This Thesis is the result of several months of work done in the Physiology Laboratory in the Marquette University School of Medicine. The experiments performed will enable one to become familiar with the general principles involved in the recording of reactions of muscle and nerve tissue by Kymographic methods. Especial attention is directed to the results of these experiments.

Treatment of varicose veins by the injection method has resulted in diminution of prolonged suffering by many patients. The ideal solution is one that ill cause no sloughing of the tissues immediately surrounding the vein; nontoxic in the amounts used; effective; not too painful and not capable of reducing drug hypersensitivity. Many
drugs have been tried with varying efficacy. Among the more important are, dextrose and sodium chloride mixture, quinine, quine urea hydrochloride, quinine dihydrochloride, quinine and urethane, 30 to 40% sodium salicylate, 20% sodium chloride, and sodium morrhuate. This is not a new disease by any means, so far as the United States are concerned, nevertheless I have been unable to find any description of it in the literature at my command. While new to myself until the past Summer, there have been quite a number of reports of its existence, and complaints about it, from farmers and breeders of cattle in some of the live-stock journals of our western States.
