BACKGROUND:

Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a dangerous and life-threatening medical condition which significantly increases risk of cardiovascular fatality. Although each PE treatment strategy has shown to be effective to some degree, there is limited data on they compare. The objective of this study is to evaluate the outcomes of PE treatment with anticoagulation versus interventional treatments.

METHODS:

A Retrospective chart review was performed of all patients identified as having a PE at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital from January 1, 2021 to December 31, 2022. Using Redcap, patient information was recorded, including age, sex, race, body mass index, and pertinent history. …

Background: Wide awake hand surgery has allowed many hand procedures to be moved out of the operating room and into minor procedure rooms while increasing efficiency, maintaining safety, and reducing both patient and hospital costs. The goal of this study was to evaluate patient satisfaction and postoperative complications of wide-awake local anesthesia with no tourniquet procedures performed in a community-based hospital procedure room.

Extracorporeal life support has advanced from its humble beginnings over 3 decades ago, with the first description of its success in a patient with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), going as far back as 1971. The indications for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) therapy include refractory respiratory and/or cardiac failure, and ECMO is now being increasingly used in adult patients. MPNSTs are rare malignancies that are classically associated with pre-existing plexiform neurofibromas in neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1) patients, but also occur in association with radiation as well as sporadically in patients with no known risk factors. The typical presentation of sporadic MPNST is a new painless enlarging mass. The typical presentation of MPNST in an NF-1 patient is rapid enlargement or new onset of pain associated with a pre-existing plexiform neurofibroma. Background: Pancreatic cancer (PC) is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the United States. Reported risk factors for PC include: advancing age, a family history of PC, high-risk inherited syndromes, cigarette smoking, exposure to occupational and environmental carcinogens, African-American race, high fat/high cholesterol diet, obesity, chronic pancreatitis, and diabetes mellitus.
