Irreducible K-To-1 Maps Onto Grids, Susan M. Parker

In this paper we explore the existence of exactly k-to-1 continuous functions between graphs, and more specifically 2-to-1 continuous function between graphs that are irreducibly 2-to-1, meaning that no restriction of the function to a subgraph is 2-to-l. We show how to construct such functions in some general cases, and then more specifically onto rectangular grids. We have in mind an application to distributed networks and signal verification.

"In 1920, B. Knaster and C. Kuratowski raised the question of whether each homogeneous plane continuum is a simple closed curve. In 1921, S. Mazurkiewicz raised the question of whether each subcontinuum of Euclidean n-space which is homeomorphic to each of its subcontinua is necessarily an arc. In that same year, B. Knaster and C. Kuratowski raised the question of whether there exists a nondegenerate hereditarily indecomposable continuum.

The third question was answered in the affirmative in 1922 by B. Knaster, when he constructed a nondegenerate hereditarily indecomposable subcontinuum of the plane.

The suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) in the hypothalamus serves as the pacemaker for mammalian circadian rhythms. In a hamster brain slice preparation, the authors were able to record spontaneous activity from SCN cells for up to 4 days in vitro and verify a self-sustained rhythm in firing. The phase of this rhythm was altered by the concentration of glucose in the bathing medium, with time of peak firing advanced for a 20 mM glucose condition and slightly delayed for a 5 mM glucose condition, relative to 10 mM. Previous work on feature weighting for case-based learning algorithms has tended to use either global weights or weights that vary over extremely local regions of the case space. This paper examines the use of coarsely local weighting schemes, where feature weights are allowed to vary but are identical for groups or clusters of cases. We present a new technique, called class distribution weighting (CDW), that allows weights to vary at the class level. We further extend CDW into a family of related techniques that exhibit varying degrees of locality, from global to local. The class distribution techniques are then applied …

Estimating Survival Of Song Bird Carcasses In Crops And Woodlots, George M. Linz, David L. Bergman, William J. Bleier

Estimates of non-target animal mortality due to the effects of agricultural pesticides may be biased by the removal of carcasses by scavengers. We placed intact songbird carcasses in ripening sunflower fields in late-summer, and in harvested corn fields and woodlots in early spring to assess carcass removal by scavengers. Removal curves differed among the three habitats (P < 0.001). One day after placement, 58% of carcasses persisted in the sunflower fields, whereas 82% and 90% remained in the corn fields and woodlots, respectively. Our results suggest that survival times for carcasses are variable and dependent on habitat and, perhaps seasonal factors. In most cases, searches for carcasses should be conducted within one day of the pesticide application.

The effectiveness of an alpha-chloralose (AC)-corn oil suspension, an AC-margarine mixture, and AC tablets were compared for immobilizing Canada geese (Branta canadensis). Responses to AC immobilization also were compared in male and female Canada geese. There was no difference in mean time to first effects or mean time to capture between male and female geese dosed with 30 mg/kg AC in orally-administered bread baits. Recovery times (≤24 hr) also were similar between sexes. Mean (±SE) time to first effects for geese immobilized with AC tablets in bread baits ( 19 ± 3 mm) was significantly less than mean …

This thesis examines the prehistoric, historic, and contemporary patterns of land use and their effects in the Saddle Mountains of eastern Washington. Federal laws and Indian treaties require that federal lands be managed to preserve natural and cultural resources while meeting the demands of private interests for economic development and of the general public for recreational access. Land management conflicts created by these diverse interests are reviewed in the context of the history of the study area, the legal framework that directs its management, and the management process as it actually works. The 132 pbt - 1 of data collected by ALEPH from 1991 to 1994 have been used to analyze η and ω production in τ decays. The following branching fractions have been measured: B(τ−→ντωh−)=(1.91±0.07±0.06)×10−2,B(τ−→ντωh−)=(1.91±0.07±0.06)×10−2, B(τ−→ντωh−π0)=(4.3±0.6±0.5)×10−3,B(τ−→ντωh−π0)=(4.3±0.6±0.5)×10−3, B(τ−→ντηK−)=(2.9+1.3−1.2±0.7)×10−4,B(τ−→ντηK−)=(2.9−1.2+1.3±0.7)×10−4, B(τ−→ντηh−π0)=(1.8±0.4±0.2)×10−3B(τ−→ντηh−π0)=(1.8±0.4±0.2)×10−3 and the 95% C.L. limit B(τ− → ντηπt -) t - 4 has been obtained. The ωπt- and ηπt -π0 rates and dynamics are found in agreement with the predictions made from e+e∼ - annihilation data with the help of isospin invariance (CVC).

As a consequence, temporal variations in climate will have a marked effect on the local hydrology of the Canadian Rocky Mountains, especially as glaciers, glacierettes and snow packs decrease in size or melt out. Kirby Calculus In Manifolds With Boundary, Justin Roberts

Suppose there are two framed links in a compact, connected 3-manifold (possibly with boundary, or non-orientable) such that the associated 3-manifolds obtained by surgery are homeomorphic (relative to their common boundary, if there is one.) How are the links related? Kirby's theorem gives the answer when the manifold is S^3, and Fenn and Rourke extended it to the case of any closed orientable 3-manifold, or S^1 \tilde{\times} S^2. The purpose of this note is to give the answer in the general case, using only minor modifications of Kirby's original proof.

Consider the self-intersection number [\Sigma].[\Sigma] of a 2-dimensional sphere \Sigma embedded into a K3 surface. Since a K3 surface is spin, [\Sigma].[\Sigma] is even and by Gauge theoretical arguments [\Sigma].[\Sigma]\le 0. No other restriction on [\Sigma].[\Sigma] is known. It is a problem 4.105(D) from the Kirby list \cite{K} to determine the possible values of [\Sigma].[\Sigma]. This paper shows that the even numbers between 0 and -86 do appear as [\Sigma].[\Sigma].

The Hardy -Littlewood-Sobolev Inequality For Non-Isotropic Riesz Potentials, İnan Çinar

In this study the inequality of Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev type are established for non-isotropic generalized Riesz potential depending on \lambda -distance. In this paper we establish analogues of the well known Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequality (see[3]) for Riesz potentials with non-isotropic kernel depended on \lambda distance. Note that different problems for convolution type integrals with kernels, depending on \lambda-distance were considered in [1] and [2].

In this paper, the concepts concerning the space curves of constant breadth were extended to E^4 -space. The integral of third curvature of the curve was obtained as (bak) \sigmads = 2k7\pi(k E Z) . In addition, the relation (bak) g(\kappa, \tau, \sigma)ds = O was obtained between the curvatures of curves of constant breadth in E^4 . On A Generalisation Of Lie Ideals In Prime Rings, Arif Kaya

Let R be a prime ring of characteristic 3, \sigma and \tau automorphisms of R, U a non zero ( \sigma, \tau) - Lie ideal of R, d a nonzero derivation of R such that \sigmad = d\sigma , \taud = d\tau,d(U) (bak) U, and d^2(U) (bak) Z, the center of R. Then we prove that U (bak) Z. This provides a proof of the Theorem in [4], when char R = 3.

In this paper we consider the class \SigmaS*{_o,c} ( \alpha ) consisting of meromorphically starlike univalent functions with positive coefficients and fixed second coefficients. The object of the present paper is to show coefficient estimates and closure theorems for this class. Also, we obtain the radius of convexity for functions belonging to the class \SigmaS*{_o,c} ( \alpha ).
