Ways To Mental Health: West And East, George F. Melody Jan 1959

Ways To Mental Health: West And East, George F. Melody

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

What is the psychosocial condition of Western man? What has happened to Apollonian man, characterized by order, harmony and leisure? Why has the ideal or Apollonian man (so well described by Nietzsche and Spengler) given way to Dionysian man ... Faustian man? Whence has gone the Apollonian safeguard, essential to measure, constraint, health and love?

How really sick is Western man? Why is he not at peace with himself, his family, his associates, people in other countries who may have political philosophies different from his own ... nay, with God? An inventory of the concrete condition of Western man may …

Subliminal Stimulus Recall In Persons Who Are And Are Not Aware Of The Stimulus, Delayne Hudspeth Jun 1958

Subliminal Stimulus Recall In Persons Who Are And Are Not Aware Of The Stimulus, Delayne Hudspeth

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

In this study an effort was made to determine, in part, if the fears of persons who have been decrying the use of subliminal stimulation in advertising were realistic. Accepting the work of other scholars that this phase of perception does exist, this writer attempted to explore one facet of the problem with this hypothesis: persons who receive subliminal stimuli will be more apt to consciously recall the stimuli if they are aware that the stimuli are being given.

Research on this phase of subliminal perception was done with visual stimuli on students in beginning psychology courses. Given a pre-test …

A Manual For Objective Tat Scoring, Richard H. Dana Jan 1956

A Manual For Objective Tat Scoring, Richard H. Dana

Regional Research Institute for Human Services

This manual presents a concise but abbreviated statement of one objective TAT scoring system and its predictive efficiency. It is designed to facilitate application of this approach to TAT scoring. Although the rationale upon which this method is predicated derives from certain specific assumptions regarding personality, the clinical use of these categories does not demand any particular theoretical persuasion. The author recognizes two kinds of validity germane to projective instruments: (a) validity, prediction of clinical diagnosis; (b) validity, prediction of personality characteristics. This manual deals only with validity.

Types Of Behavior During Labor And Delivery And Scores On The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, Bette Gloria Winthers

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Purpose of the Study

The thesis of this study is that personality characteristics can be shown as factors in the variation of behavior which occurs during labor and childbirth. It is felt that if personality traits can be measured by a standard device they will correlate with various types of behavior expressed during labor. The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory is one instrument which tests all of the more important phases of personality. This test was chosen as the device to be used in this study to determine the personality traits of the women involved. Therefore, the purpose of this study …

Interest Patterns For Four Occupations: Kuder Preference Record, Barbara Swensen Baer May 1953

Interest Patterns For Four Occupations: Kuder Preference Record, Barbara Swensen Baer

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The problems of personnel placement and vocational choice at some time concern nearly everyone, as the employer or as the employee. Many people drift into their occupations, others shift from one wrong choice to another, while a large number are defeated by the struggle for success in an occupation for which they are not fitted. The mere placement of a worker on a job does not guarantee job success or interest in that job. In many cases no consideration is made of interests, general abilities, or special aptitudes, and even with a perfect diagnosis of these factors vocational choice still …

The Relationship Between Altitude – I.Q. Discrepancy And Anxiety, Claire Kepler Purcell, John Drevdahl, Kenneth Purcell Jan 1952

The Relationship Between Altitude – I.Q. Discrepancy And Anxiety, Claire Kepler Purcell, John Drevdahl, Kenneth Purcell

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Recently there has been increasing interest in the use of intra-individual test discrepancies as a measure of functioning efficiency. One of the major problems in establishing scatter patterns has been that of finding a suitable internal reference point. The three reference points most commonly employed are the mean or IQ, the vocabulary score, and the altitude or maximum score. Psychologists who believe that the G factor is an ability argue for the use of the IQ as a reference point while those who believe that it is a capacity use altitude as a reference point. In regarding intelligence as a …

The Rorschach Test With Children From Two To Six Years Old, Richard H. Dana Jan 1950

The Rorschach Test With Children From Two To Six Years Old, Richard H. Dana

Regional Research Institute for Human Services

The development of the ink-blot as a psychological tool has taken a thousand years. The Rorschach, a formal clinical representative of this heritage, is a product of this "testing age" and has been extensively used with children. This has necessitated certain modifications of procedure and analysis which have been achieved by more or less intuitive, non-systematic methods. The most pertinent questions concerning the Rorschach test with adults also apply to children. These questions include the merry-go-round of scoring possibilities: "Clinical", intuitive; objective and in terms of formal categories; psychometric, utilizing a vast number of rating scales.

Medical Arts and Sciences: A Scientific Journal of the College of Medical Evangelists

A concept of the causation of allergic disease herewith is presented in which, in addition to the allergic factors, emotional states and psychic stimuli are introduced as integral parts of every case. The adoption of the terms "intrinsic" for the neuropsychiatric factors and "extrinsic" for the organic factors in the production of allergic disease is suggested.
