Collagen II is a vital structural component in developing bones and mature cartilage. Muta- tions in this protein cause spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia, a disease characterized primarily by altered skeletal growth and manifesting with a range of phenotypes, from lethal to mild. This study examined transgenic mice harboring the R992C (p.R1124C) substitution in colla- gen II. AIMS: This study compared the six-month medical/pharmacy costs and healthcare resource utilization (HCRU) for knee OA patients undergoing intra-articular therapy with different classes of hyaluronic acid (HA) (by molecular weight) or corticosteroid (ICS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients across high molecular weight (HMW) HA, medium molecular weight (MMW) HA, low molecular weight (LMW) HA, and ICS therapy groups were matched from a U.S. claims database (Optum's de-identified Clinformatics Data Mart Database), with a final size of 6,234 patients per group. OBJECTIVES: Psoriasis (PsO) is a systemic autoimmune disease primarily characterized by erythematous plaques on the skin. While extra-dermal manifestations like psoriatic arthritis (PsA) are well recognized, data linking PsO to interstitial lung disease (ILD) remain limited. This study aimed to evaluate whether patients with PsA have a higher risk of developing ILD compared with patients with PsO.

This study evaluates the use of the Shilla Growth Guidance System (SGGS) with a pelvic foundation for treating severe neuromuscular scoliosis in young children. The primary outcomes include revision surgery and complication rates. In a 21-patient cohort (mean age 5.3 years, follow-up 10 years), 57% required only one surgery, while 43% needed revisions. The complication rate was 38%, with a 29% deep infection rate. The procedure improved spinal alignment and growth but carried significant risks. SGGS with pelvic fixation may reduce the need for repeated surgeries in this complex patient population.

On August 14, 2024, the Centers for Disease Control issued a Health Alert Network (HAN) health advisory due to a surge in Parvovirus B19 (B19V) infections in the United States. Our report presents two cases of suspected donor-derived Parvovirus B19 infection in kidney transplant patients. Both cases had refractory anemia requiring treatment with intravenous immunoglobulin. These cases highlight the importance of awareness and monitoring of B19V infection in the context of recent epidemiologic trends to improve clinical outcomes in kidney transplant recipients.

Nowadays, checkpoint inhibitors play a major role in the management of different types of cancers. However, we have seen variants of immune therapy-related adverse events, which usually are variables from fatigue, to neuropathy to severe devastating complications such as respiratory failure due to myasthenia gravis (MG), as we saw in our case. Our patient was started on pembrolizumab, and they developed severe respiratory failure attributed to MG after three weeks from treatment initiation. Also, the patient presented with myositis, mild myocarditis and hepatitis, which were all related to pembrolizumab.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has emerged as a potential treatment for carpometacarpal (CMC) joint osteoarthritis, with studies suggesting it may offer more durable symptom relief compared to corticosteroids. A comprehensive review of four studies, including two randomized controlled trials (RCTs), a retrospective study, and a pilot study, revealed that both PRP and corticosteroid injections led to short-term improvements in pain and function. However, PRP demonstrated significantly better long-term outcomes, with VAS scores decreasing from 75 to 20 in the PRP group at 12 months, compared to a modest reduction from 70 to 65 in the corticosteroid group. Distal ulna fractures frequently accompany distal radius fractures but are often underappreciated in both clinical and research contexts. While conservative management is frequently employed, particularly following volar locking plate (VLP) fixation of the radius, certain indications, such as distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) instability, comminution, or high-energy trauma, may necessitate surgical fixation. This study evaluates patient-reported outcomes among patients with distal radius fractures treated operatively, comparing those with and without concomitant distal ulna fractures, and further stratifying based on the method of ulna fixation.

This case report describes a 25-year-old male who sustained a right-sided spiral humerus fracture during an arm-wrestling match. The diagnosis was confirmed through radiographic imaging, and the fracture was successfully managed with closed reduction and posterior long arm splinting. Fluoroscopy-guided steroid injections are standard for lumbar spine pain but involve radiation. Ultrasound offers a safer, radiation-free alternative. Ultrasound-guided injections are non-inferior in improving pain and function. A systematic review of PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, Scopus, and Web of Science was conducted. Studies in adults comparing ultrasound and fluoroscopy-guided injections reporting VAS, NRS, or ODI were included. Fifteen studies showed both techniques significantly improved pain and function, with no consistent superiority. Ultrasound-guided injections are effective and safe, providing comparable outcomes to fluoroscopy while eliminating radiation exposure.

Exposure to microgravity causes rapid bone loss and muscle atrophy, posing serious challenges for long-duration spaceflight. In response, NASA developed countermeasures such as Lower Body Negative Pressure (LBNP) to simulate gravitational loading on astronauts’ lower extremities. LBNP, often combined with exercise, has proven effective in mitigating musculoskeletal degradation during bed rest analogs. PURPOSE: To compare the 2-year postoperative outcomes of hamstring tendon (HT) grafts to quadriceps tendon (QT) grafts in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. We hypothesised no significant differences between the two methods.

METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted following the 2020 PRISMA guidelines. Five online databases (Cochrane, Embase, PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science) were screened for prospective randomised controlled trials (RCT). Aims: Cancer care guidelines have been developed in many subspecialities, usually in advanced health systems. However, there are notable global disparities in healthcare access, which can impact sarcoma care. Unfortunately, there is a lack of global data on this subject. Our aim was to describe access to sarcoma care based on a comprehensive global survey among orthopaedic oncologists, and assess for global as well as regional differences.

Introduction/Purpose:

Transthyretin amyloidosis occurs in two forms, hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis (hATTR), and wild-type ATTR (wtATTR)². Amyloidosis can result in restrictive cardiomyopathy presenting as heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF)⁴. A growing body of evidence demonstrates that amyloidosis may be underdiagnosed and can be caught earlier in the disease course⁵. The proteins causing amyloidosis can also deposit into various tissues including the carpal tunnel leading to carpal tunnel syndrome ².

Introduction: Osteoporosis and osteopenia affect roughly 10 million and 43 million older adults, respectively, in the United States. The primary way to detect osteoporosis and osteopenia is through a bone mineral density (BMD) scan, as is often done using dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). However, previous research shows DEXA to be unreliable when assessing BMD in individuals with lumbar scoliosis. Introduction: Rhabdomyolysis is the breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue that results in the release of intracellular contents such as myoglobin, CK, and electrolytes into the surrounding interstitium and circulation. Rhabdomyolysis is commonly precipitated by trauma, excessive physical exertion, infection, or drug toxicity. Compartment syndrome can be a complication of severe rhabdomyolysis, characterized by increased pressure in a closed anatomical space which can lead to compromised perfusion and ischemia. Background: The purpose of this study was to determine risk of shoulder injury in astronauts returning from space flight and highlight the need for further exploration of risk factors and preventative strategies.

Methods: Using The Lifetime Surveillance of Astronaut Health epidemiology database at National Aeronautics and Space Administration, a retrospective cohort study was conducted to assess the effect of space flight mission duration on rate of shoulder injury among astronauts. Regret in surgical practice is typically construed as resulting from the commission or the omission of a specific action at a specific decision point, which leads to a deleterious outcome. This article suggests a need to expand this conception of surgical regret to better account for surgeons' regret experiences arising from factors beyond their control. The commentary accompanying the case investigates these external sources of regret, such as resource limitations or professional interpersonal dynamics that prevent a desired outcome from being realized. BACKGROUND: This article examines predictors of subsequent total knee arthroplasty (TKA) within 6 months of nonoperative intervention based on (1) patient demographics; (2) knee osteoarthritis (OA) severity; and (3) various nonoperative treatments (cryoneurolysis with superficial or deep genicular nerve block, intra-articular [IA] hyaluronic acid injections, nonsteroidal inflammatory drug injections, IA-corticosteroids injections, or IA-triamcinolone extended-release [IA-TA-ER] injections). METHODS: Patients who had unilateral knee OA and received nonoperative intervention were identified in the Innovations in Genicular Outcomes Research registry between September 2021 and February 2024, identifying 505 patients.
