does not have PT-symmetry. In the second case, we study a PT-symmetric configuration …

Aspects Of Stochastic Geometric Mechanics In Molecular Biophysics, David Frost
All Dissertations
In confocal single-molecule FRET experiments, the joint distribution of FRET efficiency and donor lifetime distribution can reveal underlying molecular conformational dynamics via deviation from their theoretical Forster relationship. This shift is referred to as a dynamic shift. In this study, we investigate the influence of the free energy landscape in protein conformational dynamics on the dynamic shift by simulation of the associated continuum reaction coordinate Langevin dynamics, yielding a deeper understanding of the dynamic and structural information in the joint FRET efficiency and donor lifetime distribution. We develop novel Langevin models for the dye linker dynamics, including rotational dynamics, based …

Using Deep Neural Networks To Classify Astronomical Images, Andrew D. Macpherson
Honors Projects
As the quantity of astronomical data available continues to exceed the resources available for analysis, recent advances in artificial intelligence encourage the development of automated classification tools. This paper lays out a framework for constructing a deep neural network capable of classifying individual astronomical images by describing techniques to extract and label these objects from large images.

A New Model For Predicting The Drag And Lift Forces Of Turbulent Newtonian Flow On Arbitrarily Shaped Shells On The Seafloor, Carley R. Walker, James V. Lambers, Julian Simeonov
Dissertations
Currently, all forecasts of currents, waves, and seafloor evolution are limited by a lack of fundamental knowledge and the parameterization of small-scale processes at the seafloor-ocean interface. Commonly used Euler-Lagrange models for sediment transport require parameterizations of the drag and lift forces acting on the particles. However, current parameterizations for these forces only work for spherical particles. In this dissertation we propose a new method for predicting the drag and lift forces on arbitrarily shaped objects at arbitrary orientations with respect to the direction of flow that will ultimately provide models for predicting the sediment sorting processes that lead to …
Recent Analytic Development Of The Dynamic Q-Tensor Theory For Nematic Liquid Crystals, Xiang Xu
Recent Analytic Development Of The Dynamic Q-Tensor Theory For Nematic Liquid Crystals, Xiang Xu
Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications
Liquid crystals are a typical type of soft matter that are intermediate between conventional crystalline solids and isotropic fluids. The nematic phase is the simplest liquid crystal phase, and has been studied the most in the mathematical community. There are various continuum models to describe liquid crystals of nematic type, and Q-tensor theory is one among them. The aim of this paper is to give a brief review of recent PDE results regarding the Q-tensor theory in dynamic configurations.
Zeta Function Regularization And Its Relationship To Number Theory, Stephen Wang
Zeta Function Regularization And Its Relationship To Number Theory, Stephen Wang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
While the "path integral" formulation of quantum mechanics is both highly intuitive and far reaching, the path integrals themselves often fail to converge in the usual sense. Richard Feynman developed regularization as a solution, such that regularized path integrals could be calculated and analyzed within a strictly physics context. Over the past 50 years, mathematicians and physicists have retroactively introduced schemes for achieving mathematical rigor in the study and application of regularized path integrals. One such scheme was introduced in 2007 by the mathematicians Klaus Kirsten and Paul Loya. In this thesis, we reproduce the Kirsten and Loya approach to …

Optical Soliton Perturbation With Quadratic-Cubic Nonlinearity, Asma Mir
Student Works (2020-2029)
Solitons can be defined as wave packets that can travel undistorted across long distances even transcontinental and transoceanic. They serve as modern telecommunication means through cables and optical fibers for fast Internet activities. To maintain high-fidelity and time sensitive transmission, optical pulses manage the efficient flow of data. From the last few years, Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation (NLSE) has been a great attraction of research activities across the globe. The governing model is the Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation (NLSE). From a mathematical standpoint, NLSE is a nonlinear partial differential equation (PDE) that has been studied in a variety of other areas of …
A Study Of The Design Of Adaptive Camber Winglets, Justin J. Rosescu
A Study Of The Design Of Adaptive Camber Winglets, Justin J. Rosescu
Master's Theses
A numerical study was conducted to determine the effect of changing the camber of a winglet on the efficiency of a wing in two distinct flight conditions. Camber was altered via a simple plain flap deflection in the winglet, which produced a constant camber change over the winglet span. Hinge points were located at 20%, 50% and 80% of the chord and the trailing edge was deflected between -5° and +5°. Analysis was performed using a combination of three-dimensional vortex lattice method and two-dimensional panel method to obtain aerodynamic forces for the entire wing, based on different winglet camber configurations. …
On Quantum Effects Of Vector Potentials And Generalizations Of Functional Analysis, Ismael L. Paiva
On Quantum Effects Of Vector Potentials And Generalizations Of Functional Analysis, Ismael L. Paiva
Computational and Data Sciences (PhD) Dissertations
This is a dissertation in two parts. In the first one, the Aharonov-Bohm effect is investigated. It is shown that solenoids (or flux lines) can be seen as barriers for quantum charges. In particular, a charge can be trapped in a sector of a long cavity by two flux lines. Also, grids of flux lines can approximate the force associated with continuous two-dimensional distributions of magnetic fields. More, if it is assumed that the lines can be as close to each other as desirable, it is explained how the classical magnetic force can emerge from the Aharonov-Bohm effect. Continuing, the …

Application Of Reduced Differential Transform Method For Solving Two-Dimensional Volterra Integral Equations Of The Second Kind, Seyyedeh R. Moosavi Noori, Nasir Taghizadeh
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, we propose new theorems of the reduced differential transform method (RDTM) for solving a class of two-dimensional linear and nonlinear Volterra integral equations (VIEs) of the second kind. The advantage of this method is its simplicity in using. It solves the equations straightforward and directly without using perturbation, Adomian’s polynomial, linearization or any other transformation and gives the solution as convergent power series with simply determinable components. Also, six examples and numerical results are provided so as to validate the reliability and efficiency of the method.
Generalized Bagley-Torvik Equation And Fractional Oscillators, Mark Naber, Lucas Lymburner
Generalized Bagley-Torvik Equation And Fractional Oscillators, Mark Naber, Lucas Lymburner
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper the Bagley-Torvik Equation is considered with the order of the damping term allowed to range between one and two. The solution is found to be representable as a convolution of trigonometric and exponential functions with the driving force. The properties of the effective decay rate and the oscillation frequency with respect to the order of the fractional damping are also studied. It is found that the effective decay rate and oscillation frequency have a complex dependency on the order of the derivative of the damping term and exhibit properties one might expect of a thermodynamic Equation of …

Transient Thermal Stresses Due To Axisymmetric Heat Supply In A Semi-Infinite Thick Circular Plate, S. D. Warbhe, K. C. Deshmukh
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
The present paper deals with the determination of thermal stresses in a semi-infinite thick circular plate of a finite length and infinite extent subjected to an axisymmetric heat supply. A thick circular plate is considered having constant initial temperature and arbitrary heat flux is applied on the upper and lower face. The governing heat conduction equation has been solved by using integral transform technique. The results are obtained in terms of Bessel’s function. The thermoelastic behavior has been computed numerically and illustrated graphically for a steel plate.
Unbounded Derivations Of C*-Algebras And The Heisenberg Commutation Relation, Lara M. Ismert
Unbounded Derivations Of C*-Algebras And The Heisenberg Commutation Relation, Lara M. Ismert
Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This dissertation investigates the properties of unbounded derivations on C*-algebras, namely the density of their analytic vectors and a property we refer to as "kernel stabilization." We focus on a weakly-defined derivation δD which formalizes commutators involving unbounded self-adjoint operators on a Hilbert space. These commutators naturally arise in quantum mechanics, as we briefly describe in the introduction.
A first application of kernel stabilization for δD shows that a large class of abstract derivations on unbounded C*-algebras, defined by O. Bratteli and D. Robinson, also have kernel stabilization. A second application of kernel stabilization provides a sufficient condition …

Conformable Derivative Operator In Modelling Neuronal Dynamics, Mehmet Yavuz, Burcu Yaşkıran
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
This study presents two new numerical techniques for solving time-fractional one-dimensional cable differential equation (FCE) modeling neuronal dynamics. We have introduced new formulations for the approximate-analytical solution of the FCE by using modified homotopy perturbation method defined with conformable operator (MHPMC) and reduced differential transform method defined with conformable operator (RDTMC), which are derived the solutions for linear-nonlinear fractional PDEs. In order to show the efficiencies of these methods, we have compared the numerical and exact solutions of fractional neuronal dynamics problem. Moreover, we have declared that the proposed models are very accurate and illustrative techniques in determining to approximate-analytical …
The Advection-Diffusion Equation And The Enhanced Dissipation Effect For Flows Generated By Hamiltonians, Michael Kumaresan
The Advection-Diffusion Equation And The Enhanced Dissipation Effect For Flows Generated By Hamiltonians, Michael Kumaresan
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
We study the Cauchy problem for the advection-diffusion equation when the diffusive parameter is vanishingly small. We consider two cases - when the underlying flow is a shear flow, and when the underlying flow is generated by a Hamiltonian. For the former, we examine the problem on a bounded domain in two spatial variables with Dirichlet boundary conditions. After quantizing the system via the Fourier transform in the first spatial variable, we establish the enhanced-dissipation effect for each mode. For the latter, we allow for non-degenerate critical points and represent the orbits by points on a Reeb graph, with vertices …
Numerical Simulation For A Rising Bubble Interacting With A Solid Wall: Impact, Bounce, And Thin Film Dynamics, Changjuan Zhang, Jie Li, Li-Shi Luo, Tiezheng Qian
Numerical Simulation For A Rising Bubble Interacting With A Solid Wall: Impact, Bounce, And Thin Film Dynamics, Changjuan Zhang, Jie Li, Li-Shi Luo, Tiezheng Qian
Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications
Using an arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian method on an adaptive moving unstructured mesh, we carry out numerical simulations for a rising bubble interacting with a solid wall. Driven by the buoyancy force, the axisymmetric bubble rises in a viscous liquid toward a horizontal wall, with impact on and possible bounce from the wall. First, our simulation is quantitatively validated through a detailed comparison between numerical results and experimental data. We then investigate the bubble dynamics which exhibits four different behaviors depending on the competition among the inertial, viscous, gravitational, and capillary forces. A phase diagram for bubble dynamics has been produced using …

Fractional Order Thermoelastic Deflection In A Thin Circular Plate, J. J. Tripathi, S. D. Warbhe, K. C. Deshmukh, J. Verma
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this work, a quasi-static uncoupled theory of thermoelasticity based on time fractional heat conduction equation is used to model a thin circular plate, whose lower surface is maintained at zero temperature whereas the upper surface is insulated. The edge of the circular plate is fixed and clamped. Integral transform technique is used to derive the analytical solutions in the physi-cal domain. The numerical results for temperature distributions and thermal deflection are com-puted and represented graphically for Copper material.

Thermoelastic Analysis Of A Nonhomogeneous Hollow Cylinder With Internal Heat Generation, V. R. Manthena, N. K. Lamba, G. D. Kedar
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In the present paper, we have determined the heat conduction and thermal stresses of a hollow cylinder with inhomogeneous material properties and internal heat generation. All the material properties except Poisson’s ratio and density are assumed to be given by a simple power law in axial direction. We have obtained the solution of the two dimensional heat conduction equation in the transient state in terms of Bessel’s and trigonometric functions. The influence of inhomogeneity on the thermal and mechanical behavior is examined. Numerical computations are carried out for both homogeneous and nonhomogeneous cylinders and are represented graphically.
Electromagnetic Resonant Scattering In Layered Media With Fabrication Errors, Emily Anne Mchenry
Electromagnetic Resonant Scattering In Layered Media With Fabrication Errors, Emily Anne Mchenry
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In certain layered electromagnetic media, one can construct a waveguide that supports a harmonic electromagnetic field at a frequency that is embedded in the continuous spectrum. When the structure is perturbed, this embedded eigenvalue moves into the complex plane and becomes a “complex resonance” frequency. The real and imaginary parts of this complex frequency have physical meaning. They lie behind anomalous scattering behaviors known collectively as “Fano resonance”, and people are interested in tuning them to specific values in optical devices. The mathematics involves spectral theory and analytic perturbation theory and is well understood [16], at least on a theoretical …

Thermal Stress Analysis In A Functionally Graded Hollow Elliptic-Cylinder Subjected To Uniform Temperature Distribution, V. R. Manthena, N. K. Lamba, G. D. Kedar
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, an analytical method of a thermoelastic problem for a medium with functionally graded material properties is developed in a theoretical manner for the elliptic-cylindrical coordinate system under the assumption that the material properties except for Poisson’s ratio and density are assumed to vary arbitrarily with the exponential law in the radial direction. An attempt has been made to reconsider the fundamental system of equations for functionally graded solids in a two-dimensional state under thermal and mechanical loads. The general solution of displacement formulation is obtained by the introduction of appropriate transformation and carried out the analysis by …
