Only a casual perusal of the literature treating of enzymes impresses one with the importance of the subject. How could the process of digestion be carried on without the action of enzymes? The tanning industry is primarily concerned with so-called bates, which are enzymes. Other industrial ope.rations, such as brewing, the manufacture of glue, petroleum refining, the production of rubber and starch, are likewise largely dependent on enzymatic action. Another phase of enzyme activity turns to the prevention of disease and medical diagnosis.

In the oil and fat industry the iodine value is one of the most important criteria in testing for the purity of the substance at hand. According to the amount of iodine absorbed fats are classified as drying, semi-drying, and non-drying oils. If the respective oil possesses and iodine value lying between 130 and 200, it is considered a drying oil; between 95 and 130, a semi-drying oil, and between 1 and 95, a non-drying oil.

This work was begun in an attempt to study further the preparation of thianthrene from 2-dichlorobenzene and alkali sulfides. g_-Dichlorobenzene is a liquid by-product in the preparation of its solid isomer, E-dichlorobenzene, which is used extensively for controlling moths and peach tree borers. The study of the preparation of thianthrene from the liquid isomer was undertaken because the preparation might develop into a possible use for the large quantities available.

In a previous investigation carried out in these laboratories, Moxon and Franks (1), have shown the toxicity of sodium salts of selenium, vanadium, arsenic and tellurium toward the production of carbon dioxide during yeast fermentation of glucose. The toxicity of the salts occurred in the order given. In the same investigation (1), it was shown that sodium sulfide and sodium sulfite exert an accelerating effect.

Being interested in both the chemical and biological fields, the subject of glucuronic acid made a strong appeal. Although glucuronic acid was discovered over fifty years ago, its position in physiology remained until recently undefined. Now, however, it seems fairly certain that this compound is closely related to carbohydrate metabolism and plays an im­portant role as a detoxicating agent in the body.

Summary

The Friedel-Crafts reaction has been used in the preparation of thiophene ketones, some of which were hitherto unknown. Certain limitations of the reaction have been noted.

The mercuration of thiophene ketones has been systematically investigated for the first time. Many new halogen derivatives of benzothienone have been synthesized. These were employed in the elucidation of the structure of a complex mercurial· derived from this ketone.

A new modification of an old reaction has been developed whereby benzothienone can be mercurated quickly and almost quantitatively. Interesting derivatives of this little known ketone have been synthesized. Chief among these are the …

Distribution of population in State. The estimated population for the State of New Mexico for the year 1930 was 423,300. A close observation of the population centers shows them to be scattered over a wide range of territory. The largest city, Albuquerque, has approximately 26,000 citizens.
