Animal venom, known for its complex biochemical composition, presents a valuable source of therapeutic molecules, particularly for antiviral applications. Despite this potential, the industrial use of venom remains limited, with fewer than a dozen venom-derived compounds reaching commercial markets. This study underscores the significance of exploring venom’s natural diversity as a reservoir for novel bioactive compounds that could drive innovative drug development. A woman in her fourth decade of life with metastatic ectopic Cushing syndrome due to a thymic neuroendocrine tumor developed an acute adrenocorticotropin (ACTH)-mediated hypercortisolemic crisis 5 days after initiating lutetium-177-labeled DOTA-[Tyr3]-octreotate (177Lu-DOTATATE) peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT). BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Artificial intelligence (AI), capable of analyzing vast volume of data rapidly, presents a promising solution to optimize literature screening for systematic reviews (SRs). Using the INSIDE (artificial INtelligence to Support Informed DEcision making) platform, we compared the performance of AI against the "gold standard" traditional SR method in the context of prostate cancer (PC) to assess whether AI could potentially improve efficiency and quality of screening.

The estimation of treatment response heterogeneity (TRH) is increasingly important as medicine moves toward personalized approaches. While various statistical methods have been proposed to quantify TRH in parallel-group trials, the standard deviation of individual responses (SDIR) has gained prominence within physiological research. This method is intended to quantify individual response variation by comparing standard deviations of change scores between intervention and control groups. We acknowledge that SDIR represents an improvement over many other flawed approaches that often involve responder counting. Acromion and scapular spine fractures (ASFs) pose significant challenges in the management of patients undergoing reverse total shoulder arthroplasty and there is a pressing need for effective preventive measures. Polymyositis (PM) has been in the diagnostic armamentarium in medicine since the mid-nineteenth century. Medicine training puts a heavy emphasis on this diagnosis, and anyone with proximal muscle weakness with elevated serum creatinine kinase is assumed to be PM and a number of patients were rendered this diagnosis without additional testing. This article addresses the historical aspects of the diagnosis of PM and its evolution. We review this literature that addresses the rarity of this diagnosis and rightly puts in perspective in terms of its occurrence in relation to other inflammatory myositides.

The ability to manipulate neurons that express corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) or its receptors has led to many new discoveries about how CRF signaling modulates stress-related behaviors in mice. However, similar advances in rats have been limited by the lack of reporter lines targeting CRF receptors, restricting access to behavioral paradigms that are more suitable for, or specific to, rats. Here, we provide an extensive neuroanatomical characterization of a recently generated CRFR1-Cre rat. Acute kidney injury (AKI) is prevalent among hospitalized patients. Novel biomarkers are needed to diagnose AKI and target therapies. Endotrophin (ETP) is a molecule released during collagen type VI formation that may promote injury and fibrosis. Although serum ETP elevation has been associated with adverse outcomes in AKI, urinary ETP has not been assessed in AKI, nor has ETP been evaluated in a pediatric population. Despite common coadministration in nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF), there is minimal evidence regarding the impact of concomitant amiodarone use on apixaban pharmacokinetics (PK). We described the population PK of apixaban (2.5 and 5mg twice daily) in 106 hospitalized patients with and without concomitant amiodarone administration at steady state. Apixaban PK was reasonably described by a one-compartment model with first-order absorption and linear elimination. Aside from the receipt of amiodarone, age was retained as a statistically significant covariate on apparent clearance. Metabolic plasticity allows cancer cells to survive under adverse conditions. To investigate the role of mitochondrial chaperone tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated protein 1 (TRAP1) in this process, we used CRISPR/Cas9 mediated genetic deletion to knock out (KO) TRAP1 in colon cancer cells. Depletion of TRAP1 triggered a series of events: induced metabolic reprogramming, increased glycolytic flux, downregulation of mitochondrial complex I, and elevated ROS generation. TRAP1-deficient cells showed tolerance to Oxidative Phosphorylation (OXPHOS) inhibitors and exhibited a higher extracellular acidification rate (ECAR). Additionally, TRAP1 depletion activated hypoxia response elements (HREs) and upregulated HIF1A target genes such as GLUT1 and MCT1. …

Background: Mechanical thrombectomy is a critical intervention for patients with acute ischemic stroke with large vessel occlusion. However, significant barriers remain in its widespread implementation, particularly in low- to middle-income countries, including a shortage of trained physicians and limited access to advanced medical technologies. Background: Emerging evidence from observational studies, meta-analyses, and clinical trials has reshaped the treatment landscape of chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH). This guideline provides updated recommendations on diagnosis, patient selection, and medical, surgical, and endovascular management.

Methods: The Society of Vascular and Interventional Neurology Guidelines and Practice Standards committee formed a writing group of interdisciplinary experts to review current literature. Teduglutide is a glucagon-like peptide 2 (GLP-2) analogue that was approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of pediatric (>1 year) intestinal failure due to short bowel syndrome in 2019. GLP-2 analogues promote rapid intestinal adaptation, increasing the absorptive capacity of residual intestine after surgical resection to aid the achievement of enteral autonomy or reduce parenteral nutrition requirements. Objective: TikTok has experienced exponential growth as a social media platform, with over 1 billion active users. Concurrently, retrograde cricopharyngeal dysfunction (RCPD) has seen a surge in awareness among patients and on social media. Our objective was to characterize the most popular RCPD-related content on TikTok.

Methods: The top 50 videos associated with the following hashtags were analyzed: "RCPD," "noburp," "retrograde cricopharyngeal dysfunction," and "noburpsyndrome." Recorded metrics included views, likes, and comments, along with information regarding the creator's identity, gender, geographical location, and the video's purpose.

Background: Beta-propeller Protein-Associated Neurodegeneration (BPAN) is a rare neurodevelopmental degenerative disorder caused by pathogenic variants in WDR45 leading to brain iron accumulation. Its rarity and complex clinical course make it difficult to select appropriate clinical outcome assessments (COAs). This study investigated the relationship between autistic burnout and posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) in trauma-exposed autistic adults without intellectual disability (n = 91). Cross-sectional relationships between autistic burnout (measured by the ABSI), PTSS (PCL-5), depression (PHQ-9), and anxiety (GAD-7) were assessed using Pearson correlations. To examine the distinctiveness of autistic burnout from posttraumatic stress, an exploratory factor analysis was conducted on ABSI and PCL-5 data. A strong correlation was found between autistic burnout and PTSS (r = .70, p < .001), an exploratory factor analysis suggested shared underlying factors. Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is among the most common complications affecting patients with severe injuries. Although enoxaparin resistance is common, predicting which patients among this subgroup will develop VTE remains a clinical challenge. The goal of this study was to use multiomics to identify plasma constituents associated with VTE development among trauma patients exhibiting poor responses to enoxaparin. As survival rates of extremely preterm (EPT) infants continue to improve, focus has shifted to reduce morbidity and complications in these vulnerable patients. Management of EPT infants presents significant clinical, logistical, and sometimes ethical challenges. Outcomes across centers are highly variable and strongly influenced by the care provided in the early neonatal period. Standardized guidelines, based on published literature and center-specific experiences, play an important role in improving outcomes for EPT infants. Multidisciplinary guidelines provide a framework for clinical management and support a consistent care approach. We aimed to clarify the prognostic value of SPDEF, explore demographic and molecular correlates of its expression, and investigate potential regulatory mechanisms underlying its dysregulation. Several urinary markers reflect disease severity and have the potential to support the management of heart failure (HF). Collecting urine samples is easy and inexpensive, and urine sample composition can be altered not only by underlying kidney impairments (i.e. filtration barrier damage and tubular injury) but also via neurohormonal and inflammatory activation, ageing, comorbidities, other medical conditions and pharmacological interventions.
