An apparatus and its method of use are provided allowing lavage, sump and enteral feeding operations with only one intubation. The apparatus includes a first tube having two distinct passageways. One of these passageways completely contains a second, feeding tube during intubation. Once the first tube is in place in the patient, the second tube is extended from the first tube so as to enter the stomach. FEMINIZING tumors of the adrenal cortex are associated with symptoms that presumably reflect the combined effects of estrogen excess and androgen deficiency — gynecomastia, diminished libido, attenuated potency, and testicular and prostatic atrophy.1 2 3 4 5 Although such tumors are extremely rare, they provide a unique opportunity to appraise the nature of endogenous estrogen action on the gonadal axis in men. In principle, the pathophysiologic effects of estrogen hypersecretion could be expressed at the level of either the Leydig cell or the hypothalamic–pituitary axis (or both), with consequent suppression of androgen production. Human Seminal Plasma was evaluated using a High Resolution Two-Dimensional Electrophoresis technique adapted by this laboratory. Seminal plasma from healthy volunteers with recently proven fertility were characterized using this technique to establish "normal" protein distribution patterns in the two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel slab. In addition, time studies were performed on selected specimens to determine the effects of liquefaction on seminal plasma protein composition within the first several hours after collection. Split ejaculates were collected for identification and elaboration of accessory organ components in the whole seminal plasma specimen. Diagnosis and treatment of hereditary angioneurotic oedema (HAO) is described in a family. C1 esterase inhibitor (C1 INH) deficiency was confirmed with radial immunodiffusion and functional assays. The effect of treament with combinations of tranexamic acid, danazol and stanozolol on C1 INH levels are reported.

This study was concerned with the problem of depression among elderly patients following surgery. The purpose of the study was to find out if older men following transurethral prostatectomy experienced a higher level of depression than normal elderly people in the general population. An attempt was made in the study to suggest factors in the patients' illness or environment which may have influenced the amount of depression they experienced.

Thirty patients, sixty-five years or older, were included in the study sample. Depression was measured by a self-rating depression scale (Zung) three weeks following their operations. Other facts about the patients …

For this reason, twenty-two patients undergoing cardiac surgery at Loma Linda University Hospital studied for the purpose of exploring the degree and time-course of were psychological stress.

Hospitalization and surgery have been recognized as being psychologically stressful for the majority of children. Hospital personnel have attempted to reduce some of the unnecessary psychological stress incurred by children by the use of many different methods. This study attempted to evaluate the use of preoperative play preparation sessions for minimizing this stress. The method was experimental with one variable. The subjects were forty-one children aged three and one-half to seven and one-half who had adeno-tonsillectomies. Twenty-one children comprising Group E were involved in a play session by the researchers. Twenty children were not prepared in this way. The tools …

A descriptive survey was conducted to compare the discomfort experienced on three selected postoperative days to determine if there is one day identified by the patient as the most uncomfortable and to assess the symptoms of which he might complain. A checklist of twelve symptoms common to postsurgical patients was administered on the evenings of the second, third and fourth postoperative days by the researcher. Findings indicated that nineteen or 56 per cent of the thirty-four patients interviewed stated that the second day was most uncomfortable, nine or 27 per cent the third and six or 17 per cent the …

The problem of this study was to review 100 open heart surgical cases in a selected hospital to determine the changes occurring in central venous pressure in relation to blood loss.

The review of literature revealed that central venous pressure is an important factor in determining immediate postoperative care of open heart surgical patients. If central venous pressure falls below the normal range of 5 to 10 centimeters of water, hemorrhage is suspected. If central venous pressure is elevated between 15 and 20 centimeters of water, cardiac tamponade is suspected.

Forty-six aorto-enteric fistuiae following abdominal aorta surgery are here recorded. A number of these have never before been recorded in the literature. For the first time sixteen cases of these aorto-enteric fistulae that were subjected to surgical intervention have been tabulated. Twelve of these had definitive surgery either immediately or eventually. The definitive procedures are also tabulated.

An attempt was made to produce a fistula in dogs. Of twelve dogs, one died six months postoperatively of massive rectal hemorrhage due to an aortoduodenal fistula that followed the implantation of a Teflon vessel graft into the abdominal aorta. The cause of …

In the past few years general hypothermia has been investigated as a means of reducing the oxygen requirements of the body sufficiently to allow exclusion of the heart from the circulation and thus permit intracardiac surgery under direct vision. There is also an important group of patients whose poor physical condition precludes radical surgery of any type. If the oxygen demands of the brain and other vital organs can be sufficiently reduced by hypothermia, it is conceivable that these patients would be able to withstand the shock of reduced circulation and even peripheral vascular embarrassment for short periods of time. …
