In order to test tactical and other fertilizer decision making methods (Table 1), we carried out three trials in 1988 and a further seven trials in 1989 (Table 2).
To date this programme has provided a lot of information which can be used to test and validate current (and future) methods of predicting yield potential and nitrogen status of a crop as the season progresses. However, our inability to predict end …

New Block Badgingarra Rs Late Time Of Seeding., J. W. Bowden, R. J. Lunt
Experimental Summaries - Plant Research
Trial 89BA33,
Location: Badgingarra
Based on a 1.5 t/ha potential yield, the strategic treatment was planned to be 120 kg urea/ha 4WAS. However, the crop was poorly established and so NH4NO3 was used in the hope of getting better tillering than would be possible with the slower release urea source. Gambling on equal dollars to urea for 2/3 N, but believe that twice as effective.
DAP was used to place nitrogen with the seed in case there was no rain of significance after seeding. This nitrogen (only 5 kg/ha) was probably lost with the rains of 20-28/7/89 (50 mm). Urea …
Gas-Phase And Computational Studies Of Pentacoordinate Silicon, Robert Damrauer, Larry W. Burggraf, Larry P. Davis, Mark S. Gordon
Gas-Phase And Computational Studies Of Pentacoordinate Silicon, Robert Damrauer, Larry W. Burggraf, Larry P. Davis, Mark S. Gordon
Mark S. Gordon
We have demonstrated that a wide variety of pentacoordinate silicon anions (siliconates) should be stable and can be prepared by combining the predictive powers of MNDO and ab initio computational methods and the flowing afterglow (FA) experimental technique. MNDO has been used to compute the anion affinities of 91 siliconates; all but five of these are predicted to be stable with respect to the loss of an anion. Twenty-four siliconates, most of them previously unreported, have been prepared and studied in the FA. The MNDO predictions were, in general, consistent with the experimental results and with trends previously reported by …

Harvested And Grazed Lupin Stubbles On Following Wheat South Carrabin., J W. Bowden
Experimental Summaries - Plant Research
Location: South Carrabin lease block
Harvested and grazed lupin stubbles on following wheat. Trial 86M8
This trial is difficult to analyze statistically because of the treatment changes induced by sheep breaking in to some of the plots. Further, lupin grain yields were not very high and so differences between harvested and unharvested treatments are not large. Also the grazing intensity was not very severe (except on the unintentionally grazed plots) and so the effect of grazing is also relatively small.

Phosphorus Levels And Disease On Lupins, J W. Bowden
Experimental Summaries - Plant Research
Trial 87LG39 (81LG29) 87ME62
Location: Pingaring.
It has been suggested that high levels of phosphorus application to lupins can reduce the impact of leaf and root diseases. Two old rotation trials provided a range of disease burdens, across which phosphate rates on lupins were applied. Disease scores, vegetative yields, phosphorus concentration and seed yields were measured.

4th successive crop on new land. Trial has shown that the effectiveness of the different types of rock phosphate were about the fifth to one tenth as effective as the fresh (triple) superphosphate applied in 1984. The effectiveness of the superphosphate, decreased by 60 between year 1 and 2, and by a further 10-15% by 1987. This experiment will continue as pasture for 1988 and 1989, and will be re-cropped in 1990. The experiment is also assessing soil testing for P. but soil test data …
Thermal Decomposition Of Silane, Mark S. Gordon, David R. Gano, J. Stephen Binkley, Michael J. Frisch
Thermal Decomposition Of Silane, Mark S. Gordon, David R. Gano, J. Stephen Binkley, Michael J. Frisch
Mark S. Gordon
The essential features of the potential energy surface for the thermal decomposition of silane have been calculated with extended basis sets, augmented by correlation corrections. It is predicted that the transition state for the molecular elimination lies 56.9 kcaljmol above silane. For the reverse reaction, the transition state is less than 2 kcal/mol above the separated fragments, silylene and molecular hydrogen, but 4.8 kcal/mol above a long-range potential well. In the latter, the silylene-H2 separation is 1.78 A, and the bond in H2 has stretched by more than 0.05 A. This indicates a significant electronic interaction between the fragments even …
