All Physics Faculty Publications

A versatile vacuum system for long duration testing of materials modifications due to exposure to simulated space environment conditions has been designed and built. The chamber is particularly well suited for cost-effective tests of multiple small scale materials samples over prolonged exposure. Critical environmental components simulated include neutral gas [ultrahigh vacuum (10-7 Pa) to ambient], FUV/UV/VIS/NIR solar spectrum, electron plasma fluxes, and temperature. The UV/VIS/NIR solar spectrum is simulated using an external, normally incidence and collimated class AAA Solar Simulator source, with standard Air Mass Zero (AM0) filters to shape the incident radiation spectrum. This Xe arc discharge tube source …

The Quotient Of The Beta-Weibull Distribution, Nonhle Channon Mdziniso Jan 2012

The Quotient Of The Beta-Weibull Distribution, Nonhle Channon Mdziniso

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

A new class of distributions recently developed involves the logit of the beta distribution. Among this class of distributions are, the beta-Normal (Eugene et al. [15]); beta-Gumbel (Nadarajah and Kotz [18]); beta-Exponential (Nadarajah and Kotz [19]); beta-Weibull (Famoye et al. [6]); beta-Rayleigh (Akinsete and Lowe [3]); beta-Laplace (Kozubowshi and Nadarajah [20]); and beta-Pareto (Akinsete et al. [4]), among a few others. Many useful statistical properties arising from these distributions and their applications to real life data have been discussed in literature. One approach by which a new statistical distribution is generated is by the transformation of random variables having known …

Discrete Event Simulation Of Elevator Systems, Sasi Bharath Desai Jan 2012

Discrete Event Simulation Of Elevator Systems, Sasi Bharath Desai

CMC Senior Theses

The intent of this paper is to present the reader with a simple comparison of two systems of vertical transportation. Vertical transportation is a a relatively new field and is the subject of much interest in today's world. As buildings get taller and real estate becomes more expensive, the need to find a quick, efficient system with a small footprint becomes important. By performing a simulation and subjecting the two systems under study to similar traffic conditions, one can determine the effectiveness of one system relative to the other. Additionally, we look at the effects of changing various system attributes …

Simulation And Phases Of Macroscopic Particles In Vortex Flow, Heath Eric Rice Jan 2012

Simulation And Phases Of Macroscopic Particles In Vortex Flow, Heath Eric Rice

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Granular materials are an interesting class of media in that they exhibit many disparate characteristics depending on conditions. The same set of particles may behave like a solid, liquid, gas, something in-between, or something completely unique depending on the conditions. Practically speaking, granular materials are used in many aspects of manufacturing, therefore any new information gleaned about them may help refine these techniques. For example, learning of a possible instability may help avoid it in practical application, saving machinery, money, and even personnel. To that end, we intend to simulate a granular medium under tornado-like vortex airflow by varying particle …

The Inexorable Resistance Of Inertia Determines The Initial Regime Of Drop Coalescence, Joseph Paulsen, Justin C. Burton, Sidney R. Nagel, Santosh Appathurai, Michael T. Harris, Osman A. Basaran Jan 2012

The Inexorable Resistance Of Inertia Determines The Initial Regime Of Drop Coalescence, Joseph Paulsen, Justin C. Burton, Sidney R. Nagel, Santosh Appathurai, Michael T. Harris, Osman A. Basaran

Physics - All Scholarship

Drop coalescence is central to diverse processes involving dispersions of drops in industrial, engineering, and scientific realms. During coalescence, two drops first touch and then merge as the liquid neck connecting them grows from initially microscopic scales to a size comparable to the drop diameters. The curvature of the interface is infinite at the point where the drops first make contact, and the flows that ensue as the two drops coalesce are intimately coupled to this singularity in the dynamics. Conventionally, this process has been thought to have just two dynamical regimes: a viscous and an inertial regime with a …

Parsing The Relationship Between Baserunning And Batting Abilities Within Lineups, Ben S. Baumer, James Piette, Brad Null Jan 2012

Parsing The Relationship Between Baserunning And Batting Abilities Within Lineups, Ben S. Baumer, James Piette, Brad Null

Statistical and Data Sciences: Faculty Publications

A baseball team's offensive prowess is a function of two types of abilities: batting and baserunning. While each has been studied extensively in isolation, the effects of their interaction is not well understood. We model offensive output as a scalar function f of an individual player's batting and baserunning profile z. Each of these profiles is in turn estimated from Retrosheet data using heirarchical Bayesian models. We then use the SimulOutCome simulation engine as a method to generate values of f(z) over a fine grid of points. Finally, for each of several methods of taking the extra base, we graphically …

Modelling Β2ar Regulation, Sharat J. Vayttaden Dec 2011

Modelling Β2ar Regulation, Sharat J. Vayttaden

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

The β2 adrenergic receptor (β2AR) regulates smooth muscle relaxation in the vasculature and airways. Long- and Short-acting β-agonists (LABAs/SABAs) are widely used in treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD) and asthma. Despite their widespread clinical use we do not understand well the dominant β2AR regulatory pathways that are stimulated during therapy and bring about tachyphylaxis, which is the loss of drug effects. Thus, an understanding of how the β2AR responds to various β-agonists is crucial to their rational use. Towards that end we have developed deterministic models that explore the mechanism of drug- induced β2AR regulation. These mathematical models …

Simulation Of Mobile Treatment Monitoring System, Emre Ermisoglu Aug 2011

Simulation Of Mobile Treatment Monitoring System, Emre Ermisoglu

Theses and Dissertations

Noncompliance is the main reason for treatment failure. Approximately 50 to 75% of patients misuse their medication due to forgetfulness and busy schedule. Instead of heavily depending on patient's memory for following medication deadlines, we propose a new automated medication helper called "Mobile Treatment Monitoring System" to help patients take their medication on time. Among other technologies that help patients to follow up their medication such as Pill Organizers, Medication Reminders, and Pill Dispensers, using remote treatment monitoring system appears to be a promising technology because system creates a direct link between doctor and patient so doctor will be notified …

Modeling And Simulation Of Hpc System Through Job Scheduling Analysis, William Bradley Hurst Aug 2011

Modeling And Simulation Of Hpc System Through Job Scheduling Analysis, William Bradley Hurst

Theses and Dissertations

The sophistication of the devices through which a man shapes his world are the tool-marks of his development upon history. One device currently shaping the lives of man is the High Performance Computer (HPC) system. HPC systems have been described as ``a game changing technology (King and BusinessWeek, 2010).'' The reason for HPC systems to be declared ``a game changing technology (King and BusinessWeek, 2010)'' comes from the fact that it is cheaper for a manufacturer to conduct thousands of tests in virtual space, than it is to try multiple experimental designs in the physical world. Through capabilities of HPC …

A Framework For Generating Data To Simulate Application Scoring, Kenneth Kennedy, Sarah Jane Delany, Brian Mac Namee Aug 2011

A Framework For Generating Data To Simulate Application Scoring, Kenneth Kennedy, Sarah Jane Delany, Brian Mac Namee

Conference papers

In this paper we propose a framework to generate artificial data that can be used to simulate credit risk scenarios. Artificial data is useful in the credit scoring domain for two reasons. Firstly, the use of artificial data allows for the introduction and control of variability that can realistically be expected to occur, but has yet to materialise in practice. The ability to control parameters allows for a thorough exploration of the performance of classification models under different conditions. Secondly, due to non-disclosure agreements and commercial sensitivities, obtaining real credit scoring data is a problematic and time consuming task. By …

Simcol: A Simulation Tool For Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning, Nobel Khandaker, Leen-Kiat Soh

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

Researchers designing the multiagent tools and techniques for computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) environments are often faced with high cost, time, and effort required to investigate the effectiveness of their tools and techniques in large scale and longitudinal studies in a real-world environment containing human users. Here, we propose SimCoL, a multiagent environment that simulates collaborative learning among students and agents providing support to the teacher and the students. Our goal with SimCoL is to provide a comprehensive test bed for multiagent researchers to investigate 1) theoretical multiagent research issues, e.g., coalition formation, multiagent learning, and communication, where humans are involved …

Empirical Comparison Of Some Test Statistics For Testing The Mean Of A Poisson Distribution, B. M. Golam Kibria, Florence George Jun 2011

Empirical Comparison Of Some Test Statistics For Testing The Mean Of A Poisson Distribution, B. M. Golam Kibria, Florence George

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

This paper considers the problem of hypotheses testing of the mean of a Poisson distribution. Accordingly we consider the following test statistics: Wald, WCC, Score (S), FT, VS, RVS, Exact and Bayes test statistics. A simulation study based on both one and two sided alternatives has been conducted to compare the performances of the test statistics. The study suggests that for a large sample size, all proposed test statistics except VCC and FT perform well in the sense of correct type I error rate of the test and power. However, for a small sample size, Score and VS have better …

Turbulence And Bias-Induced Flows In Simple Magnetized Toroidal Plasmas, B. Li, B. N. Rogers, P. Ricci, K. W. Gentle May 2011

Turbulence And Bias-Induced Flows In Simple Magnetized Toroidal Plasmas, B. Li, B. N. Rogers, P. Ricci, K. W. Gentle

Dartmouth Scholarship

Turbulence and bias-induced flows in simple magnetized toroidal plasmas are explored with global three- dimensional fluid simulations, focusing on the parameters of the Helimak experiment. The simulations show that plasma turbulence and transport in the regime of interest are dominated by the ideal interchange instability. The application of a bias voltage alters the structure of the plasma potential, resulting in the equilibrium sheared flows. These bias-induced vertical flows located in the gradient region appear to reduce the radial extent of turbulent structures, and thereby lower the radial plasma transport on the low field side.

Multiagent Coalition Formation In Uncertain Environments With Type-Changing Influences And Its Application Towards Forming Human Coalitions, Nobel A. Khandaker May 2011

Multiagent Coalition Formation In Uncertain Environments With Type-Changing Influences And Its Application Towards Forming Human Coalitions, Nobel A. Khandaker

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

We aim to solve the problem forming multiagent coalitions in uncertain environments where the coalition members’ capability of solving tasks change due to their learning. The MCFP-Mproblem for the agents refers to forming or joining coalitions on behalf of a set of human users so that those human users can solve tasks and improve their types (expertise) to improve their performances over time. MCFP-A problem for a set of agents refers to their forming or joining coalitions so that they are able to solve a set of assigned tasks while optimize their performance over time. We propose the Integrated Human …

The Impact Of The User Interface On Simulation Usability And Solution Quality, Bruce Ray Montgomery Jan 2011

The Impact Of The User Interface On Simulation Usability And Solution Quality, Bruce Ray Montgomery

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

This research outlines a study that was performed to determine the effects of user interface design variations on the usability and solution quality of complex, multivariate discrete-event simulations. Specifically, this study examined four key research questions: what are the user interface considerations for a given simulation model, what are the current best practices in user interface design for simulations, how is usability best evaluated for simulation interfaces, and specifically what are the measured effects of varying levels of usability of interface elements on simulation operations such as data entry and solution analysis. The overall goal of the study was to …

Simulation Of Polycapillary And Multichannel Plate X-Ray Optics, Robert Schmitz Jan 2011

Simulation Of Polycapillary And Multichannel Plate X-Ray Optics, Robert Schmitz

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Simulation of x-ray optical systems is an important tool for optics design for known applications, and optic development for potential applications. Polycapillary optics are thin glass cylinders containing hundreds of thousands of hollow channels that transmit x rays using total external reflection. These optics have been developed for many applications, from beam filtering to x-ray collimating or focusing. A Monte Carlo based ray-tracing simulation was developed to model a wide range of polycapillary optic geometries. The simulation uses a vector-based approach to model all photons and optical geometries in three dimensions. Simulation verification was performed for a wide range of …

Multipacting Analysis Of The Superconducting Parallel-Bar Cavity, Subashini De Silva, Jean R. Delayen Jan 2011

Multipacting Analysis Of The Superconducting Parallel-Bar Cavity, Subashini De Silva, Jean R. Delayen

Physics Faculty Publications

The superconducting parallel-bar cavity [1] is a deflecting/crabbing cavity with attractive properties, compared to other conventional designs, that is being considered for a number of applications. Multipacting can be a limiting factor to the performance of in any superconducting structure. In the parallel-bar cavity the main contribution to the deflection is due to the transverse deflecting voltage, between the parallel bars, making the design potentially prone to multipacting. This paper presents the results of analytical calculations and numerical simulations of multipacting in the parallel-bar cavity with resonant voltage, impact energies and corresponding particle trajectories.

Meta-Analysis Of Single-Case Data: A Monte Carlo Investigation Of A Three Level Model, Corina M. Owens Jan 2011

Meta-Analysis Of Single-Case Data: A Monte Carlo Investigation Of A Three Level Model, Corina M. Owens

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Numerous ways to meta-analyze single-case data have been proposed in the literature, however, consensus on the most appropriate method has not been reached. One method that has been proposed involves multilevel modeling. This study used Monte Carlo methods to examine the appropriateness of Van den Noortgate and Onghena's (2008) raw data multilevel modeling approach to the meta-analysis of single-case data. Specifically, the study examined the fixed effects (i.e., the overall average baseline level and the overall average treatment effect) and the variance components (e.g., the between person within study variance in the average baseline level, the between study variance in …

Model-Based Analysis Of Electric Drive Options For Medium-Duty Parcel Delivery Vehicles, Robb A. Barnitt, Aaron D. Brooker, Laurie Ramroth Dec 2010

Model-Based Analysis Of Electric Drive Options For Medium-Duty Parcel Delivery Vehicles, Robb A. Barnitt, Aaron D. Brooker, Laurie Ramroth

Publications (T)

Medium-duty vehicles are used in a broad array of fleet applications, including parcel delivery. These vehicles are excellent candidates for electric drive applications due to their transient-intensive duty cycles, operation in densely populated areas, and relatively high fuel consumption and emissions. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) conducted a robust assessment of parcel delivery routes and completed a model-based techno-economic analysis of hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) configurations. First, NREL characterized parcel delivery vehicle usage patterns, most notably daily distance driven and drive-cycle intensity. Second, drive-cycle analysis results framed the selection of drive cycles used …

Estimating The Non-Existent Mean And Variance Of The F-Distribution By Simulation, Hamid Reza Kamali, Parisa Shahnazari-Shahrezaei Nov 2010

Estimating The Non-Existent Mean And Variance Of The F-Distribution By Simulation, Hamid Reza Kamali, Parisa Shahnazari-Shahrezaei

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

In theory, all moments of some probability distributions do not necessarily exist. In the other words, they may be infinite or undefined. One of these distributions is the F-distribution whose mean and variance have not been defined for the second degree of freedom less than 3 and 5, respectively. In some cases, a large statistical population having an F-distribution may exist and the aim is to obtain its mean and variance which are an estimation of the non-existent mean and variance of F-distribution. This article considers a large sample F-distribution to estimate its non-existent mean and variance using Simul8 simulation …

Empirical Geographic Modeling Of Switchgrass Yields In The United States, Henriette I. Jager, Latha M. Baskaran, Craig C. Brandt, Ethan B. Davis Sep 2010

Empirical Geographic Modeling Of Switchgrass Yields In The United States, Henriette I. Jager, Latha M. Baskaran, Craig C. Brandt, Ethan B. Davis

Dartmouth Scholarship

Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) is a perennial grass native to the United States that has been studied as a sustainable source of biomass fuel. Although many field‐scale studies have examined the potential of this grass as a bioenergy crop, these studies have not been integrated. In this study, we present an empirical model for switchgrass yield and use this model to predict yield for the conterminous United States. We added environmental covariates to assembled yield data from field trials based on geographic location. We developed empirical models based on these data. The resulting empirical models, which account for spatial …

Long-Lived Time-Dependent Remnants During Cosmological Symmetry Breaking: From Inflation To The Electroweak Scale, Marcelo Gleiser, Noah Graham, Nikitas Stamatopoulos Aug 2010

Long-Lived Time-Dependent Remnants During Cosmological Symmetry Breaking: From Inflation To The Electroweak Scale, Marcelo Gleiser, Noah Graham, Nikitas Stamatopoulos

Dartmouth Scholarship

Through a detailed numerical investigation in three spatial dimensions, we demonstrate that long-lived time-dependent field configurations emerge dynamically during symmetry breaking in an expanding de Sitter spacetime. We investigate two situations: a single scalar field with a double-well potential and an SU(2) non-Abelian Higgs model. For the single scalar, we show that large-amplitude oscillon configurations emerge spontaneously and persist to contribute about 1.2% of the energy density of the Universe. We also show that for a range of parameters, oscillon lifetimes are enhanced by the expansion and that this effect is a result of parametric resonance. For the SU(2) case, …
