Reactive Routing In Hidra Networks, Scott Michael Marshall Mar 2011

Reactive Routing In Hidra Networks, Scott Michael Marshall

Computer Engineering

In recent years, the Internet has grown so large that the future scalability of the Internet has become a major concern. The two primary scalability concerns are the size of the forwarding table and the ability for BGP to converge while distributing hundreds of thousands of routes.

HIDRA is a new Internet routing architecture that is backwards-compatible with existing routing technologies and protocols that focuses on feasibility-of-implementation. HIDRA remedies the first Internet scalability concern by proposing a means to reduce the number of entries in the default-free zone (DFZ) forwarding table.

This project extends HIDRA by designing a complete reactive …

Advanced I/O Techniques For Efficient And Highly Available Process Crash Recovery Protocols, Jason Warren Cornwell Mar 2011

Advanced I/O Techniques For Efficient And Highly Available Process Crash Recovery Protocols, Jason Warren Cornwell

Theses and Dissertations

As the number of CPU cores in high-performance computing platforms continues to grow, the availability and reliability of these systems become a primary concern. As such, some solutions are physical (ie. power backup) and some are software driven. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has created a system-level fault-tolerant checkpoint/restart implementation for Linux Clusters. This allows processes to restart computations at the last known checkpoint in the event the system crashes. The checkpoint data creation is highly dependent on system input and output operations. This paper proposes: (i) a technique to improve the efficiency of these I/O operations and (ii) an alternative …

The study of codon usage bias is an important research area that contributes to our understanding of molecular evolution, phylogenetic relationships, respiratory lifestyle, and other characteristics. Translational efficiency bias is perhaps the most well studied codon usage bias, as it is frequently utilized to predict relative protein expression levels. We present a novel approach to isolating translational efficiency bias in microbial genomes. There are several existent methods for isolating translational efficiency bias. Previous approaches are susceptible to the confounding influences of other potentially dominant biases. Additionally, existing approaches to identifying translational efficiency bias generally require both genomic sequence information and …

Relationships play a key role in Semantic Web to connect the dots between entities (concepts or instances in a way that enables to absorb the real sense of the entities. Even though relationships are important, it is difficult to categorize or identify them because they consist of complex knowledge in the schema. Therefore systematically identifying relationships yield many advantages and open doors for new research avenues. In this work, we try to identify a specific type of relationship (part of) in a multi-domain dataset and devised an algorithm using Wikipedia to identify patterns of part of relationships in the dataset. …

Kno.e.sis Publications

The problem of efficient and high-quality clustering of extreme scale datasets with complex clustering structures continues to be one of the most challenging data analysis problems. An innovate use of data cloud would provide unique opportunity to address this challenge. In this paper, we propose the CloudVista framework to address (1) the problems caused by using sampling in the existing approaches and (2) the problems with the latency caused by cloud-side processing on interactive cluster visualization. The CloudVista framework aims to explore the entire large data stored in the cloud with the help of the data structure visual frame and …

Kno.e.sis Publications

Relationships play a key role in Semantic Web to connect the dots between entities (concepts or instances) in a way that enables to absorb the real sense of the entities. Some interesting relationships would give proof for the existence of subject and object in triples which in tern can be defined as evidential relationships. Identifying evidential relationships will yield solutions to some existing inference problems and open doors for new applications and research. Part_of relationships are identified as a special kind of an evidential relationship out of membership, causality and etc. Linked Open data as a global data space would …

Contextual Ontology Alignment Of Lod With An Upper Ontology: A Case Study With Proton, Prateek Jain, Peter Z. Yeh, Kunal Verma, Reymonrod G. Vasquez, Mariana Darnorva, Pascal Hitzler, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

The Linked Open Data (LOD) is a major milestone towards realizing the Semantic Web vision, and can enable applications such as robust Question Answering (QA) systems that can answer queries requiring multiple, disparate information sources. However, realizing these applications requires relationships at both the schema and instance level, but currently the LOD only provides relationships for the latter. To address this limitation, we present a solution for automatically finding schema-level links between two LOD ontologies – in the sense of ontology alignment. Our solution, called BLOOMS+, extends our previous solution (i.e. BLOOMS) in two significant ways. BLOOMS+ 1) uses a …

Reconciling Owl And Rules, David Carral Martinez, Adila A. Krisnadhi, Frederick Maier, Kunal Sengupta, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

We report on a recent advance in integrating Rules and OWL. We discuss a recent proposal, known as nominal schemas, which realizes a seamless integration of Datalog rules into the description logic SROIQ which underlies OWL 2 DL. We present extensions of the standardized OWL syntaxes to incorporate nominal schemas, reasoning algorithms, and a first naive implementation. And we argue why this approach goes a long way towards overcoming the present paradigm split.

Centralized social networking websites raise scalability issues - due to the growing number of participants - and, as well as, policy concerns - such as control, privacy and ownership over the user's published data. Distributed Social Networks aim to solve this issue by enabling architecture where people own their data and share it their own way. However, the privacy and scalability challenge is still to be tackled. This paper presents a privacy-aware extension to Google's PubSubHubbub protocol, using Semantic Web technologies, solving both the scalability and the privacy issues in Distributed Social Networks. We enhanced the traditional feature of PubSubHubbub …

Background

A critical aspect of the NIH Translational Research roadmap, which seeks to accelerate the delivery of "bench-side" discoveries to patient's "bedside," is the management of the provenance metadata that keeps track of the origin and history of data resources as they traverse the path from the bench to the bedside and back. A comprehensive provenance framework is essential for researchers to verify the quality of data, reproduce scientific results published in peer-reviewed literature, validate scientific process, and associate trust value with data and results. Traditional approaches to provenance management have focused on only partial sections of the translational research …

A Qos Aware Framework For Wireless Sensor Networks In Industrial Environments, Berta Carballido Villaverde Jan 2011

A Qos Aware Framework For Wireless Sensor Networks In Industrial Environments, Berta Carballido Villaverde

Theses

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are a key enabling technology for industrial monitoring applications where the use of wireless infrastructure allows high adaptivity and low cost in terms of installation and retrofitting. Although WSNs present several advantages over traditional wired monitoring systems, there is significant concern as to the reliability of wireless communications due to the unpredictability of the wireless channel, which is inhibiting the widespread adoption of the technology. Furthermore, due to the diverse range of monitoring applications that are found in industrial environments and their differing requirements, there is a need for quality of service (QoS) provisioning so that …

In-Degree Dynamics Of Large-Scale P2p Systems, Zhongmei Yao, Daren B. H. Cline, Dmitri Loguinov Jan 2011

In-Degree Dynamics Of Large-Scale P2p Systems, Zhongmei Yao, Daren B. H. Cline, Dmitri Loguinov

Computer Science Faculty Publications

This paper builds a complete modeling framework for understanding user churn and in-degree dynamics in unstructured P2P systems in which each user can be viewed as a stationary alternating renewal process. While the classical Poisson result on the superposition of n stationary renewal processes for n→∞ requires that each point process become sparser as n increases, it is often difficult to rigorously show this condition in practice. In this paper, we first prove that despite user heterogeneity and non-Poisson arrival dynamics, a superposition of edge-arrival processes to a live user under uniform selection converges to a Poisson process when …

The emergence of dynamic information sources - including sensor networks - has led to large streams of real-time data on the Web. Research studies suggest, these dynamic networks have created more data in the last three years than in the entire history of civilization, and this trend will only increase in the coming years. With this coming data explosion, real-time analytics software must either adapt or die. This paper focuses on the task of integrating and analyzing multiple heterogeneous streams of sensor data with the goal of creating meaningful abstractions, or features. These features are then temporally aggregated into feature …

In virtual MIMO technology, distributed single-antenna radio systems cooperate on information transmission and reception as a multiple-antenna MIMO radio system. In this paper, a cooperative transmission scheme, virtual MIMO network formation and reconfiguration algorithms, and a cooperative routing backbone are cross-layered designed for wireless sensor networks (WSNs) to jointly achieve required reliability, energy efficiency and delay reduction. The proposed cooperative transmission scheme minimizes the number of intra communications among cooperative nodes. It can save energy and reduces latency at transmission links even when the distance between cooperative nodes is large. In the proposed routing backbone, energy consumption and latency are …

Self-Stabilizing Leader Election In Dynamic Networks, Hema Piniganti Dec 2010

Self-Stabilizing Leader Election In Dynamic Networks, Hema Piniganti

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The leader election problem is one of the fundamental problems in distributed computing. It has applications in almost every domain. In dynamic networks, topology is expected to change frequently. An algorithm A is self-stabilizing if, starting from a completely arbitrary configuration, the network will eventually reach a legitimate configuration.

Note that any self-stabilizing algorithm for the leader election problem is also an algorithm for the dynamic leader election problem, since when the topology of the network changes, we can consider that the algorithm is starting over again from an arbitrary state. There are a number of such algorithms in the …

Dynamic Distributed Programming And Applications To Swap Edge Problem, Feven Z. Andemeskel Dec 2010

Dynamic Distributed Programming And Applications To Swap Edge Problem, Feven Z. Andemeskel

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Link failure is a common reason for disruption in communication networks. If communication between processes of a weighted distributed network is maintained by a spanning tree T, and if one edge e of T fails, communication can be restored by finding a new spanning tree, T’. If the network is 2-edge connected, T’ can always be constructed by replacing e by a single edge, e’, of the network. We refer to e’ as a swap edge of e.

The best swap edge problem is to find the best choice of e’, that is, that e which causes the new spanning …

Flexible Bootstrapping-Based Ontology Alignment, Prateek Jain, Pascal Hitzler, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

BLOOMS (Jain et al, ISWC2010) is an ontology alignment system which, in its core, utilizes the Wikipedia category hierarchy for establishing alignments. In this paper, we present a Plug-and-Play extension to BLOOMS, which allows to flexibly replace or complement the use of Wikipedia by other online or offline resources, including domain-specific ontologies or taxonomies. By making use of automated translation services and of Wikipedia in languages other than English, it makes it possible to apply BLOOMS to alignment tasks where the input ontologies are written in different languages.

Ontology Alignment For Linked Open Data, Prateek Jain, Pascal Hitzler, Amit P. Sheth, Kunal Verma, Peter Z. Yeh

Kno.e.sis Publications

The Web of Data currently coming into existence through the Linked Open Data (LOD) effort is a major milestone in realizing the Semantic Web vision. However, the development of applications based on LOD faces difficulties due to the fact that the different LOD datasets are rather loosely connected pieces of information. In particular, links between LOD datasets are almost exclusively on the level of instances, and schema-level information is being ignored. In this paper, we therefore present a system for finding schema-level links between LOD datasets in the sense of ontology alignment. Our system, called BLOOMS, is based on the …

Efficient Mining Of Multiple Partial Near-Duplicate Alignments By Temporal Network, Hung-Khoon Tan, Chong-Wah Ngo, Tat-Seng Chua Nov 2010

Efficient Mining Of Multiple Partial Near-Duplicate Alignments By Temporal Network, Hung-Khoon Tan, Chong-Wah Ngo, Tat-Seng Chua

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper considers the mining and localization of near-duplicate segments at arbitrary positions of partial near-duplicate videos in a corpus. Temporal network is proposed to model the visual-temporal consistency between video sequence by embedding temporal constraints as directed edges in the network. Partial alignment is then achieved through network flow programming. To handle multiple alignments, we consider two properties of network structure: conciseness and divisibility, to ensure that the mining is efficient and effective. Frame-level matching is further integrated in the temporal network for alignment verification. This results in an iterative alignment-verification procedure to fine tune the localization of near-duplicate …
