Little research has investigated the benefits of implementing technological devices in at-home environments for those with intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD). Assistive technology has the capability to increase resident’s self-determination, communication, and overall independence in completing everyday tasks. This study explored the effects of training/education on the ongoing use of technology within the living space of those with IDD. The methodology for this study included a 2-part series of modules to teach direct care workers how to use and support their residents in using Amazon Alexa Show devices, Amazon Alexa Dot Devices, smart lights, and smart doorbells. The series included …

Promoting Academic And Social Well-Being For Young Adults With Asd Towards Post-Secondary Education And Employment, Theresa Holcomb, Pam Kasyan-Howe, Kristin Domville
Summer 2024 OTD Capstone Symposium
This program and policy-type capstone addresses the gap in inclusive services for young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in post-secondary education (PSE). It resulted in developing and implementing a Social Engagement program designed to enhance communication skills, self-advocacy, and workplace preparedness—key factors for academic and vocational success. Guided by the Occupational Adaptation Model (OAM) and the Person-Environment-Occupation-Performance (PEOP) model, the program used a board game-based format to facilitate interactive learning and the practical application of social skills. Targeting young adults with ASD involved in vocational training, the program emphasized developing professional communication and workplace social interaction. The findings indicate …

Stigma is a serious issue affecting the lives of persons who experience homelessness and use substances. It influences every aspect of their daily lives including where they exist in public places, where they can live following homelessness, and access to housing, employment, and other opportunities that would enable thriving. In this report, we present the findings of two distinct studies which explore the experiences of administering or participating in two initiatives aimed at mitigating the stigma of homelessness in the lives of individuals who experience homelessness and use substances in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. These two initiatives were designed and led …

Performance Fatigability And Neuromuscular Responses During And After One Set Of Forearm Flexion Muscle Actions To Failure At 30% Versus 70% One-Repetition Maximum In Men And Women, Tyler Joseph Neltner
Performance Fatigability And Neuromuscular Responses During And After One Set Of Forearm Flexion Muscle Actions To Failure At 30% Versus 70% One-Repetition Maximum In Men And Women, Tyler Joseph Neltner
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Previous studies have examined sex differences in performance fatigability during isometric, isokinetic and controlled dynamic constant external resistance (DCER) fatiguing tasks (FT), however, whether those sex differences remain during maximal intended velocity (MIV) DCER muscle actions remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to examine the sex-related differences in the time course of fatigue, neuromuscular responses, and coactivation from the ipsilateral and contralateral limbs during MIV DCER muscle actions to failure at low versus high relative loads, as well as performance fatigability from pre- to post-testing. Twenty-seven college-aged men (n = 14) and women (n = 13) …

This article aims to evaluate the Effectiveness of Blood Flow Restriction Exercise in Improving Quadriceps Strength in Patients with ACL Reconstruction. This project is a literature study in narrative form. The background for conducting this research is the high incidence of ACL tears, ranging from 78 to 81 cases per 100,000 population worldwide in a year. The most common surgical treatment provided is ACL reconstruction. Quadriceps strength reduction after 6 months post-operation reaches 20% compared to pre-operation. From the symptoms and clinical complaints of quadriceps muscle weakness, one of the interventions that can be performed is Blood Flow Restriction …
Posture And Injury Prevention Program For High School Musicians, Clifford C. Scott, Cassandra Nelson
Posture And Injury Prevention Program For High School Musicians, Clifford C. Scott, Cassandra Nelson
Summer 2024 OTD Capstone Symposium
Musicians face many musculoskeletal-related injuries due to overuse and repetitive motions (Gembris et al., 2020). These injuries can be mitigated by addressing posture as well as methods to prevent injuries and promote healthier playing. The proposed capstone program is occupationally based and developed to address posture and prevent musculoskeletal injuries among musicians. Occupational therapy can help musicians prevent and treat the development of postural asymmetries and musculoskeletal injuries that inhibit occupational participation and performance in playing their instruments (Ting et al., 2019).
The Role Of Occupational Therapy On Sexuality And Intimacy In Women With Disabilities, Diamond Escobedo, Cassandra Nelson
The Role Of Occupational Therapy On Sexuality And Intimacy In Women With Disabilities, Diamond Escobedo, Cassandra Nelson
Summer 2024 OTD Capstone Symposium
This project was developed to provide an educational program to spread advocacy and education about the stigmatization of women with disabilities, who are unable to interact in sexual relationships and intimacy. The occupational therapy perspective would be identified as solving the problem by providing education, resources, and adaptive devices to individuals who have a disability and experience deficits in sexual intimacy through the implementation of a program.

An Occupational Therapy Guide To Promoting Social And Emotional Health Among Youth In A Post Covid-19 Era, Alejandra Olvera, Jazminne Orozco Arteaga
Summer 2024 OTD Capstone Symposium
The COVID-19 pandemic has contributed to a significant rise in mental health challenges among children and adolescents, impacting their daily performance and overall well-being. These psychosocial effects underscore an urgent need for comprehensive support from educators, parents, and communities to effectively address the increasing mental and behavioral health issues among young individuals.
The purpose of this project was to implement a program that would improve the social and emotional health of youth and adolescents, as well as to educate educators and parents. By fostering resilience and promoting mental well-being among youth and adolescents, the program's initiatives seek to mitigate the …
