Efficacy Of Zuranolone In The Treatment Of Postpartum Depression: An Evidence-Based Review, Shana-Kay Lambert-Johnson, Tasaduq Mir
North Texas GME Research Forum 2026
BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a common and potentially severe condition frequently managed in primary care, where delayed treatment adversely affects maternal and infant outcomes. Neuroactive steroid therapies targeting γ-aminobutyric acid type A receptors represent a novel therapeutic class. Brexanolone, the first FDA-approved treatment for PPD, required prolonged inpatient administration and was withdrawn from the U.S. market in 2025. Zuranolone is currently the only FDA-approved medication specifically indicated for PPD, offering a short-course oral treatment suitable for outpatient use. This review evaluated the efficacy of zuranolone and its applicability in primary care practice.
METHODS: This evidence-based review was conducted in …

Wilson’S Disease Psychosis In A Young Man With Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Case Report And Focus On Management, Landon C. Sowell, Barbara L. Gracious
HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine
Introduction
Wilson's disease is a rare autosomal recessive disorder, affecting approximately 1 in 30 000 individuals and is characterized by abnormal copper accumulation in the body, primarily affecting the liver and brain. Psychiatric manifestations as a first presentation, particularly psychosis, are less commonly recognized resulting in failure to begin treatment early in the course of the disease. This case report highlights a patient that presented to the hospital with psychosis, who was later diagnosed with Wilson’s disease. This case underscores the importance of considering organic causes in first-episode psychosis.

Introduction
Spontaneous pneumomediastinum (SPM) is a rare condition defined by the presence of air in the mediastinum in patients without an observable traumatic cause. Pneumomediastinum is a somewhat rare condition that occurs 1 in every 25 000 individuals, aged 5 to 34 years old, with 76% occurring in men. Pneumomediastinum can further be divided into 2 categories: SPM and traumatic pneumomediastinum. Traumatic pneumomediastinum is most commonly seen with blunt force trauma or any iatrogenic procedures to the chest wall. Spontaneous pneumomediastinum frequently occurs due to air leaking through small alveolar sacs, which rupture within the surrounding bronchovascular sheath. Spontaneous pneumomediastinum …

Introduction: Psychodermatology is an interdisciplinary branch of psychosomatic medicine that addresses interactions between the psyche and skin. Stress is often a key exacerbating factor and highlights the bidirectional relationship between psychological factors and skin disorders. Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic skin condition affecting pediatric and adult populations with an estimated global prevalence of approximately 2.6%, or approximately 204 million people. AD classically presents with a red, scaly, pruritic rash. Here, we present a case of biopsy-proven AD induced by stress-associated behaviors related to patient-identified obsessive-compulsive habits. Case Presentation: A 61-year-old female presented for persistent itching and white discoloration in …

North Texas Research Forum 2025
Background: Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) involves a preoccupation with a nonexistent or insignificant physical defect that causes clinically significant distress and impacts a patient's daily functioning. We present a case of a patient with body dysmorphia that manifested as anxiety about hair loss. Case Information: A 48-year-old otherwise healthy female presented to the dermatology clinic with the chief complaint of 8 months of hair loss. She had been seen previously by 2 other dermatologists. She brought 28 pages of paperwork to her first appointment detailing previous work-up, including four separate skin punch biopsies consistent with androgenetic, non-cicatricial (non-scarring) alopecia. Other …

Cocaine Induced Agranulocytosis And Neutropenia, Maria Gomez Alvarez, Ashish Govan, Raymond Larocque
East Florida Division GME Research Day 2025
Introduction: Cocaine use in the United states is seen in many cases within the hospital system. Typically, they present with tachycardia, hypertension, sweating, even heart attack. Due to the uncontrolled sale and distribution of drugs, patients can be exposed to other additives in drugs which can lead to unexpected complications. Cocaine laced with levamisole (an antiparasitic drug used in veterinary medicine) can lead to agranulocytosis and neutropenia. Cocaine being the second most used illegal drug following marijuana it may be much more common than we think. Millions of individuals use cocaine yearly and develop a heavy addiction with use of …

Emerging Role Of Liafensine In The Treatment Of Treatment Resistant Depression: Insights From The Enlighten Trial, Karla Narvaez, Saad Masud, Richard Callahan
East Florida Division GME Research Day 2025
Background: Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) remains a significant unmet need, affecting about one third of patients with major depressive disorder who fail to respond to two or more antidepressant trials. There is a need for new pharmacological approaches. Liafensine (also known as DB104) is a first-in-class triple reuptake inhibitor targeting serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine transporters, whose development has recently incorporated a precision medicine approach. Mechanism of Action: Liafensine inhibits reuptake of all three major monoamines (serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine) distinguishing it from existing SSRIs, SNRIs, or other agents which typically target one or two systems. A genetic biomarker, ANK3 (also called …

A Case Of Xylazine-Induced Necrotic Skin Ulcerations In An Iv-Drug User In Florida, Mark Zaki, Cynthia Dillon, Anjali Patel, Barbara Gracious
HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine
Introduction
As illicit drug manufacturers find new ways to market their products and increase their profit margins, multiple contaminants have found their way into the illicit drug supply. The newest addition, xylazine, also known as “tranq,” has spread through the city of Philadelphia and has recently been gaining ground across the United States, including in the state of Florida.
Case Presentation
This case describes a 37-year-old male with a significant past psychiatric history of severe polysubstance intravenous (IV) use, including fentanyl and methamphetamine. He was comorbid with other mental and physical conditions and presented to the emergency department with acute …

Treatment Analysis Of Very Early And Early Onset Psychosis In The Youth Inpatient Setting, Acelyne Marie Summerson, Jordan Kalosieh, Sindhura Kompella, Clara Alvarez-Villaba, Yukthi Kodali
HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine
Background
The United States Food and Drug Administration approved 6 atypical antipsychotics for pediatric treatment of schizophrenia. However, little has been published on the effectiveness of these medications in the acute treatment setting of adolescents with psychosis. Since the clinical uncertainty and poor prognosis proceeding the early onset of schizophrenia has a significant impact on a child’s development, there is a critical need for evidence-based data on this population. The aim of our study was to investigate the effect of various antipsychotics on young patients admitted to the inpatient ward presenting with acute psychosis.
Methods
A retrospective analysis was performed …
