He Repercussions Of Childhood Trauma On Posttraumatic Stress: The Mediating Effects Of Dissociation And Emotion Dysregulation, Jessica A. Ward
ETD Archive
The present study explored the mediating effects of dissociation and emotion dysregulation on the relationship between different types of childhood trauma and symptoms of posttraumatic stress. Participants were 181 undergraduate students at Cleveland State University, who competed measures of childhood trauma (emotional abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse, and general trauma), posttraumatic stress symptoms, dissociation, and emotion dysregulation. Multiple mediation analyses were conducted to examine the model proposed in this study. The results of this study revealed that all trauma types significantly predicted adulthood posttraumatic stress. The relationship between emotional abuse and posttraumatic stress was mediated through both dissociation and emotion …
How The Illness Experience Predicts Key Psychosocial Outcomes In Veterans With Brain Injury, Carmen M. Tyler
How The Illness Experience Predicts Key Psychosocial Outcomes In Veterans With Brain Injury, Carmen M. Tyler
ETD Archive
The object of this thesis was to examine the illness experience of veterans who have suffered either a stroke or traumatic brain injury. Predictors of key psychosocial outcomes were identified by looking at the illness experience through the veterans’ perspective via self-report measures. Results confirmed relationships between the stressors role captivity, low self-esteem, decreased socialization, and dyad relationship strain and the outcome of depression and between the stressors physical strain and emotional strain and the outcome social/recreational participation for this population. More importantly, role captivity, social/recreational strain, and self-esteem uniquely predicted depression, and both physical and emotional strain uniquely predicted …

Title Examination Of Somatic Symptomatology Using The Cleveland Adaptive Personality Inventory And The Dimensional Somatic Questionnaire, Elizabeth Kisela
ETD Archive
This study was designed to assess the reliability and validity of the Cleveland Adaptive Personality Inventory (CAPI) and the Dimensional Somatic Questionnaire (DSQ) on the chronic pain population, depression population, and healthy control population. A total of 178 chronic pain participants, 208 depression participants, and 220 healthy control participants were collected, though not all were used for analysis due to missing data. Each participant was administered an online version of the CAPI with the Dimensional Somatic Questionnaire. Both questionnaires were significantly shortened during or prior to analysis. The questionnaires were shortened to make them more practical for use in the …
Why Be Moral? Moral Identity Motivation And Age, Tobias Krettenauer, Rosemary Victor
Why Be Moral? Moral Identity Motivation And Age, Tobias Krettenauer, Rosemary Victor
Psychology Faculty Publications
Moral identity research up to date has largely failed to provide evidence for developmental trends in moral identity presumably because of restrictions in the age range of studies and the use of moral identity measures that are insensitive to age-related change. The present study investigated moral identity motivation across a broad age range (14-65 years, N = 252, M = 33.48 years) using a modified version of the Good-Self Assessment Interview (Arnold, 1993). Individuals' moral identity motivation was coded and categorized as external, internal or relationship-oriented. It was found that with age external moral identity motivation decreased, whereas internal moral …

Burnout Or Depression: Both Individual And Social Issue, Renzo Bianchi, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, Éric Laurent
Burnout Or Depression: Both Individual And Social Issue, Renzo Bianchi, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, Éric Laurent
Publications and Research
In view of the profound problems attached to the construct of burnout, we recommended in our that occupational health specialists focus on (job-related) depression rather than burnout to help workers more effectively. The phenomena of interest (burnout or depression) should not be confused with the perspectives (individual or social) adopted to elucidate those phenomena. Both burnout and depression are best explained through the interaction of social or external conditions with individual or internal dispositions.

P1: Adjacent-Letter Flanking Bigrams Affect Lexical Decision Performance, Nicole M. Russo, Lea G. Araya
Undergraduate Research Posters 2017
In a lexical decision task in which target strings were flanked by pairs of bigrams, Grainger, Mathot, and Vitu (Acta Psychologica, 2014) found, for words, better performance when flanking bigrams contained target-string letters (e.g., BI BIRD RD; RD BIRD BI; IB BIRD DR; DR BIRD IB) than when they did not (e.g., CE BIRD NT); better performance when flanking bigrams contained letters ordered as in the target (e.g., BI BIRD RD; RD BIRD BI) than switched (e.g., IB BIRD DR; DR BIRD IB); and that only letter order within bigrams—not bigram order relative to the respective target—affected performance. Palinski (CSU …

Loss of control –inflight (LOC-I) has historically represented the largest category of commercial aviation fatal accidents. A review of worldwide transport airplane accidents (2001-2010) indicated that loss of airplane state awareness (ASA) was responsible for the majority of the LOC-I fatality rate. The Commercial Aviation Safety Team (CAST) ASA study identified12 major themes that were indicated across the ASA accident and incident events. One of the themes was crew distractionorineffective attention management, which was found to be involved in all 18 events including flight crew channelized attention, startle/surprise, diverted attention, and/or confirmation bias. Safety Enhancement(SE)-211, “Training for Attention Management” was …

Interviews Of General Aviation Pilots: An Insight To Airspace Infringements, Elena Psylou, Arnab Majumdar, Washington Ochieng
International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2017
This paper findscontributory factors to airspace infringements concerning the planning undertaken bygeneral aviation pilots. Twenty seven recreational pilots who flew a light fixed-wing motor, glider and ultralight aircraft were interviewed using semi-structured interviews in Finland, Norway and United Kingdom. These countries experienced a major problem with the number of reported AIs. Interview transcripts were analysed using thematic analysis. The success of this study is attributed to the carefully design of both the questions of the interview and the sample that comprises the diverse general aviation sector. The newly found contributory factorsare associated with a pilot’s performance as well as airspace design …

Synthetic Vision System Commercial Aircraft Flight Deck Display Technologies For Unusual Attitude Recovery, Lawrence (Lance) J. Prinzel Iii, Kyle E. Ellis, Jarvis (Trey) J. Arthur, Stephanie N. Nicholas, Captain Daniel Kiggins
International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2017
A Commercial Aviation Safety Team (CAST) study of 18 worldwide loss-of-control accidents and incidents determined that the lack of external visual references was associated with aflight crew’s loss of attitude awareness or energy state awareness in 17 of these events. Therefore, CAST recommended development and implementation of virtual day-Visual Meteorological Condition (VMC)display systems, such as synthetic vision systems, whichcan promoteflight crew attitude awareness similar to a day-VMC environment. This paper describes the results of a high-fidelity, large transport aircraft simulation experimentthatevaluatedvirtual day-VMC displays and a “background attitude indicator” concept as an aid to pilots in recovery from unusual attitudes. International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2017
The FAA is developing a standard set of colors for use inair traffic control (ATC) displays. The set will be defined in terms ofCIE Yu'v'values, corresponding sRGB values, and color names. A significant complication is that the ATC controller population includes people who havecolor-vision deficiencies (CVDs). We have written a softwaretool to assist the FAA inselecting and testing a suitable set of colors. It accepts a set of Yu'v'values as input and: (1) Draws graphics and calculates color-related figures of merit to predict whether the set will be acceptable for color-normal and CVD …

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2017
In order for pilots to carry passengers from one destination to another they must rely on their indicators and controls to take them there safely. This also includes their ability to use autopilot technology to help facilitate ease of travel and safety for not only pilots but passengers, as well. Autopilot technology is always advancing and now we are seeing that technology being incorporated into commercial aviation and UAS’s doing tasks such as transporting goods to people’s homes to performing military operations Despite this advancement in technology, passengers may feel nervous about pilots relying on autopilot technology for flight instead …

Intelligent Systems Applied To Workload Monitoring And Task Allocation, Scott Grigsby, Jacob Crossman, Rich Frederikson, Ben Purman, Dylan Schmorrow
International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2017
We have implemented an integrated system, called Computational Situation Awareness (CSA), into a prototype control station to coordinate dynamic task sharing and allow UxV operators to be quickly brought up to speed with sufficient situation awareness to effectively understand and handle new tasking. Within CSAwe have implemented a real-time workload model for estimating workload across a user’s visual, tactile, and cognitive resources. This workload estimate enables the system to recognize when tasks should be handed off and to whom they should be handed. By tracking user tasks, user workload, and system state, the system builds an understanding of the team’s …

Thissymposium provides an overview of a researcheffort that integrated several autonomy advancements into a control station prototype to flexibly teama single human operator with heterogeneous unmanned vehicles. The autonomy related technologies optimize asset allocation, plan vehicle routes, recommend courses of actionand provide a distributed support architecturefeaturing an extensible software framework. This effort also integrated these technologies with novel human-autonomy interfaces that allow operators to effectively manage UxV viahigh level “play” commands. Evaluation results indicatethat the innovative approach supports operator-autonomy teaming for effective management of a dozen simulated vehicles performing base defense tasks.

Attrition In U.S. Air Traffic Control Specialist (Atcs) Training: A Review Of 50 Years Of Data, Dana Broach
International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2017
Aptitude testing and “screening” at the FAA Academy have been viewed as keys to reducing field ATCS training attrition. To what extent have ATCS field training attrition rates changed over time with testing and screening? Historical data on training outcomes were extracted from FAA reports and other documented sources for controllers hired in five non-overlapping cohorts spanning 50 years. Academy Attrition Rateaveraged 26% (SD=18%) over the 50 yearsand across options, compared to 25% (SD=4%)in field training. LowerField Training Attrition Ratescoincided with no screening (22%, 1968– 1970) and intensive screening (19%, 1986–1992). Elimination of screening did not result …

Although there are guidelines for transcultural adaptation and validation of psychometric tools, similar resources do not exist for translation of diagnostic and symptom terminology used by health professionals to communicate with one another, their patients, and the public. The issue of translation is particularly salient when working with underserved, non-English speaking populations in high-income countries and low- and middle-income countries. As clinicians, researchers, and educators working in cross-cultural settings, we present four recommendations to avoid common pitfalls in these settings. We demonstrate the need for: (1) harmonization of terminology among clinicians, educators of health professionals, and health policymakers; (2) distinction …

Childhood Abuse, Dissociation, And Callous-Unemotional Traits, Malika Bains
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
The purpose of the present study was to examine the associations between childhood maltreatment (physical, sexual, psychological, neglect and exposure to family violence), dissociation, and callous-unemotional traits. Past literature has recognized that a significant subset of children are developing with an extensive history of abuse in an environment that is devoid of nurturing (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Children's Bureau, 2016). Unfortunately, children developing in maladaptive environments often develop unhealthy coping mechanisms that impact their personality later in life (Ford, Chapman, Mack & Pearson, 2006; Messman-Moore & Coates, 2007). One example of this phenomenon is the development of …

Dealing With Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis-Associated Condom Migration: Changing The Paradigm For Men Who Have Sex With Men, Richard A. Crosby
Dealing With Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis-Associated Condom Migration: Changing The Paradigm For Men Who Have Sex With Men, Richard A. Crosby
Health, Behavior & Society Faculty Publications
The behavioural aspects of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) are challenging, particularly the issue of condom migration. Three vital questions are: (1) at the population-level, will condom migration lead to increases in non-viral sexually transmissible infections?; (2) how can clinic-based counselling best promote the dual use of condoms and PrEP?; and (3) in future PrEP trials, what are the ‘best practices’ that should be used to avoid type 1 and type 2 errors that arise without accounting for condom use behaviours? This communication piece addresses each question and suggests the risk of a ‘PrEP only’ focus to widening health disparities.

This qualitative study explored social-cultural factors that shape treatment seeking behaviors among depressed rural, low-income women in Appalachia—a region with high rates of depression and a shortage of mental health services. Recent research shows that increasingly rural women are receiving some form of treatment and identifying their symptoms as depression. Using purposive sampling, investigators recruited 28 depressed low-income women living in Appalachian Kentucky and conducted semistructured interviews on participants’ perceptions of depression and treatment seeking. Even in this sample of women with diverse treatment behaviors (half reported current treatment), participants expressed ambivalence about treatment and its potential to promote recovery. …

Consumers, Clergy, And Clinicians In Collaboration: Ongoing Implementation And Evaluation Of A Mental Wellness Program, Glen Milstein, Dennis Middel, Adriana Espinosa
Publications and Research
As a foundation of most cultures, with roots in persons’ early development, religion can be a source of hope as well as denigration. Some religious institutions have made attempts to help persons with mental health problems, and some mental health professionals have sought to engage religion resources. These programs have rarely been sustained. In 2008, the Mental Health Center of Denver (MHCD) developed a program to assess the utility of religion resources within mental health care. In response to positive feedback, MHCD appointed a director of Faith and Spiritual Wellness who facilitates community outreach to faith communities and spiritual integration …

A Systems Approach To Predicting And Measuring Workload In Rail Traffic Management Systems, Joanna Evans
H-Workload 2017: Models and Applications (Works in Progress)
The introduction of systems such as Traffic Management (TM) will result in a number of changes in how the railway is managed for operations and maintenance staff such as, an increase in collaborative working styles and shared responsibilities. In order to react to these changing operational demands and user needs, TM workstation designs need to have greater flexibility and be configurable to support the information requirements for each specific role as well as support each role during different scenarios. Although this flexibility in system design has the potential to enhance performance, it increases the complexity of measuring operator workload. The …

Non-Suicidal Self-Injury Characteristics And How Social Support Plays A Role, Stephanie Smith-Kellen
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
NSSI affects many young adults and is associated with suicidal ideation, as well as numerous mental health disorders and other psychological variables. There were a total of 59 participants that participated in this study from an undergraduate college sample who endorsed self-injuring. An online platform for research was used to recruit participants and provide them with the online survey link. Self-injuring more than one bodily location may result in feeling more stigma than individuals who self-injure one bodily location. Self-stigma and self-injuring multiple bodily locations both significantly predicted suicidal ideation, but gender and social support did not predict suicidal ideation. …

Understanding the relation betweenmotivation and pilot impulsive decision-making is extremely important in the context of aviation human factors. One way to operationalize motivation is by presentingparticipantswith different reinforces, either primary (e.g. food rewards) or secondary (e.g. financial incentives, arguably playinga crucial role in in-flight decision-making).To establish the role that different reward systems play in decision-making, we tested the extent to which distinct brain regions aresensitive to the reinforcement content. Combininganeuro-economics approach with a voxel-based lesion method, we foundthat distinct regions within orbito-frontal cortex (OFC) are differentially involved in impulsivitydecisionsbased on the reinforcement type. In contrast, lesions in dorsolateral prefrontalcortex (DLPFC) were not …

Gaze-data could befeasible to assessinteractions within smallgroups, and provide added value for the assessment of ‘team cognition’(c.f., Cooke et al., 2013). In thesynthetic Control Center Task Environment (ConCenT) 18 teamsof three arecollectively monitoringan array of displays and predictingmalfunctions, indicated by a setpoint kickbacks. To locate potential malfunctions they have tocollaboratively determine system dynamicspatterns. Within-team expectations are measuredby gaze parameters related to situational relevantareas of interest (AoI). Within-team standard errors (SE) in fixation frequencies areutilized for post-hoc classifications of teams according to gaze-behavior homogenity. The amount of attentional resources teams allocated to relevant AoIsincreasesduring critical phases, with a change ofemphasis between the …
