A Case Of Rhabdomyolysis Complicated By Acute Compartment Syndrome After A Ground-Level Fall, Barbara Malaga-Espinoza, Khairiya Haj-Yahya, Corey Haines

Research Symposium

Introduction: Rhabdomyolysis is the breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue that results in the release of intracellular contents such as myoglobin, CK, and electrolytes into the surrounding interstitium and circulation. Rhabdomyolysis is commonly precipitated by trauma, excessive physical exertion, infection, or drug toxicity. Compartment syndrome can be a complication of severe rhabdomyolysis, characterized by increased pressure in a closed anatomical space which can lead to compromised perfusion and ischemia. Timely identification and early surgical intervention are crucial to improving outcomes. Here we present a case of rhabdomyolysis complicated by acute compartment syndrome of the leg in the setting of prolonged poor …

Unveiling The Impact Of Phosphate On Skeletal Muscle Dysfunction In Chronic Kidney Disease, Hiram Garcia, Sowmya Duddu, Erik Hinojosa, Model Zerfu, Nathaniel L. Alvarez, Mohammad Razzaque, Alex Zuo Sep 2024

Unveiling The Impact Of Phosphate On Skeletal Muscle Dysfunction In Chronic Kidney Disease, Hiram Garcia, Sowmya Duddu, Erik Hinojosa, Model Zerfu, Nathaniel L. Alvarez, Mohammad Razzaque, Alex Zuo

Research Colloquium

Background: Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is characterized by progressive decline in renal function that ultimately culminates in the inability of the kidneys to effectively maintain homeostasis. The kidneys are a key regulator of phosphate, with other organs assisting in regulation including the skeletal system. In CKD, reduced kidney function leads to hyperphosphatemia. While its impact on the skeletal system is moderately studied, its effects on skeletal muscle are less reviewed. In our literature review, we aim to describe the effects of phosphate in the context of patients who have CKD while providing clinical context for this deserving population. We describe …

Periacetabular Osteotomy: An Analysis Of Social Media To Determine The Most Common Questions Asked By The Periacetabular Osteotomy Population, John M. Gaddis, Ryan Bialaszewski, Bretton Laboret, Joel Wells, Adina Stewart Sep 2024

Periacetabular Osteotomy: An Analysis Of Social Media To Determine The Most Common Questions Asked By The Periacetabular Osteotomy Population, John M. Gaddis, Ryan Bialaszewski, Bretton Laboret, Joel Wells, Adina Stewart

Research Colloquium

Background: Social media has become an increasingly popular resource for patients and a platform to share one’s experiences. Patients undergoing periacetabular osteotomy (PAO) may gravitate towards social media for support, guidance and understanding. The aim of this study was to investigate Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to further understand what the most common preoperative and postoperative questions patients undergoing PAO are asking.

Methods: Facebook, Instagram and Twitter were queried consecutively from February 1, 2023 to November 23, 2011. Facebook was searched for the two most populated interest groups; “Periacetabular Osteotomy (PAO)” and “Periacetabular Osteotomy Australia”. Instagram and Twitter were queried for …

Examining The Matrix: A Case Of Anti-Nuclear Matrix Protein 2 (Nxp-2) Positive Dermatomyositis, Victoria Cuello, Ramiro Oquita, Emilia Dulgheru Mar 2024

Examining The Matrix: A Case Of Anti-Nuclear Matrix Protein 2 (Nxp-2) Positive Dermatomyositis, Victoria Cuello, Ramiro Oquita, Emilia Dulgheru

Research Symposium

Background: Dermatomyositis is a disease characterized by proximal muscle weakness, elevated muscle enzymes and cutaneous skin findings including heliotrope rash, periungual erythema, Gottron’s papules/sign and shawl-sign. Myositis-specific autoantibodies (MSA) can be used to predict disease manifestations, response to therapy and prognosis. Specifically, patients with dermatomyositis with positive anti-nuclear matrix protein (NXP-2) typically present with classical skin findings, subcutaneous edema, profound muscle weakness, severe dysphagia and hypophonia.

Case Presentation: A 21-year-old Hispanic lady presented to the hospital for severe muscle weakness. She reported soreness in her thighs for three months prior to presentation followed by arm soreness. She also developed a …

Characterization Of Epithelial Growth Factor Transcripts Identified In Crotalus Atrox Venom, Ivan Lopez, Ying Jia Sep 2023

Characterization Of Epithelial Growth Factor Transcripts Identified In Crotalus Atrox Venom, Ivan Lopez, Ying Jia

Research Symposium

Epithelial Growth Factor (EGF) is the primary source in regeneration and stimulation of essential fibroblasts cells commonly found in epithelium. Studies have shown that snake venom components are becoming a growing factor in treating illnesses such as cancer, muscular dystrophy, chronic pain, blood pressure, blood clotting, etc. EGF in human cells contains a promising quaternary structure that can bind to snake venom metalloproteinases, proposing a means of activating biochemical responses through protein-protein interactions to regulate unwanted cellular functions. This supports promising research in achieving a greater understanding of regulation along cellular pathways through ligands, increasing the likelihood of targeting unwanted …

The Morbidity Of Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome Is Similar To That Of Pre-Tha Hip Osteoarthritis, Sonia Wadekar, Avneesh Chhabra, Emily Middleton, Yin Xi, Joel Wells Jan 2022

The Morbidity Of Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome Is Similar To That Of Pre-Tha Hip Osteoarthritis, Sonia Wadekar, Avneesh Chhabra, Emily Middleton, Yin Xi, Joel Wells

MEDI 9331 Scholarly Activities Clinical Years

Aims: We sought to characterize the morbidity upon presentation of GTPS and compared it to patients with end-stage, hip osteoarthritis (OA) awaiting total hip arthroplasty (THA). We hypothesize that patients with GTPS will have similar or worse morbidity than hip OA patients.

Methods: This retrospective case-control study examined patient reported outcomes measures (PROMs) on activity limitations, quality of life, pain, and level of disability, in 156 GTPS patients (193 hips) and 300 pre-THA hip OA patients (326 hips). All patients presented at a single academic medical center. Patients with secondary hip conditions or previous hip surgeries were excluded from the …
