Resonant photoemission in the Pu 5f and Pu 6p states is compared to that in the Gd 4f and Gd 5p states. Spectral simulations, based upon an atomic model with angular momentum coupling, are compared to the Gd and Pu results. Additional spectroscopic measurements of Pu, including core level photoemission and x-ray absorption, are also presented.

Contrary and supportive evidence has been offered on the basis of Monte Carlo methods. In this article, clarifications are given regarding what should be simulated to determine the possible effects of piecemeal publishing trivial effect sizes.

In the continuing debate over the use and utility of effect sizes, more discussion often helps to both clarify and syncretize methodological views. Here, further defense is given of Roberts & Henson (2002) in terms of measuring bias in Cohen’s d, and a rejoinder to Sawilowsky (2003) is presented.

The ability to ensure uniformity of temperature within a given finite physical region is an essential element in the success of many scientific processes, especially those that involve extreme fluctuation in temperature. Such a process is performed in an instrument called the LightTyper developed by Idaho Technology, Inc. of Salt Lake City Utah. This paper details the development and results of a scheme intended to obtain a heating design that ensures a high degree of temperature uniformity within the Idaho Technology instrument. Simulation Of Groundwater Flow In Cache Valley, Utah And Idaho, Barry Myers

A groundwater model of Cache Valley was created using MODFLOW. Steady-state calibration of the model demonstrated that recharge to the lower confined aquifer may occur along the margin of the valley that borders the Wellsville Mountains and the Bear River Range. Steady-state calibration also showed that discharge from the unconfined aquifer may occur along the eastern and western margins of the valley in both the Utah and the Idaho portions of the valley.

Incorporating the spatial structure of data from agricultural field experiments into inference procedures has become an important topic in recent years. As part of a larger project to determine whether or not reliable predictions and estimates can be obtained for sample sizes often encountered in traditional field experimentation, this paper focuses on the small sample estimation of the parameters of the exponential semivariogram model. Simulation studies were conducted for both expanding and fixed domains. Submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) is an important indicator of freshwater and marine water quality in almost all shallow water aquatic environments. Throughout the world the diversity of submerged aquatic vegetation appears to be in decline, although sufficient historical data, of sufficient quantitative quality is lacking. Hyperspectral remote sensing technology, available from low altitude aircraft sensors, may provide a basis to improve upon existing photographic regional assessments and monitoring concerned with the aerial extent and coverage of SAV. A new paradigm for programming of robotics manipulator to perform complex constrained motion tasks is being studied. The teaching of the manipulation skills to the machine starts by demonstmting those skills in a haptic -rendered virtual environment. Position and contact force and torque data generated in the virtual environment combined with a priori knowledge about the task is used to identify and learn the skills in the newly demonstrated tasks and then to reproduce them in the robotics system. The future high energy e e colliders, together with the complementary \gamma \gamma option, will offer possibilities for both discovery and precision physics. The uncertainty on the initial beam polarizations contributes to the systematic errors in each case. Therefore, it is crucial to obtain the precise beam polarizations by independent measurements. The e \gamma \rightarrow \nu W process in the e \gamma mode can be used to experimentally determine the polarization of the initial e beam. The Physical Security unit is used to illustrate the development of the online learning strategies and interactive activities. Learning materials developed for this course have unique attributes as they were specifically designed to provide simulations and interactivity in the learning process. Aerosol transport in confined spaces was studied via numerical simulation using the dynamic aerosol equation, which is Boltzmann?s transport equation at the hydrodynamic limit. Until recent years, there existed no comprehensive computational tool to predict the spatial distribution and time evolution of aerosol size spectrum. A previously developed code, INDASOL3D, solves the dynamic aerosol equation by using a homogenized control-volume based finite difference method applying the group sectional method on the coagulation dynamics. However, quantitative correctness has not been satisfactory. In this thesis, two new codes (SAEROSA, and CAEROT) were developed. SAEROSA computes the time evolution of the size spectrum …
