Shilla Growth Guidance System (Sggs) Instrumentation With Pelvic Foundation (Sggs) For Severe Neuromuscular Spine Deformity. Does It Work?, Hannah Geoffroy, Richard Schwend May 2025

Shilla Growth Guidance System (Sggs) Instrumentation With Pelvic Foundation (Sggs) For Severe Neuromuscular Spine Deformity. Does It Work?, Hannah Geoffroy, Richard Schwend

Research Days

This study evaluates the use of the Shilla Growth Guidance System (SGGS) with a pelvic foundation for treating severe neuromuscular scoliosis in young children. The primary outcomes include revision surgery and complication rates. In a 21-patient cohort (mean age 5.3 years, follow-up 10 years), 57% required only one surgery, while 43% needed revisions. The complication rate was 38%, with a 29% deep infection rate. The procedure improved spinal alignment and growth but carried significant risks. SGGS with pelvic fixation may reduce the need for repeated surgeries in this complex patient population.

Comparing Bilateral And Unilateral Metal Stabilizers: Incision Complications In Pectus Repair, Seth Saylors, Shawn D. St Peter, Tolulope A. Oyetunji Md Mph, Nelimar Cruz-Centeno, Nitin Nadella May 2024

Comparing Bilateral And Unilateral Metal Stabilizers: Incision Complications In Pectus Repair, Seth Saylors, Shawn D. St Peter, Tolulope A. Oyetunji Md Mph, Nelimar Cruz-Centeno, Nitin Nadella

Research Days

Introduction: The use of metal stabilizers in minimally invasive pectus excavatum repair (MIPER) has been previously associated with multiple postoperative complications. We aimed to identify if bilateral metal stabilizers increase the risk of incision complications when compared to unilateral stabilizers.

Methods: Institutional Review Board approval was obtained. Patients that underwent MIPER with metal stabilizers from 2019 to 2022 and currently had the bar in place, at a single tertiary care pediatric center, were included. A telephone survey evaluated if they had incision-associated symptoms, and if the location was congruent with the stabilizer site. A retrospective chart review was performed to …

Variation In Laboratory & Radiographic Workup And Outcome In Children Hospitalized With Common Musculoskeletal Infections, Emily Bonanni May 2022

Variation In Laboratory & Radiographic Workup And Outcome In Children Hospitalized With Common Musculoskeletal Infections, Emily Bonanni

Research Days

Watch recording of live presentation.

Background: Common pediatric musculoskeletal infections (MSKIs) require prompt recognition & treatment to prevent significant morbidity and mortality. Variation in initial workup of these infections & associations with clinical outcomes is not well studied and could aid development of evidence-based guidelines to provide high-value care for all MSKIs.

Objectives/Goal: Examine variation in initial lab testing & imaging obtained in patients hospitalized for common MSKIs and explore association with clinical outcomes (length of stay (LOS), cost, 30-day readmission).

Methods/Design: We performed a retrospective, multicenter cohort study of hospitalized children aged 6 months to 18 years with a …

Use Of Artificial Intelligence To Identify Predictors Of Functional Outcomes In Patients With Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy, Natalie K. Katz May 2021

Use Of Artificial Intelligence To Identify Predictors Of Functional Outcomes In Patients With Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy, Natalie K. Katz

Research Days

Background: Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) is one of the most common forms of muscular dystrophy characterized by slowly progressive muscle weakness. Symptoms initially involve the facial and shoulder girdle muscles, with later involvement of the distal lower extremities, pelvic girdle and proximal lower extremities. FSHD type 1 (FHSD1) is the most common form (~95% of individuals) and is caused by deletion of microsatellite repeats in the D4Z4 region on chromosome 4 (4q35). Normal individuals have >10 repeats whereas individuals with FSHD1 have 1-10 repeats. There is significant variability in regards to disease severity, rates of progression and functional outcomes, but …
