A Trust-By-Learning Framework For Secure 6g Wireless Networks Under Native Generative Ai Attacks, Md Shirajum Munir, Sravanthi Proddatoori, Manjushree Muralidhara, Trinidad Mario Dena, Walid Saad, Zhu Han, Sachin Shetty

Center for Secure and Intelligent Critical Systems (CSICS) Publications

Sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks will become vulnerable due to native generative AI (GenAI)-driven intelligent poisoning attacks in both the radio unit and the core network. In particular, network parameters and metrics in cross-layer design pose fundamentally uncertain conditions and can be compromised through the native GenAI mechanism, which leverages data augmentation and reconstruction capabilities. This work investigates the capabilities of native GenAI to create novel poisoning attacks in wireless networks, while investigating their impact through uncertainty-informed root analysis. Then, detected attacks are mitigated by developing a trustworthy service aggregation in the wireless network. First, a joint decision problem is formulated …

Randomized Algorithms For Approximating A Connected Dominating Set In Wireless Sensor Networks, Akshaye Dhawan, Michelle Tanco, Aaron Yeiser

Mathematics, Computer Science & Statistics Faculty Publications

A Connected Dominating Set (CDS) of a graph representing a Wireless Sensor Network can be used as a virtual backbone for routing through the network. Since the sensors in the network are constrained by limited battery life, we desire a minimal CDS for the network, a known NP-hard problem. In this paper we present three randomized algorithms for constructing a CDS. We evaluate our algorithms using simulations and compare them to the two-hop K2 algorithm and two other greedy algorithms from the literature. After pruning, the randomized algorithms construct a CDS that are generally equivalent in size to those constructed …

Optimal Performance Trade-Offs In Mac For Wireless Sensor Networks Powered By Heterogeneous Ambient Energy Harvesting, Jin Yunye, Hwee-Pink Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In wireless sensor networks powered by ambient energy harvesting (WSNs-HEAP), sensor nodes' energy harvesting rates are spatially heterogeneous and temporally variant, which impose difficulties for medium access control (MAC). In this paper, we first derive the necessary conditions under which channel utilization and fairness are optimal in a WSN-HEAP, respectively. Based on the analysis, we propose an earliest deadline first (EDF) polling MAC protocol, which regulates transmission sequence of the sensor nodes based on the spatially heterogeneous energy harvesting rates. It also mitigates temporal variations in energy harvesting rates by a prediction and update mechanism. Simulation results verify the performance …

A Distributed Greedy Algorithm For Constructing Connected Dominating Sets In Wireless Sensor Networks, Akshaye Dhawan, Nicholas A. Scoville, Michelle Tanco

Mathematics, Computer Science & Statistics Faculty Publications

A Connected Dominating Set (CDS) of the graph representing a Wireless Sensor Network can be used as a virtual backbone for routing in the network. Since sensor nodes are constrained by limited on-board batteries, it is desirable to have a small CDS for the network. However, constructing a minimum size CDS has been shown to be a NP-hard problem. In this paper we present a distributed greedy algorithm for constructing a CDS that we call Greedy Connect. Our algorithm operates in two phases, first constructing a dominating set and then connecting the nodes in this set. We evaluate our algorithm …

A Multi-Modal Sensing And Communication Platform For Continental-Scale Migratory Bird Tracking, David J. Anthony May 2012

A Multi-Modal Sensing And Communication Platform For Continental-Scale Migratory Bird Tracking, David J. Anthony

Department of Computer Electronics and Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This thesis presents a novel platform for tracking migratory birds on a continental scale. Cellular technology is used to augment the short-range radios that have traditionally been used in wireless sensor networks. The platform utilizes multiple sensors, including a GPS and solid state compass. By using these sensors, the platform is capable of not only tracking a bird’s migration path, but also provides information on a bird’s behavior during its life-cycle. Testing methodology utilizing simulations and aspect-oriented programming is used to reveal faults in the platform prior to deployment on wild animals. In collaboration with the International Crane Foundation, and …

Networks - I: A Dynamic Transmission Power Control Routing Protocol To Avoid Network Partitioning In Wireless Sensor Networks, Ghufran Ahmed, Noor M. Khan, Mirza M Yasir Masood

International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies

Power utilization in an efficient manner is a hot research issue in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). WSNs consist of energy hungry sensor nodes. Researchers have been trying to increase the lifetime of WSN since the development of WSN technology. Dynamic Transmission Power Control (DTPC) is a method for an efficient utilization of the energy resource and thus leads to an increase in lifetime. It has been used for the determination of minimum transmission power. A valuable study about the impact of variable transmission power on link quality has already been present in literature. In contrast to DTPC, transmitting data at …

Networks - I: A Comparative Analysis Of Energy-Aware Routing Protocols In Wireless Sensor Networks, Mohsin Raza, Ghufran Ahmed, Noor M. Khan, M Awais, Qasim Badar

International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies

This paper presents the implementation of two routing protocols for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs): GRACE (GRAdient Cost Establishment for Energy Aware routing) and GRAB (GRAdient Broadcasting) along with their comparative analysis using Sun SPOT sensor nodes, developed by Sun Microsystems. The performance of both the routing protocols is evaluated on the basis of various performance metrics including network lifetime, throughput and network energy etc. However in papers where these routing protocols presented, practical limitations of wireless sensor nodes were ignored. The communication of sensor nodes is established using multiple communication channels for proper implementation of both the routing protocols, GRACE …

Cross-Layer Design For Cooperative Wireless Sensor Networks With Multiple Optimizations, Wei Chen, Heh Miao, Liang Hong

Computer Science Faculty Research

In virtual MIMO technology, distributed single-antenna radio systems cooperate on information transmission and reception as a multiple-antenna MIMO radio system. In this paper, a cooperative transmission scheme, virtual MIMO network formation and reconfiguration algorithms, and a cooperative routing backbone are cross-layered designed for wireless sensor networks (WSNs) to jointly achieve required reliability, energy efficiency and delay reduction. The proposed cooperative transmission scheme minimizes the number of intra communications among cooperative nodes. It can save energy and reduces latency at transmission links even when the distance between cooperative nodes is large. In the proposed routing backbone, energy consumption and latency are …

International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies

Putting constraints on performance of a system in the temporal domain, some times turns right into wrong and update into outdate. These are the scenarios where apposite value of time inveterate in the reality. But such timing precision not only requires tightly scheduled performance constraints but also requires optimal design and operation of all system components. Any malfunctioning at any relevant aspect may causes a serious disaster and even loss of human lives. Managing and interacting with such real-time system becomes much intricate when the resources are limited as in wireless sensor nodes. A wireless sensor node is typically comprises …

Efficient Corona Training Protocols For Sensor Networks, Alan A. Bertossi, Stephan Olariu, Cristina M. Pinotti

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Phenomenal advances in nano-technology and packaging have made it possible to develop miniaturized low-power devices that integrate sensing, special-purpose computing, and wireless communications capabilities. It is expected that these small devices, referred to as sensors, will be mass-produced and deployed, making their production cost negligible. Due to their small form factor and modest non-renewable energy budget, individual sensors are not expected to be GPS-enabled. Moreover, in most applications, exact geographic location is not necessary, and all that the individual sensors need is a coarse-grain location awareness. The task of acquiring such a coarse-grain location awareness is referred to as training. …
