Succession In A Dune Community At Mentor Headlands, Ohio, Harold G. Marshall

Continual sand deposition on the Lake Erie shore, adjacent to the mouth of the Grand River, has led to the formation of a developing sand dune community and through the years a successional pattern of plant growth. An analysis was made of the general plant composition of the area by means of four transects directed from the bare beach inland. Definite zonation of specific plant species was present throughout the community in parallel formation. Named for the dominant plant types they contained, the major stages were: dune grass, poplar, aspen, and oak.

However, the farmer has a very great responsibility to make the best use of the rain he gets, and if he gets too much, to see that the excess can flow down to the rivers without causing damage.

An Index To The Literature On Digenetic Trematodes From Fishes, Richard William Bond

The primary purpose of this compilation is to facilitate for pertinent literature in the searches involving digenetic trematodes from fines. The index may be used by the investigator to determine what, Af any, 14torature has appeared concerning the animal or group of animals with which he is working; and the literature is cross-indexed in such a way that it may be approached from the various angles commonly used in trematodes investigations. There are included, for example, an index to hosts, an index to larval stages of development and a partial geographic index to adult trematodes of fishes.

Geological Survey Circular 346: First Fourteen Years Of Lake Mead, Harold E. Thomas

This circular summarizes the results of recent studies of Lake Mead and its environs. Area-capacity tables, prepared on the basis of a hydrographic survey of the lake in 1948-49, show that the capacity of the reservoir was reduced 4. 9 percent during the first 14 years after Hoover Dam was completed, but the usable capacity was reduced only 3.2 percent. Practically all of this reduction was caused by accumulation of sediment in the reservoir. Studies of inflow and outflow indicate that the reservoir has a total storage capacity about 12 percent greater than that shown by the area-capacity table, because …

This report is based on current investigations of the groundwater resources of the Republican and Frenchman River Valleys in Nebraska and includes data gathered to December 31, 1947. These studies vere started late in 1945 as a part of a program of groundwater investigations now in progress in connection with the Missouri River basin development plan. Studies to date have consisted principally of periodic observations of water table fluctuations at selected observation wells, of collection of samples of groundwater for chemical analysis, and of collection of data concerning the municipal water supplies in the valley. The rock formations of the earth are great natural reservoirs in which a part of the water derived from rain and snow is stored. Water levels and artesian pressure in wells register the stages of these natural reservoirs. The changes in water levels or artesian pressure are indicative of the depletion or replenishment of the natural reservoirs. Systematic and periodic measurements of water levels and artesian pressure in wells have been made in Nevada, by State and Federal agencies from time to time.
