"Sodium thiosulfate was one of the pioneer reagents used in photography, and is still the most important reagent used in photographic fixing. The solubility of the silver halides in an excess of sodium thiosulfate makes it important as a reagent for removing the undeveloped silver halides from the film. The life of a fixing bath is controlled by the halogen content. As the ratio of halogens to sodium thiosulfate is increased, the time required for fixing is also increased until the ratio reaches such a point that fogging of the film results. At present the chemical literature offers no method for the preparation of diphenylthiocarbazone, or dithizone, sufficiently detailed to guide the average laboratory technician in an economical and successful preparation of this compound. The high price of dithizone and the limited number of dispensers of it emphasize the need of such a method. The original research reported in this thesis was done primarily in an attempt to formulate a satisfactory detailed method for the preparation of dithizone. Cereal grains were known to be notably deficient in the anti-rachitic principle even before the discovery of vitamin D. Clinicians had associated a type of rickets of infancy, characterized by an over-weight, flabby, bowlegged condition, with a diet consisting mainly of cereals. Mellanby (1) in 1921 concluded that this type of rickets is induced by overfeeding with carbohydrates. He also showed in the same report, however, that oatmeal, although it contains less carbohydrates than the other grains tested, possesses a special tendency toward rachitogenesis.

The fact that characteristic crystalline products result upon the diffusion of arsenate ions into silicic acid gel which has been impregnated with stannous ions has been known by the Pacific Chemistry Department for some time. The optimum conditions with regards to heat and hydrogen ion concentration have been determined. The purpose of this investigation was to study the products of the reaction. First to determine whether or not the silicic acid itself combined with the stannous and arsenate. ions in the formation of the crystalline product, and second to determine its chemical composition.
