A Solar-Hydrogen Energy Conversion Scheme For Agricultural Use, R. L. Reisbig, Jack L. Boone, Gordon E. Weiss, Thomas Van Doren Apr 1974

A Solar-Hydrogen Energy Conversion Scheme For Agricultural Use, R. L. Reisbig, Jack L. Boone, Gordon E. Weiss, Thomas Van Doren

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

A solar energy activated system is presented which can produce hydrogen and hydrogen-derived fuels (methanol) for use on farms. The device, named "solar-kine", also can produce fertilizer (anhydrous ammonia) as a byproduct of the hydrogen. A cost analysis shows that solar-kine may be mass-producible and sold to farmers for between $7,200 and $14,700. This is equivalent to giving the fanner energy at a price of $1.79 to $3.66 per million BTU's (in 1974 dollars). Presently (Spring, 1974) regular gasoline used in tractors at 43¢ per gallon, represents a cost to the farmer of $3.77 per million BTU's. As oil-based fuels …

Multiregional Interactions Between Energy And Transportation, Karen R. Polenske Apr 1974

Multiregional Interactions Between Energy And Transportation, Karen R. Polenske

Applications

Because of the number and complexity of the issues that will determine the use of coal by the electric-generating plants, an important asset of policy makers will be the availability of a method of analysis that allows for quick studies of many different combinations of assumptions and policies. The present prototype study is designed to show how the multiregional input-output model can be used to investigate each different assumption and policy alternative. For this paper, the analysis has necessarily been restricted to two issues. First, the results of using regional rather than national technologies in the model are assessed. This …

History Of So2 Removal System At The Meramec Plant Of Union Electric, Gerald E. Dreifke, John F. Mclaughlin, Jerrel D. Smith Jan 1974

History Of So2 Removal System At The Meramec Plant Of Union Electric, Gerald E. Dreifke, John F. Mclaughlin, Jerrel D. Smith

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

In line with the then emerging air pollution control regulations Union Electric installed a limestone injection wet scrubber sulfur dioxide removal system on an intermediate size coal-fired utility boiler at its Meramec Power Plant on an experimental basis in September, 1968. During approximately 3 years of operation many difficulties were encountered with plugging and scaling of various system components by calcium sulphate. As a result of this experience along with related experiences by other utilities employing similar systems, the experiment was terminated in June, 1971.

As a result of the experiences gained, however, second generation experiments in sulfur dioxide removal …

Digital Computer Solution Of Electromagnetic Transients In Large Power Systems, Bijan Navidbakhsh May 1973

Digital Computer Solution Of Electromagnetic Transients In Large Power Systems, Bijan Navidbakhsh

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis is an introduction to the solution of electromagnetic transients by a combination of the Bergeran method of characteristics and the application of trapezoidal rule of integration.

Three test examples solved by digital computer illustrate the step by step solution and computer programming.

To compare this method with the Laplace transformation technique, a test problem solved by both methods and also digital computer is illustrated. In conclusion, the advantages and disadvantages of both methods are compared.

A Study Of The Dickey-Lincoln Hydroelectric Project And Its Impact On The Resources Of The Upper Saint John River Valley, Rosemary M. Manning, Sierra Club, New England Chapter Jan 1973

A Study Of The Dickey-Lincoln Hydroelectric Project And Its Impact On The Resources Of The Upper Saint John River Valley, Rosemary M. Manning, Sierra Club, New England Chapter

Dickey-Lincoln School Lakes Project

This report was under-taken primarily to evaluate the impact that the construction of the Dickey-Lincoln project would have upon the resources of the Upper St. John River, and to examine the assertion that the Dickey-Lincoln project constitutes a wise use of the public's environmental and economic resources. Since the case that has been made for the construction of the Dickey-Lincoln project rest primarily on the justification of the project in economic terms, this aspect of the project proposal will be intensively explored.

Reducing Uncertainty, Richard C. Heyser Jul 1972

Reducing Uncertainty, Richard C. Heyser

Unpublished Writings

Intended for audio engineers, Richard C. Heyser meant for this paper to bring attention to the misapplication of the theoretical concept, the Uncertainty Principle. Heyser argues that this concept has been "freely applied without regard to the errors which may result due to lack of understanding of its derivation."

Dickey-Lincoln School Lakes Project

The intention of this report is to present a still picture of the selected area as of the summer of 1966. The emphasis is on empirical relationships. The data contained herein will provide a base for subsequent analysis. Thus little attempt is made to cast the findings of the study in a theoretical framework. Later publications will utilize relevant theory and research to analyze the social and economic changes in an area related to the building of the Dickey and Lincoln School Dams. It is presumed that this particular report and its statistical sup-plement will be of particular interest to …

Water Resources Of Tacoma, Washington, Richard Martin Glaser Jul 1967

Water Resources Of Tacoma, Washington, Richard Martin Glaser

Graduate Student Research Papers

This study explores the fresh water and hydroelectricity resources of the City of Tacoma, Washington. The history and development of the water supply and hydroelectric facilities is examined. One can see that the development of the water resources has been directly affected by the growth in population and industry and that the nearness to the city of development sites has been an aid in this development. With the amount of water available at present and the increase in hydro-electric facilities during this decade, the future outlook for Tacoma in the field of water resources seems bright.

Dickey-Lincoln School Lakes Project

This section I is the first of four sections comprising Design Memo-randum No. 2. The other sections are: II - Dickey Dam - Spillway Design Flood, III - Lincoln School Dam - Spillway Design Flood and IV - Flood Analysis and Reservoir Regulation. la section I, hydro-logic studies will be confined generally to the drainage area of the Saint John River above the gaging station at Fort Kent, Maine. The purpose of section I is to present the climatological and streamflow data for the Saint John River above Fort Kent in order to establish hydrologic criteria for the design of …

Transistorized Circuits For Telemetry, Dominick Misciascio Jr. Jun 1963

Transistorized Circuits For Telemetry, Dominick Misciascio Jr.

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

This thesis is concerned with the telemetry of small DC signals from photomultiplier tubes. The circuitry must have a high input impedance so as not to load down the photomultiplier tube and a low output impedance which is capable of controlling the current through a small incandescent bulb. This bulb is used to illuminate a photoresistor. The output of the circuit consists of a variation of the resistance of the photoresistor. This variable resistance is conventionally converted into a variable audio frequency which is transmitted to the receiving station on a radio-frequency carrier. The output resistance must be independent of …

An Experimental Study Of The Cathode Fall In Helium And Argon With Wire Cathodes, L. G. Raub Jan 1921

An Experimental Study Of The Cathode Fall In Helium And Argon With Wire Cathodes, L. G. Raub

Papers from the University Studies series (University of Nebraska)

It was recognized rather early in the study of the phenomena of discharge of electricity through gases that the ordinary laws of conduction as found in solid and liquid conductors are not applicable to gases. It was shown by Zeleny and independently by Child that Ohm's law by no means represents the distribution of potential between electrodes in an ionized gas, but that the potential gradient is large in the vicinity of the electrodes, and not uniform throughout the space between them. When the pressure of the gas surrounding the electrodes is reduced to one or two millimeters and a …
