Lebesgue’S Theory Of Integration: An Introduction To Modern Integration Theory, Nathanael C. Krug
Lebesgue’S Theory Of Integration: An Introduction To Modern Integration Theory, Nathanael C. Krug
Senior Honors Theses
The depth and richness of integration theory far surpasses the introductory material presented in an elementary calculus classroom. The work of Bernhard Riemann and Henri Lebesgue demonstrates just a small sample of the richness of the field of analysis. In formulating and contrasting the Riemann and Lebesgue integrals, students can gain an enriched and well-rounded introduction to integration theory. This not only deepens understanding and love for previously learned material, but also enables further study within the fields of analysis and measure theory. An introductory primer to integration theory equips students with the tools needed to continue their exploration of …

The main goal of this paper is to gain new results in stochastics by drawing on, and combining, different areas that are normally not considered to be related. Thus, in this paper we extend the previous class of Gaussian-like functions ML which will allow for future generalized stochastic processes in infinite dimensional analysis. We show that an approach similar to the one by the classical Bochner-Minlos theorem for the white-noise case can be achieved by using Gaussian-like functions belonging to a large family -the MLr classes (0 < r ≤∞). We show how Schoenberg’s theorem for positive definite functions on a Hilbert space allows to go beyond the classical setting of Bochner-Milnos theorem. Furthermore, we show that the application of the Rohlin’s disintegration theorem allows for a decomposition of the associated probability measures , see Theorems 3.2 and 4.3. We end this paper with several important examples of functions in these classes MLr and provide some interesting counterexamples, e.g. Theorem 7.4, to get a …

Norm-Variation Of Triple Ergodic Averages For Commuting Transformations, Polona Durcik, Lenka Slavíková, Christoph Thiele
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
We prove an r-variation estimate, r>4, in the norm for ergodic averages with respect to three commuting transformations. It is not known whether such estimates hold for all r≥2 as in the analogous cases for one or two commuting transformations, or whether such estimates hold for any r< ∞ for more than three commuting transformations.

Matrices Induced By Scaled Hypercomplex Numbers Over The Real Field R, Daniel Alpay, Ilwoo Choo
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
In this paper, we construct, and study a certain type of definite, or indefinite inner product spaces over the real field R, induced by the scaled hypercomplex numbers Ht for a fixed scale t ∈ R, and some bounded operators acting on such vector spaces. In particular, we are interested in the vector spaces HNt consisting of all N-tuples of scaled hypercomplex numbers of Ht, and the (N x N)-matrices acting on HNt whose entries are from Ht, i.e., Ht-matrices, for all N ∈ N. For an arbitrarily fixed …

In this paper, we study certain sectional structures of the t-scaled hypercomplex numbers Ht for a scale t ∈ R, including the quaternions H-1, and the split quaternions H1. For a fixed scale t ∈ R, by defining the collection St of certain pureimaginary t-scaled hypercomplex number in Ht , we sectionize Ht from the imaginaries of St. We concentrate on a section SHIt for an arbitrarily fixed imaginary It ∈ St , called the t-scaled section for It. Differentiation theory on the …
Traffic Prediction For Research And Education Networks: Anomaly-Aware Deep Learning And Benchmarking, Mohammad Arafath Uddin Shariff
Traffic Prediction For Research And Education Networks: Anomaly-Aware Deep Learning And Benchmarking, Mohammad Arafath Uddin Shariff
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Research and Education Networks (RENs) and High-Performance Computing (HPC) environments are critical infrastructures for modern scientific discovery, demanding sustained high-throughput and low-latency data transfers. Unlike commercial networks, RENs exhibit unique traffic characteristics, including predominant “elephant flows,” inherent burstiness, and complex temporal-spatial dynamics often decoupled from human-driven cycles. Traditional traffic forecasting methods, tailored for commercial Wide Area Networks (WANs), consistently fail to capture these distinct REN dynamics, leading to inefficient resource management and potential impediments to scientific progress.
This thesis addresses this critical gap by developing and validating a robust, scalable, and anomaly-aware traffic forecasting framework specifically tailored for REN/HPC networks. …

Analyticity, Superoscillations And Supershifts In Several Variables, Fabrizio Colombo, Irene Sabadini, Daniele C. Struppa, Alain Yger
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
Superoscillations have roots in various scientific disciplines, including optics, signal processing, radar theory, and quantum mechanics. This intriguing mathematical phenomenon permits specific functions to oscillate at a rate surpassing their highest Fourier component. A different way of thinking about superoscillations consists in realizing that it is possible to reproduce the exponential function far away from the origin by only knowing its value in a countable set of points near the origin. By using this perspective, one can extend the idea of superoscillations to functions that are not a sum of exponential functions, namely to the notion of supershift. The study …

Supershift Properties For Nonanalytic Signals, Fabrizio Colombo, Irene Sabadini, Daniele Carlo Struppa, Alain Yger
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
The phenomenon of superoscillations is of great interest in microscopy, antenna design, and material sciences. This phenomenon has been generalized and has given rise to the concept of supershift, which is a far reaching extension that applies to functions that may present discontinuous derivatives. From this perspective, this is a notion that might have significant applications. This paper will provide an up to date report on the complex connections between the concept of supershift and that of analyticity.

Analyticity And Supershift With Regular Sampling, Fabrizio Colombo, Irene Sabadini, Daniele C. Struppa, Alain Yger
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
The notion of supershift (in itself a generalization of the notion of superoscillation arising in quantum mechanics) expresses the fact that the sampling of a function in an interval allows to compute the values of the function far from the interval. In this paper, we study the relation between supershift and real analyticity. We use a classical result due to Serge Bernstein to show that real analyticity for a complex-valued function implies a strong form of supershift. On the other hand, we use a parametric version of a result by Leonid Kantorovitch to show that the converse is not true. …

Stochastic Bundles, New Classes Of Gaussian Processes And White Noise-Space Analysis Indexed By Measures, Daniel Alpay, Palle Jorgensen
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
Starting from a fixed measure space (X,F,μ), with μ a positive sigma-finite measure defined on the sigma-algebra F, we continue here our study of a generalization W(μ) of Brownian motion, and introduce a corresponding white-noise process. In detail, the generalized Brownian motion is a centered Gaussian process W(μ), indexed by the elements A in F of finite μ measure, and with covariance function μ(A ∩ B). The purpose of our present paper is to make precise and study the corresponding whitenoise process, i.e., a point-wise process which is indexed by X, and which arises …

Short-Time Fourier Transform And Superoscillations, Daniel Alpay, Antonino De Martino, Kamal Diki, Daniele C. Struppa
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
In this paper we investigate new results on the theory of superoscillations using time-frequency analysis tools and techniques such as the short-time Fourier transform (STFT) and the Zak transform. We start by studying how the short-time Fourier transform acts on superoscillation sequences. We then apply the supershift property to prove that the short-time Fourier transform preserves the superoscillatory behavior by taking the limit. It turns out that these computations lead to interesting connections with various features of time-frequency analysis such as Gabor spaces, Gabor kernels, Gabor frames, 2D-complex Hermite polynomials, and polyanalytic functions. We treat different cases depending on the …
Bi-Harmonic Maps' Existence And P-Balanced Energy And Connections To Harmonic Maps, Lina Wu
Bi-Harmonic Maps' Existence And P-Balanced Energy And Connections To Harmonic Maps, Lina Wu
Publications and Research
We discover a bi-harmonic map’ existence, its energy growth, and its connections to a harmonic map. First, we prove the existence of a nontrivial bi-harmonic map in a unit sphere. Second, we investigate the p-balanced energy growth of biharmonic maps. As the most important energy technical breakthroughs, we propose an innovative energy algorithm called p-balanced energy technique to break the constraints of the existing L^q-energy technique in detecting L^q-energy growth towards boundlessness. The disadvantage of the finite L^q -energy technique in the L ^q spaces is not effective in dealing with infinite L^q- energy in Non-L^q spaces. Third, we study …

On Axially Rational Regular Functions And Schur Analysis In The Clifford-Appell Setting, Daniel Alpay, Fabrizio Colombo, Antonino De Martino, Kamal Diki, Irene Sabadini
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
In this paper we start the study of Schur analysis for Cauchy–Fueter regular quaternionic-valued functions, i.e. null solutions of the Cauchy–Fueter operator in . The novelty of the approach developed in this paper is that we consider axially regular functions, i.e. functions spanned by the so-called Clifford-Appell polynomials. This type of functions arises naturally from two well-known extension results in hypercomplex analysis: the Fueter mapping theorem and the generalized Cauchy–Kovalevskaya (GCK) extension. These results allow one to obtain axially regular functions starting from analytic functions of one real or complex variable. Precisely, in the Fueter theorem two operators play a …
Abstract Measures On Totally Ordered Sets, Gregory Whitehurst
Abstract Measures On Totally Ordered Sets, Gregory Whitehurst
Mathematics Senior Capstone Papers
Two specific notions of integration were the motivation of this paper: Riemann-Stieltjes and Lebesgue-Stieltjes integration. The question that arose from these notions was the idea of generalization. How can Stieltjes integration be generalized to an arbitrary measure? The buildup to this question requires a beautiful combination of measure theory and order theory to deliver a measure on totally ordered sets that provide structure for a potential generalization. This paper shows that the set of chains in a totally ordered set is a σ-algebra and defines cumulative cardinality measure on (X, Σ) in an attempt to give insight on the structure …
A Cohomological Perspective To Nonlocal Operators, Nicholas White
A Cohomological Perspective To Nonlocal Operators, Nicholas White
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
Nonlocal models have experienced a large period of growth in recent years. In particular, nonlocal models centered around a finite horizon have been the subject of many novel results. In this work we consider three nonlocal operators defined via a finite horizon: a weighted averaging operator in one dimension, an averaging differential operator, and the truncated Riesz fractional gradient. We primarily explore the kernel of each of these operators when we restrict to open sets. We discuss how the topological structure of the domain can give insight into the behavior of these operators, and more specifically the structure of their …

Machine Learning Approaches For Cyberbullying Detection, Roland Fiagbe
Data Science and Data Mining
Cyberbullying refers to the act of bullying using electronic means and the internet. In recent years, this act has been identifed to be a major problem among young people and even adults. It can negatively impact one’s emotions and lead to adverse outcomes like depression, anxiety, harassment, and suicide, among others. This has led to the need to employ machine learning techniques to automatically detect cyberbullying and prevent them on various social media platforms. In this study, we want to analyze the combination of some Natural Language Processing (NLP) algorithms (such as Bag-of-Words and TFIDF) with some popular machine learning …

The General Theory Of Superoscillations And Supershifts In Several Variables, Fabrizio Colombo, Stefano Pinton, Irene Sabadini, Daniele C. Struppa
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
In this paper we describe a general method to generate superoscillatory functions of several variables starting from a superoscillating sequence of one variable. Our results are based on the study of suitable infinite order differential operators acting on holomorphic functions with growth conditions of exponential type. Additional constraints are required when dealing with infinite order differential operators whose symbol is a function that is holomorphic in some open set, but not necessarily entire. The results proved for superoscillating sequences in several variables are extended to sequences of supershifts in several variables.

Bayesian Optimization With Switching Cost: Regret Analysis And Lookahead Variants, Peng Liu, Haowei Wang, Wei Qiyu
Bayesian Optimization With Switching Cost: Regret Analysis And Lookahead Variants, Peng Liu, Haowei Wang, Wei Qiyu
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Bayesian Optimization (BO) has recently received increasing attention due to its efficiency in optimizing expensive-to-evaluate functions. For some practical problems, it is essential to consider the path-dependent switching cost between consecutive sampling locations given a total traveling budget. For example, when using a drone to locate cracks in a building wall or search for lost survivors in the wild, the search path needs to be efficiently planned given the limited battery power of the drone. Tackling such problems requires a careful cost-benefit analysis of candidate locations and balancing exploration and exploitation. In this work, we formulate such a problem as …

Using results from the theory of operators on a Hilbert space, we prove approximation results for matrix-valued holomorphic functions on the unit disc and the unit bidisc. The essential tools are the theory of unitary dilation of a contraction and the realization formula for functions in the unit ball of . We first prove a generalization of a result of Carathéodory. This generalization has many applications. A uniform approximation result for matrix-valued holomorphic functions which extend continuously to the unit circle is proved using the Potapov factorization. This generalizes a theorem due to Fisher. Approximation results are proved for matrix-valued …

For every β ∈ (0,∞), β ≠ 1, we prove that a positive measure subset A of the unit square contains a point (x0, y0) such that A nontrivially intersects curves y − y0 = a(x −x0)β for a whole interval I ⊆ (0,∞) of parameters a ∈ I . A classical Nikodym set counterexample prevents one to take β = 1, which is the case of straight lines. Moreover, for a planar set A of positive density, we show that the interval I can be arbitrarily large on the logarithmic scale. These results can …

Movie Recommender System Using Matrix Factorization, Roland Fiagbe
Data Science and Data Mining
Recommendation systems are a popular and beneficial field that can help people make informed decisions automatically. This technique assists users in selecting relevant information from an overwhelming amount of available data. When it comes to movie recommendations, two common methods are collaborative filtering, which compares similarities between users, and content-based filtering, which takes a user’s specific preferences into account. However, our study focuses on the collaborative filtering approach, specifically matrix factorization. Various similarity metrics are used to identify user similarities for recommendation purposes. Our project aims to predict movie ratings for unwatched movies using the MovieLens rating dataset. We developed …

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
The reason why I am interested in Formula One is that my friend showed me what Formula One was all about. It became interesting to see the action of the sport, including the battles the drivers have during the race and how fast they go through a corner. Also, when qualifying comes around, they push their car to the absolute limit to gain a few seconds off their opponents. The drivers only in the top 10 receive points from the winner getting 25 points, the last driver in the top 10 getting 1 point, and those below the top ten …

Throughout the history of the NBA, decisions regarding the signing of free agents have been riddled with complexity. Franchises are tasked with finding out what players will serve as optimal free agent signings prior to seeing them perform within the framework of their team. This study hypothesizes that the adequacy of an NBA free agent signing can be modeled and predicted through the implementation of a machine learning model. The model will learn the necessary information using training and testing data sets that include various player biometrics, game statistics, and financial information. The application of this machine learning model will …

Changing Nfl Playoff Overtime Rules To Create Equal Opportunities To Win A Game, Matthew Silvia
Honors Projects in Mathematics
The NFL has attempted to create fair overtime rules over the course of the past decade; however, this study is interested in determining what playoff overtime rule (or rules) could the NFL implement to result in outcomes where both teams have a relatively equal chance of winning a game. This study aims to find which overtime rules work best at minimizing the differences between teams who possess the ball first versus teams that kick the ball off to start an overtime period. By collecting various NFL statistics from ESPN.com and FantasyOutsiders.com, this study hopes to run multiple simulations of different …

In this paper we consider the classical ∂-problem in the case of one complex variable both for analytic and polyanalytic data. We apply the decomposition property of polyanalytic functions in order to construct particular solutions of this problem and obtain new Hörmander type estimates using suitable powers of the Cauchy-Riemann operator. We also compute particular solutions of the ∂-problem for specific polyanalytic data such as the Itô complex Hermite polynomials and polyanalytic Fock kernels.

We study optimal polynomial approximants (OPAs) in the classical Hardy spaces on the unit disk, Hp (1 < p < ∞). For fixed f ∈ Hp and n ∈ N, the OPA of degree n associated to f is the polynomial which minimizes the quantity ∥qf −1∥p over all complex polynomials q of degree less than or equal to n. We begin with some examples which illustrate, when p ≠ 2, how the Banach space geometry makes the above minimization problem interesting. We then weave through various results concerning limits and roots of these polynomials, including results which show that OPAs can be witnessed as solutions …
