Realistic Orbits About The Martian Moons, Samuel R. Bryant
Realistic Orbits About The Martian Moons, Samuel R. Bryant
Theses and Dissertations
Orbits about the Martian moons, Phobos and Deimos, previously found to be stable by the Poincare surface of section technique in a restricted three- body system, were investigated with non-zero eccentricity of the moons added to the dynamics of the planar four-body system (Mars, moon sun, artificial satellite). Although not strictly applicable to this case, the surface of section technique was used to verify whether or not the previously found stable orbits were realistic when a real world perturbation was added to the system dynamics. The surface of section technique involves the numerical integration of several orbits with the same …

Geodesic Orbits About An Axisymmetric Mass Distribution, David J. Dean
Geodesic Orbits About An Axisymmetric Mass Distribution, David J. Dean
Honors Theses
The General Theory of Relativity (GRT) gives rise to many interesting questions, one of which is a question about how test particles orbit various relativistic mass configurations. A test particle is defined as an electrically neutral particle small enough that its self gravitating energy, as calculated using standard Newtonian theory, can be neglected when compared with the particle's rest mass, ie. M/R << 1. (Here M is the mass of the particle in meters, and R is the radius of the particle again in meters. The mass of the sun in these units is 1.47 km.) For example, the earth, which can be considered a test particle for the sun, travels about the sun in an elliptic orbit. What would happen if the sun suddenly became a black-hole? How would the earth's orbit be affected? It is the purpose of this paper to answer these questions not only for the case of the spherical black-hole (which has been extensively studied), but also for the case of an axisymmetric mass distribution idealized by a long thin rod-like mass (which will henceforth be referred to as a line mass). The classical case and relativistic case concerning orbits about the line mass will be discussed, along with some interesting features of the relativistic line mass orbits. Some background information concerning GRT will be needed before the problem of line mass is approached.

Observations Of Shadow Bands At The Total Solar Eclipse Of 16 February 1980, Laurence A. Marschall, Rita Mahon, Richard C. Henry
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
Photoelectric observations of short term light variations (shadow bands) at the 16 Feb. 1980 total solar eclipse have been made using a set of spatially separated PIN diodes. Light variations in a bandpass of 1-500 Hz were detected during the half-minutes preceding and following the total phase. Fourier analysis of the noise spectrum of the variations reveals a sharp drop-off for frequencies about 50 Hz and an overall spectrum quite similar to previously reported power spectra of stellar scintillation. This is consistent with an atmospheric origin for the shadow bands. Cross-correlations between the detector outputs are low, suggesting a short …

Ionization Of Carbon And Nitrogen In The Intercloud Medium, Menas Kafatos, H. Gerola, S. Hatchett, R. Mccray
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
If the intercloud medium in the solar neighborhood was suddenly ionized less than 106 years ago, the subsequent relaxation of the gas can account for the very low observed column density of C III and N III yet still leave a significant fraction ("'0.05) of ionized hydrogen and of C I in a cold (T ≈ 20° K) intercloud medium. The OAO-C Copernicus observations in the direction of X Sco are consistent with cosmic abundances and a uniform-density medium, except for C III whose predicted column density from the C m ionization zone surrounding the star is a factor ~1Q …
