Role Of Inhibition And Spiking Variability In Ortho- And Retronasal Olfactory Processing, Michelle F. Craft Jan 2022

Role Of Inhibition And Spiking Variability In Ortho- And Retronasal Olfactory Processing, Michelle F. Craft

Theses and Dissertations

Odor perception is the impetus for important animal behaviors, most pertinently for feeding, but also for mating and communication. There are two predominate modes of odor processing: odors pass through the front of nose (ortho) while inhaling and sniffing, or through the rear (retro) during exhalation and while eating and drinking. Despite the importance of olfaction for an animal’s well-being and specifically that ortho and retro naturally occur, it is unknown whether the modality (ortho versus retro) is transmitted to cortical brain regions, which could significantly instruct how odors are processed. Prior imaging studies show different …

On The Geometry Of The Multiplier Space Of ℓPA, Christopher Felder, Raymond Cheng Jan 2022

On The Geometry Of The Multiplier Space Of ℓPA, Christopher Felder, Raymond Cheng

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

For p ∊ (1, ∞)\ {2}, some properties of the space Mp of multipliers on ℓpA are derived. In particular, the failure of the weak parallelogram laws and the Pythagorean inequalities is demonstrated for Mp. It is also shown that extremal multipliers on the ℓpA spaces are exactly the monomials, in stark contrast to the p = 2 case.

New Techniques In Celestial Mechanics, Ali Abdulrasool Abdulhussein Jan 2022

New Techniques In Celestial Mechanics, Ali Abdulrasool Abdulhussein

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

It is shown that for the classical system of the N body problem ( Newtonian Motion), if the motion of the N particles starts from a planar initial motion at t=t_{0}, then the motion of the N particles continues to be planar for every t\in[t_{0},t_{1}], assuming that no collisions occur between the N particles. Same argument is shown about the linear motion, namely, for the classical system of the N body problem, if the motion of the N particles starts from a linear initial motion at t=t_{0}, then the motion of the N particles continues to be linear for every …

(R1488) Transformation Of Glucokinase Under Variable Rate Constants And Thermal Conditions: A Mathematical Model, Mukhtar Ahmad Khanday, Roohi Bhat Dec 2021

(R1488) Transformation Of Glucokinase Under Variable Rate Constants And Thermal Conditions: A Mathematical Model, Mukhtar Ahmad Khanday, Roohi Bhat

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The glucokinase (GK) in cells plays a pivotal role in the regulation of carbohydrate metabolism and acts as a sensor of glucose. It helps us to control glucose levels during fast and food intake conditions through triggering shifts in metabolism or cell functions. Various forms of hypoglycaemia and hyperglycaemia occur due to the transformations of the gene of the Glucokinase. The mathematical modelling of enzyme dynamics is an emerging research area to serve its role in biological investigations. Thus, it is imperative to establish a mathematical model to understand the kinetics of native and denatured forms of enzyme-GK under thermal …

An Alternative Class Of Ratio-Regression-Type Estimator Under Two-Phase Sampling Scheme, Muhammad Isah, Zakari Yahaya, Audu Ahmed Dec 2021

An Alternative Class Of Ratio-Regression-Type Estimator Under Two-Phase Sampling Scheme, Muhammad Isah, Zakari Yahaya, Audu Ahmed

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

In this study, a new exponential ratio-regression estimator is developed using an auxiliary variable for estimating the finite population mean under a two-phase sampling system. The Bias and Mean Square Error (MSE) of the proposed estimator are derived and compared with some of the estimators in extant literature. Thus, the conditions under which the proposed estimator is better than some existing estimators are provided. Empirically, using four real datasets and simulation study, the proposed estimator performs better than the classical ratio, classical regression, exponential ratio, and exponential regression cum ratio estimator when compared using the criteria of bias, mean square …

(R1524) The Existence And Uniqueness Of Solution For Fractional Newel-Whitehead-Segel Equation Within Caputo-Fabrizio Fractional Operator, Ali Khalouta Dec 2021

(R1524) The Existence And Uniqueness Of Solution For Fractional Newel-Whitehead-Segel Equation Within Caputo-Fabrizio Fractional Operator, Ali Khalouta

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we introduce and study the existence and uniqueness theorem of the solution for the fractional Newell-Whitehead-Segel equation within Caputo-Fabrizio fractional operator. Also, we propose a new numerical method known as natural reduced differential transform method (NRDTM) for solving this equation. We confirm our theoretical discussion with two numerical examples in order to achieve the validity and accuracy of the proposed method. The computations, associated with these examples, are performed by MATLAB software package.

(R1454) On Reducing The Linearization Coefficients Of Some Classes Of Jacobi Polynomials, Waleed Abd-Elhameed, Afnan Ali Dec 2021

(R1454) On Reducing The Linearization Coefficients Of Some Classes Of Jacobi Polynomials, Waleed Abd-Elhameed, Afnan Ali

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

This article is concerned with establishing some new linearization formulas of the modified Jacobi polynomials of certain parameters. We prove that the linearization coefficients involve hypergeometric functions of the type 4F3(1). Moreover, we show that the linearization coefficients can be reduced in several cases by either utilizing certain standard formulas, and in particular Pfaff-Saalschütz identity and Watson’s theorem, or via employing the symbolic algebraic algorithms of Zeilberger, Petkovsek, and van Hoeij. New formulas for some definite integrals are obtained with the aid of the developed linearization formulas.

Under Pressure: A Case Study Of The Effects Of External Pressure On Mlb Players Using Twitter Sentiment Analysis, Jonathan Huntley Nov 2021

Under Pressure: A Case Study Of The Effects Of External Pressure On Mlb Players Using Twitter Sentiment Analysis, Jonathan Huntley

Honors Projects in Mathematics

Performance under pressure and psychological momentum are well-documented topics in sports psychology, but most research focuses on “in-game” pressure. This study views pressure more broadly to examine how the external pressure of fans, quantified using the sentiment of tweets mentioning the players, can affect how MLB players perform. Although external pressure is intangible, it can impact a player’s psyche and performance. This investigation focuses on players Chris Sale and David Price. A new process was developed leveraging the Vader package in Python that can generate tweet sentiment to compare to several performance metrics from Baseball Reference. Results proved to be …

Differentiability Of The Liouville Map Via Geodesic Currents, Xinlong Dong Sep 2021

Differentiability Of The Liouville Map Via Geodesic Currents, Xinlong Dong

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

For a conformally hyperbolic Riemann surface, the Teichmüller space is the space of quasiconformal maps factored by an equivalence relation, and it is a complex Banach manifold. The space of geodesic currents endowed with the uniform weak* topology is a subset of a Fréchet space of Hölder distributions. We introduce an appropriate topology on the space of Hölder distributions and this new topology coincides with the uniform weak* topology on the space of geodesic currents. The Liouville map of the Teichmüller space becomes differentiable in the Fréchet sense. In particular, the derivative of Liouville currents exists and belongs to the …
