An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of feeding rice distillers dried grains with solubles (rDDGS) and rice gluten meal (RGM) combination with enzyme supplementation on the production performance of broiler chickens. The experimental diets consisted of the following: T1 (no rDDGS/RGM/enzyme), T2 (no rDDGS/RGM, multienzyme), T3 (12.5% rDDGS, 15.0% RGM, no enzyme), T4 (12.5% rDDGS, 15.0% RGM, protease enzyme), T5 (10.0% rDDGS, 12.5% RGM, no enzyme), and T6 (10.0% rDDGS, 12.5% RGM, protease enzyme). GDF9 is an essential gene for normal follicular development and prolificacy in sheep. The aim of this study was to determine the genetic polymorphism and G1 mutation of GDF9 gene exon 1 in 100 Karayaka ewes, belonging to four subpopulations in the Black Sea Region provinces of Turkey. Based on DNA sequence results, two alleles (A and G) and two genotypes (GG and GA) were determined with the restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of PCR-amplified fragments (PCR-RFLP) method. Although pigeons are reared for recreational purposes in Jammu region, disease occurrence is sparsely documented. Based on clinical signs, lesions and laboratory investigation, approximately 600 out of 4000 (15%) domestic pigeons were found to be disease affected. Necropsy of 60 birds was conducted to determine the cause of death. Haemoproteus columbae demonstrated within erythrocytes and various development stages in tissue and endothelial schizogony caused majority deaths due to pneumonia and hepatitis (45%) accompanied by severe vascular and tissue reaction. The present study was aimed to evaluate the influence of incandescent, fluorescent, and light emitting diode (LED) lights on the productive efficiency and economic aspects of laying hens. Ocular sonography and echobiometry was performed in local nondescript sheep (N = 36) of different age group and in adult corriedale (N = 60), crossbred Fec B (N = 48), and Poll Dorset cross breed sheep (N = 48). Cornea, anterior, posterior lens capsule, and retinal rim appeared hyperechoic whereas aqueous, vitreous humor, and nucleus of lens were anechoic. Significant increase (P < 0.05) in all the echobiometric measurement of the ocular distance except central corneal thickness and retinal rim thickness was recorded in the older animals (2 year old) compared to values recorded in animals at one month of age in local nondescript sheep. Significant differences (P < 0.05) in few recorded ocular biometric measurements were also noticed among different sheep breeds. However, the difference in the various ocular biometric measurements between the right and left eyes was nonsignificant. The results of this study provide the base line information regarding the ocular echobiometry in sheep that are relevant to comparative ocular anatomy and can be useful for ultrasonographic evaluation of different ocular affections in sheep.

This study was conducted to assess the effect of dried tomato pomace (DTP) feeding on the carcass characteristics and the quality of the meat of growing rabbits. For this purpose, 54 weaned rabbits (40 days old) were divided into three equal groups and fed isoproteic and isoenergetic diets. As for indicators of environmental pollution, we detected blood heavy metal levels in 32 female and 32 male local Feral pigeons in the central districts of Şanlıurfa, located in southeastern Turkey, in one month of each season. This study aimed to determine the morphological and morphometric characteristics of Alabadem pigeons, which are grown as ornamental pigeons in Edirne province, and to determine mutual traits with other indigenous pigeon breeds in Turkey by comparing with previous studies. Body weight (P < 0.001), head length (P < 0.01), head width (P < 0.05), beak length (P < 0.001), and tarsus diameter (P < 0.05) of age group III were higher than those of other age groups; however, the wingspan of age group II was greater than that of other age groups in Alabadem pigeon. Compared to other indigenous genotypes in Turkey, the Alabadem pigeon is a small-sized genotype. Alabadem pigeons were similar to Edremit butterfly pigeons and Thracian tumbler pigeons in terms of crested and blackeyed pigeons. On the other hand, the irregularly shaped mark (almond) on the head in Alabadem pigeons was similar to the wide-long irregular shaped mark on the neck of Edremit butterfly pigeons. Some basic plumage colors (black, yellow, and red) and intermediate colors (chickpea and scarlet) were identical to Alabadem pigeons and Thrace roller pigeons. Since Alabadem pigeons have many mutual characteristics with Edremit butterfly pigeons and Thracian roller pigeons, genetic studies may be recommended to determine the degree of relationship among these breeds.

In this study, transition period cows were used to test the hypothesis that serum levels of leptin and thyroid hormones would correlate the production efficiency such as milk yield, body condition score, and fertility in dairy cows raised under the same controlled conditions. The study comprised 37 Simmental cows, which were 3 years old and between 257-265 days of gestation. Serum levels of leptin, T3, T4, FT3, and FT4 hormones were measured in blood samples obtained from the animals, which were in the period of 3 weeks before and 3 weeks after delivery. Prepartum serum leptin levels were significantly (p < 0.05) lower in cows having increased milk production compared to the first lactation peak value. Also, postpartum serum FT3 levels were significantly (p < 0.05) lower in cows having milk yield of ≥ 30 kg. Leptin levels were found to be inversely related with milk production and fertility. FT3 levels exhibited a negative correlation with milk production and similarly T3 levels showed an inverse correlation with body condition score. The present study proposed that routine monitoring of leptin and thyroid hormones would be useful for the reproductive management of cows with breeding problems.

This study was carried out to investigate the associations between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in the growth hormone receptor (GHR) gene and growth and milk yields of Anatolian buffaloes. Growth records of genotyped 3012 Anatolian buffaloes and 467 lactations of 329 cows from them were used. The overall means of weights at birth, six and 12 months of ages and lactation milk yield were 29.377 ± 0.342 kg, 96.15 ± 1.48 kg, 165.54 ± 2.18 kg, and 976.3 ± 39.9 kg, respectively. Double-crested cormorant Phalacrocorox auritus Lesson (cormorant) populations have increased throughout the Great Lakes region of North America causing concern related to the impact of cormorant predation on fish communities. A recent decline in yellow perch Perca flavescens (Mitchill) abundance within the Lake Winnebago System, Wisconsin, USA, prompted an assessment of cormorant diets to evaluate potential effects of cormorant predation on the sportfish community. Diets were collected from 883 cormorants (417 from Lake Winnebago and 466 from Lake Butte des Morts) between 2015 and 2017. Carbon catabolite repression (CCR) is a common mechanism pathogenic bacteria use to link central metabolism with virulence factor synthesis. In gram‐positive bacteria, catabolite control protein A (CcpA) and the histidine‐containing phosphocarrier protein HPr (encoded by ptsH) are the predominant mediators of CCR. In addition to modulating CcpA activity, HPr is essential for glucose import via the phosphotransferase system. While the regulatory functions of CcpA in Staphylococcus aureus are largely known, little is known about the function of HPr in CCR and infectivity. The discovery of interleukin (IL)-10 more than 30 years ago marked the beginning of our understanding of how cytokines regulate immune responses, based on cross-regulation between T helper (Th)1 and Th2 cytokines. Although multiple cell types were shown to produce IL-10, its identity as a Th2 cytokine remained strong since it was rigidly associated with Th2 clones in mice, whereas both Th1 and Th2 clones could secrete IL-10 in humans. Conservation and management efforts have resulted in population increases and range expansions for some apex predators, potentially changing trophic cascades and foraging behavior. Changes in sympatric carnivore and dominant scavenger populations provide opportunities to assess how carnivores affect one another. Cougars (Puma concolor) were the apex predator in the Great Basin of Nevada, USA, for over 80 years. Black bears (Ursus americanus) have recently recolonized the area and are known to heavily scavenge on cougar kills. Decades after its discovery, the infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) still poses significant risks in poultry industry, due to its immunosuppressive effect on afflicted animals. This study aims to determine the different genotypes of IBDV that are present in the country, through molecular characterization and phylogenetic analysis of the VP2 hypervariable domain of infectious bursal disease virus. The wound healing properties of saltwater crocodile blood (Crocodylus porosus) plasma was assessed by topical administration on skin incision wounds of male ICR mice. Thirty male ICR mice were divided among three treatments namely 0.9% NSS, povidone-iodine solution, and saltwater crocodile blood plasma. Macroscopic and microscopic changes on the wound were evaluated on days 7, 14, and 21. Hyperemia and wound elevation were observed on all treatments and plasma group showed that hyperemia and wound elevation resolved faster when treated with saltwater crocodile blood plasma compared to povidone-iodine.
