Background

In this pilot study, we examined psychological impacts of colorectal cancer (CRC), focusing on cancer-related posttraumatic stress disorder (CR-PTSD) symptoms, posttraumatic growth (PTG), and their relationship with coping strategies in surgically treated CRC patients.

Methods

This prospective pre- and postoperative pilot study assessed CRC patients at 2 time points, pre- and postoperative. Psychological symptoms were evaluated using the PTSD Checklist for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (PCL-5) and the PTG Inventory Short Form (PTGI-SF). Background

Evidence is limited on the fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) among colorectal cancer (CRC) survivors in the US, especially regarding patterns and trends of post-recovery coping mechanisms. This pilot mixed-methods study quantified FCR, examined its associations with Brief COPE domains, and contextualized coping through qualitative analysis.

Methods

Twenty-three patients who successfully underwent CRC surgery were included in this pilot study. Fear of cancer recurrence was measured using the FCR Inventory (FCRI) Short Form, and coping strategies were assessed with the Brief Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced (COPE) survey. Introduction Solid pseudopapillary epithelial neoplasm (SPEN) is a rare pancreatic tumor that typically presents in adult women and is usually asymptomatic. Case presentation A 12-year-old male presented to the emergency department with worsening abdominal pain one day after suffering mild abdominal trauma during a soccer match. Physical exam showed diffuse abdominal tenderness and guarding. CT abdomen with IV contrast showed a heterogeneous, round structure adjacent to the pancreatic tail with mass effect upon the spleen. MRI abdomen revealed a “claw sign” of pancreatic tissue surrounding the structure, suggesting a an underlying pancreatic mass with capsular rupture measuring 8.3 x 8.1 …

Background: In the United States, there are an estimated 20 million cases of cholelithiasis, though a majority remain asymptomatic. Development of choledocholithiasis is seen in 10%-20% of those with cholelithiasis. Typically, choledocholithiasis is managed via a two-stage approach starting with endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) followed by laparoscopic cholecystectomy on the same admission. More recent trends have seen a shift towards surgeon-directed management of the common bile duct through one-stage procedures that combine cholecystectomy with intraoperative common bile duct (CBD) exploration using choledochoscopy. INTRODUCTION: Giant colonic diverticulum (GCD), defined as a diverticulum >4 cm, is a rare manifestation of diverticular disease with less than 200 reported case reports. CT imaging is the preferred imaging modality to identify and confirm the presence of a GCD, which provides an accurate depiction of the size, location, and contents of the diverticulum GCD can present with nonspecific abdominal symptoms, abdominal pain, bloody stools, or an enlarging mass. Given the risk of serious complications, including diverticulitis, bowel obstruction, and perforation, early recognition and management are essential to prevent further complications. Background Trans-arterial embolization (TAE) of the gastroduodenal artery (GDA) is a well-established and effective treatment for peptic ulcer bleeding and visceral pseudoaneurysms. Although generally safe, delayed migration or erosion of embolization coils into the gastrointestinal lumen is a rare but recognized complication that may occur months to years after the procedure. Proposed mechanisms include ischemic mucosal injury, mechanical pressure from the coil mass, and chronic inflammation. Clinical manifestations vary widely, ranging from occult bleeding and ulceration to perforation or gastric-outlet obstruction. Only a limited number of cases describing GDA coil erosion presenting with both bleeding and obstruction have been reported. …

One potential method of alleviating these symptoms is traditional Chinese herbal medications (TCHM). This rapid review explores the role of traditional Chinese herbal medications in treating cancer-related symptoms in older adults.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is one of the most aggressive cancers characterized by highly invasive growth into the surrounding peripancreatic fat tissue, where tumor cells can directly interact with adipocytes. Due to poor response to the currently available (radio)chemotherapies, there is an urgent need for advanced therapy concepts. The present study shows that ADAMTS13 (a disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motifs 13), a key factor in blood coagulation, is significantly overexpressed in human PDAC. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed that ADAMTS13 expression is associated with prolonged survival and negatively correlated with vascular density. BACKGROUND/AIM: While surgery is a major component of treatment for managing rectal cancer, some individuals opt against it, potentially affecting their chances of survival. This study investigated the clinical and demographic elements linked to the decision to refuse surgery and assessed the potential impact of this decision on overall survival (OS). PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using the U.S. National Cancer Database to analyze factors linked to surgery refusal in patients with rectal cancer. Background: Failure to rescue (FTR), defined as death after major postoperative complications, is a critical quality indicator in pancreatic cancer surgery. Despite advances in surgical techniques and perioperative care, FTR rates remain high and vary across institutions. Methods: This systematic review uses a narrative synthesis followed by PRISMA 2020. A PubMed search (1992-2025) identified 83 studies; after screening, 52 studies (2010-2025) were included. Eligible designs were registry-based, multicenter, single-center, or prospective audits. Given substantial heterogeneity in study designs, FTR definitions, and outcome measures, a narrative synthesis was performed; no formal risk-of-bias assessment or meta-analysis was conducted. It offers an in-depth analysis of liver function assessment tools and their prognostic roles in non-malignant liver diseases, with a focus on the albumin-bilirubin (ALBI) score. ALBI’s components, grading system, and clinical relevance across various liver conditions are reviewed and compared with traditional models such as the Child-Pugh and model for end-stage liver disease scores. Background: Epiploic appendagitis is a condition usually caused by infarction of the epiploic appendages, small outpouchings of adipose tissue found on the serosal surface of the colon. Epiploic appendagitis is a rare cause of acute lower abdominal pain, but the condition does not have any specific presenting clinical features and is often misdiagnosed as acute diverticulitis, appendicitis, or other gastrointestinal disorder. Case Report: A 53-year-old female presented with abnormal uterine bleeding and pelvic pain and was seeking definitive surgical management. Aortoduodenal syndrome results from expansion of an abdominal aortic aneurysm, leading to symptoms of upper gastrointestinal obstruction. Endovascular aneurysm repair of large or symptomatic aortic aneurysms has become an important treatment modality for patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm. However, a large proportion of these grafts are complicated by endoleaks that can lead to a spectrum of significant symptoms. We present a case of rapidly worsening gastrointestinal obstructive symptoms in a patient with an already repaired aortic stent graft and a solitary kidney, found to be due to a type III endoleak that improved after emergent repeat endovascular aneurysm repair.
