Kilometer-scale variations in ice velocity and surface topography are used to investigate the style of glacier deformation in the main body of Ice Stream B, West Antarctica. The pattern is very different from that reported for other glaciers. For the 250 km2 area studied on Ice Stream B, most of the observed deformation occurs within two narrow bands, in which there is large across-flow compression and slow lateral shearing. The bands underlie valleys in the ice-surface topography. Measured upward displacement of ice adjacent to the rapidly compressing bands appears to be linked to the creation of the ice stream's topography. …

Field trials in Kenya demonstrated that the forage grass, Sorghum vulgäre sudanense (Sudan grass) attracted greater oviposition by stemborers than cultivated maize, resulting in significant increase in maize yield. On the other hand, the non-host forage plant, Melinis minutiflora (molasses grass), when inter-cropped with maize, repelled gravid stemborer females from ovipositing on maize, resulting in significant reduction in stemborer infestation. Using these trap- and repellent gramineous plants, a novel pest management approach based on a 'push-pull' or stimulo-deterrent diversionary strategy is being developed where stemborers are repelled from the food crop and are simultaneously attracted to a discard or trap …

We introduce a prewrite operation before a write operation is performed on design databases, a database that consists of objects as engineering designs. A prewrite operation does not actually make a design but it only makes available the model of the design that the transaction will produce in future. Once the prewrite design by a transaction is announced, the transaction executes a pre-commit operation. After the pre-commit, read operations can access the prewrite design even before the pre-committed transaction has finally made the design and committed. We present a concurrency control algorithm for an open and safe nested transaction model. We use prewrite operations in our model to increase the concurrency. Prewrite operations are modeled as subtransactions in the nested transaction tree. The subtransaction which initiates prewrite subtransactions are modelled as recovery point subtransaction. The recovery point subtransaction can release their locks before its ancestors commit. Thus, our model increases the concurrency in comparison to other nested transaction models. The complete subcube recognition problem is defined as, given a collection of available processors on an n-dimensional hypercube, locate a subcube of dimension k that consists entirely of available processors, if one exists. Despite many algorithms proposed so far on this subject, improving the time complexity of this problem remains a challenge. Efficiency limits that can be reached have not been exhausted yet. Theanine is the main amino acid component in tea. It usually constitutes between 1 and 2% of the dry weight of the tea leaves. It is as prevalent in tea as all other free amino acids combined. Both enantiomers of theanine were found to have a similar sweet taste, with little or no aftertaste. It was found that black and half-green teas (except for Formosa Oolong) contained as much, or more, theanine as green teas. No correlation was found between the absolute concentration of theanine in tea and its enantiomeric composition. An inverse correlation was found between certain grades of …

CD40 is a molecule present on multiple cell types including B lymphocyte lineage cells. CD40 has been shown to play an important role in B cell differentiation and activation in vitro, although little is known concerning the effects of CD40 stimulation in vivo. We therefore examined the effects of CD40 stimulation in mice using a syngeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT) model in an effort to augment B cell recovery after high dose therapy with hematopoietic reconstitution. After the BMT, mice were treated with or without 2-6 μg of a soluble recombinant murine CD40 ligand (srmCD40L) given intraperitoneally twice a week. …

The present study examined how different communication patterns affected task performance with an adaptive interface. A Wizard-of-Oz simulation (Gould, Conti, & Hovanyecz, 1983) was used to create the impression of a talking and listening computer that acted as a teammate to help participants interact with a computer application.

Four levels of communication mode were used which differed in the level of restriction placed on human-computer communication. In addition, participants completed two sets of tasks (simple and complex). Naturally occurring viruses are very abundant in fresh, estuarine, and marine waters, with densities on the order of 10⁵-10⁸ viruses ml^-1. Research has focused on virus effects on bacteria, cyanobacteria, and phytoplankton, as well as mechanisms of virus production and decay. However, little is known about the distribution of viruses in benthic environments or virus effects on organisms in higher trophic levels.
